Chapter 39 Three Candles
By eight, the cake was finished—chocolate with chocolate frosting, exactly what Leo had requested, with "Happy 3rd Birthday Leo!" written in careful letters.
Elena packed Leo up, thanked Mrs. Chen, and headed home.
Her phone buzzed as she was getting Leo into bed.
How'd the baking go?
Good. Cake is perfect. Leo ate half the sprinkles.
Sounds about right. You home safe?
Just putting Leo down now.
Kiss him goodnight for me?
Her chest tightened. I will.
After Leo was asleep, Elena sat on her couch, staring at her phone.
She should be excited about tomorrow. Leo's party, about celebrating her baby turning three.
Instead, she felt the weight of everything unsaid. Everything looming.
Alexander had called Leo his son today.
Had said he loved them both.
Spent weeks becoming part of their lives like he belonged there.
And tomorrow, he'd be at Leo's birthday party, celebrating with them like family.
It felt too good to be real.
But it was real.
And that scared her more than anything.
Thank you, she texted. For today. For everything.
You don't have to thank me.
I know. But I want to.
Get some sleep. Big day tomorrow.
You too.
Goodnight, Elena.
Goodnight, Alexander.
She set down her phone and headed to bed, trying not to think about how natural this had all become.
How right it felt.
How terrifying that was.
Tomorrow, Leo turned three.
Tomorrow, Alexander would be there, celebrating with them.
Tomorrow felt like a beginning.
She just hoped it wasn't the beginning of the end.
Saturday Morning - Leo's Birthday
Elena woke to small hands patting her face.
"Mama. Mama, wake up. It's my birthday!"
She cracked one eye open to find Leo's face inches from hers, grinning so wide his dimples carved deep into his cheeks.
"Happy birthday, baby."
"I'm FREE now!" He held up three fingers. "Not two anymore. FREE!"
"Three," she corrected, pulling him into a hug. "You're three."
"That's what I said!" He wriggled free, bouncing on the bed. "Can we have cake for breakfast?"
"No."
"But it's my birthday."
"Cake is for this afternoon. At your party."
"Oh yeah! The party!" He launched himself off the bed. "Is Alexander coming? He promised he'd come!"
"He'll be here."
"What time?"
"Two o'clock."
Leo's face scrunched up, thinking. "Is that soon?"
"A few hours."
"That's FOREVER."
She laughed, climbing out of bed. "Come on. Let's make birthday pancakes."
They spent the morning decorating. Elena hung the dinosaur banner while Leo "helped" by handing her tape and providing commentary.
"Higher, Mama! The dinosaurs need to be really high so everyone can see them!"
She adjusted it. "Like this?"
"Perfect!"
By noon, the small living room was transformed. Dinosaur plates on the table, green and blue balloons clustered in corners, streamers hanging from the ceiling. The chocolate cake sat in the fridge, waiting.
Mrs. Chen arrived at one-thirty with a wrapped present and her warm smile.
"There's the birthday boy!"
Leo ran to her. "Mrs. Chen! I'm three now! That's SO old!"
"Very old indeed." She hugged him, then straightened. "Your mama did a beautiful job with the decorations."
"Alexander helped! He bought ALL the dinosaur stuff!"
Mrs. Chen's eyes found Elena's, knowing and gentle. "Did he now?"
"He insisted," Elena said quietly.
"I'm sure he did."
At exactly two o'clock, the doorbell rang.
Leo shrieked and ran for the door. "HE'S HERE! ALEXANDER'S HERE!"
Elena opened it to find Alexander holding a large wrapped box, wearing jeans and a casual button-down—the most relaxed she'd ever seen him.
"Happy birthday, Leo!"
"You came! You really came!" Leo grabbed his leg. "Did you bring a present? Is it a good one? Can I open it now?"
"Leo, let him come inside first," Elena laughed.
Alexander stepped in, and Leo immediately dragged him toward the presents table.
"Look how many I got! But I didn't open any yet because Mama said I have to wait!"
"That was very patient of you."
"I know! I'm really good at being patient now because I'm three!"
Alexander caught Elena's eye over Leo's head, smiling. She smiled back, heart full.
Mrs. Chen appeared from the kitchen. "So you're the famous Alexander."
He straightened, suddenly looking uncertain. "Yes, ma'am."
