Chapter 134 A Day That Doesn’t Rush

Chapter 134 A Day That Doesn’t Rush
Morning came without urgency.

No alarms that demanded obedience.

No schedules pulling them in opposite directions.

Just light slipping through the curtains and the slow sound of a house waking up on its own terms.

Alexander stood at the kitchen counter in a simple shirt, sleeves rolled up, moving between stove and sink like he had done this a hundred times before.

Maybe he had.

Or maybe it just felt like it now.

Leo sat on the counter swinging his legs, carefully watching everything like it was a live experiment.

“Msma is still working,” Leo announced.

“She’s always working,” Alexander replied calmly.

“That’s not normal.”

“It is for her.”

Leo frowned. “That sounds sad.”

Alexander glanced at him briefly. “It can be.”

That made Leo quiet for a second.

Then he leaned forward. “Are you worka-wolik too?”

Alexander paused mid-stir.

“What?”

“Worka-wolik. Grandma said it.”

“You mean workaholic.”

Leo nodded quickly. “Yes. That.”

Alexander looked toward the living room.

Elena was already on her laptop.

Again.

He sighed under his breath.

“Sometimes,” he admitted.

Leo squinted. “Is that bad?”

“It depends on balance.”

“That sounds like a grown-up lie.”

Alexander almost smiled. “It’s not a lie. It’s just complicated.”

Leo considered that seriously.

Then, as if solving something important:

“Then don’t be complicated today.”

Alexander looked at him.

“…That’s actually good advice.”

“I know.”

Elena didn’t notice them at first.

She was already deep into something on her screen, one hand resting on her coffee mug, the other typing quickly.

The house was quiet except for kitchen sounds.

Comfortable quiet.

Until—

“Elena,” Alexander said.

No response.

“Elena.”

Still nothing.

He walked closer.

“Elena.”

She finally looked up. “Hm?”

“Breakfast is ready.”

“I just need to finish this section.”

“You said that twenty minutes ago.”

“It’s almost done.”

Leo called from the counter, “She’s doing worka-wolik again.”

Elena blinked. “What?”

Alexander leaned against the counter. “Workaholic.”

“That’s not what I am.”

“You’re currently doing it.”

“I’m finishing something important.”

“You always are.”

Elena sighed, not irritated yet, just tired in that focused way.

“Can we not do this right now?”

“We are doing this right now,” Alexander said gently.

“I’ll eat after.”

“That’s what you said always.”

Leo raised a hand. “She’s repeating behavior.”

Elena pointed at him without looking away from her screen. “You are not helping.”

Leo lowered his hand immediately. “I am observing.”

Alexander tried again, softer. “Elena. Five minutes. Just breakfast.”

“I’m close.”

“Close doesn’t eat.”

That made her pause.

A small one.

Then she exhaled.

“I can’t stop right now.”

Something in Alexander’s expression tightened slightly.

Not anger.

Concern.

He stepped closer to the table.

“Why not?”

“Because if I stop, I lose momentum.”

“That’s not true.”

“It is for me.”

“Elena—”

“Alexander, please.”

The way she said his name wasn’t sharp.

It was stretched thin.

Tired.

That mattered more.

He tried again, quieter. “You’re doing it again.”

“What?”

“Pushing everything else away.”

That landed.

Not loudly.

But clearly.

Elena finally looked at him fully.

“I’m not pushing anything away. I’m working.”

“And we’re here.”

A pause.

Leo looked between them, suddenly aware something had shifted.

Elena closed her laptop halfway.

Not fully.

Just enough to acknowledge him.

“I said I’ll eat after.”

Alexander didn’t move.

“That’s not what I’m asking.”

Silence.

The kind that wasn’t comfortable anymore.

Elena’s voice dropped slightly.

“You’re not my manager.”

“No,” he said immediately. “I’m your partner.”

That stopped her.

Not because it was dramatic.

Because it was true in a way neither of them ignored lightly.

Leo shifted uncomfortably. “Should I leave the room?”

“No,” both of them said at once.

That almost broke something.

Almost.

Elena rubbed her forehead lightly.

“I’m not trying to ignore you,” she said more carefully. “I just need to finish this today.”

Alexander softened slightly at that.

“I know.”

A beat.

Then:

“I’m worried you’re going to burn yourself out again.”

Elena’s expression shifted.

Tiredness showing now.

Real tiredness.

“I’m not there.”

“You were close last time.”

“That was different.”

“It always feels different until it isn’t.”

That quieted the room again.

Leo reached for a piece of fruit quietly, now very invested in not existing loudly.

Elena stared at her screen for a moment longer.

Then finally—

she closed it fully.

The sound of it shutting felt heavier than expected.

Alexander’s shoulders eased slightly.

Elena exhaled.

“I’m not ignoring you,” she said again, softer this time.

“I know,” he replied immediately.

A pause.

Then she looked at him properly.

“I’m just… trying to keep everything stable.”

“I know that too.”

Another silence.

Less sharp now.

More honest.

Leo slowly raised his hand again. “Can we eat now?”

Elena looked at him.

“Yes.”

He nodded. “Good.”

Breakfast happened after that.

Not rushed.

Just simple.

Leo talked too much about how pancakes should be classified as “soft bread categories” while Alexander flipped them carefully and Elena finally sat at the table without her laptop in front of her.

At some point, Alexander spoke quietly without looking up.

“Your mother becomes a workaholic in dangerous conditions.”

Elena lifted her cup. “Excuse me?”

Leo perked up immediately. “Dangerous conditions?”

Elena pointed at him. “You’re not helping again.”

“I’m observing history.”

Alexander glanced at her briefly.

“You do it when you’re stressed.”

“I do not.”

“You do.”

Elena narrowed her eyes slightly. “That sounds like accusation disguised as concern.”

“It is concern,” he corrected.

A beat.

Then softer:

“I just don’t want you disappearing into it again.”

That softened something in her expression.

She looked down at her plate for a moment.

“I’m not disappearing.”

“Then stay present.”

Elena didn’t answer immediately.

Then she nodded once.

“Okay.”

Simple.

Real.

Enough.

After breakfast, life split into its usual pieces again.

Elena returned to her laptop.

But this time she didn’t lock herself away.

She stayed in the same room.

Close enough to hear them.

And to be part of it.

Alexander washed dishes while Leo “helped” by wiping the same