"Mrs. Chen, this is my neighbor," Elena introduced. "She's been watching Leo since he was born ."
Mrs. Chen studied him with the sharp eyes of someone who'd seen everything and wasn't easily fooled. Then she smiled. "It's nice to finally meet you properly. Leo talks about you constantly."
"All good things, I hope."
"Mostly about your car and how you know everything about dinosaurs."
"Two of my best qualities," Alexander said seriously.
Mrs. Chen laughed. "I like him," she told Elena. "You can keep this one."
Elena's face heated. "Mrs. Chen—"
"What? I'm just saying." She patted Alexander's arm. "Come help me in the kitchen. Elena can watch Leo tear into those presents."
Alexander glanced at Elena, who nodded. He followed Mrs. Chen, looking slightly nervous.
In the kitchen, Mrs. Chen handed him a stack of plates. "Make yourself useful."
"Yes, ma'am."
She watched him arrange plates on the counter, then said quietly, "You love them."
His hands stilled. "Yes."
"Both of them."
"Yes."
"Good." She started cutting vegetables for the snack tray. "That boy needs someone who shows up. Someone who stays."
"I'm not going anywhere."
"People say that. But meaning it and doing it are different things."
Alexander set down the plates, turning to face her. "I mean it. I know it's fast. And it's complicated. But I love Elena. I love Leo. I'm not walking away."
Mrs. Chen studied him for a long moment. Then she smiled. "Good. Now help me with these carrots."
In the living room, Elena let Leo open his presents. Each gift brought squeals of delight—a dinosaur book from Mrs. Chen, new crayons and coloring books, a stuffed stegosaurus from Elena.
Then Alexander's gift.
Leo tore into the wrapping paper with abandon, revealing the excavation kit.
His eyes went wide. "MAMA! LOOK! I can dig for REAL dinosaurs!"
"Well, fake ones," Elena said. "But yes."
"This is the BEST PRESENT EVER!" He launched himself at Alexander, who'd emerged from the kitchen. "Thank you thank you thank you!"
Alexander caught him, lifting him up. "You're very welcome, buddy. Happy birthday."
Leo wrapped his arms around Alexander's neck, squeezing tight.
Over his head, Alexander's eyes found Elena's.
She saw it then—the love, clear and uncomplicated. The way he held her son like he was precious. The smile that reached all the way to his eyes.
And for just a moment, watching them, something flickered in her mind.
The dimples. The dark hair. The way Leo tilted his head when he was thinking—
No. She shut down the thought immediately. Impossible. Just coincidence. Just her mind making connections that weren't there because she wanted this to be real so badly.
"Mama! Can we have cake now?"
"After we eat real food."
"But I'm not hungry for real food!"
"Two bites of sandwich, then cake."
"FINE."
They gathered around the small table—Elena, Leo, Alexander, and Mrs. Chen. It felt like family. Like something Elena had never had but always wanted.
Leo managed three bites of sandwich before declaring himself full.
Elena brought out the cake, three candles blazing.
They sang happy birthday—Alexander's deep voice mixing with hers, Mrs. Chen harmonizing, Leo bouncing in his seat with pure joy.
"Make a wish!" Elena said.
Leo squeezed his eyes shut, thinking hard, then blew out all three candles in one breath.
"What did you wish for?" Alexander asked.
"Can't tell! Then it won't come true!" But Leo looked right at Alexander when he said it, smiling.
After cake—chocolate everywhere, exactly as expected—Leo tugged on Alexander's sleeve.
"Can we go for a ride? In your shiny car? Please please please?"
"Leo, Alexander just got here—" Elena started.
"I don't mind," Alexander said. "If it's okay with you?"
Leo bounced. "Mama, can we? Can we please?"
She looked at her son's hopeful face, at Alexander's gentle smile, at the joy radiating from both of them.
"Okay. But just a short drive."
"YES!"
Mrs. Chen stood. "I should head home anyway. Let you enjoy the rest of your day." She hugged Leo. "Happy birthday, sweetheart."
"Thank you.!"
She hugged Elena. "He's good for you," she whispered. "Both of you."
After she left, they cleaned up quickly—Alexander helping without being asked, Leo "helping" by eating leftover frosting.
Then they headed out.
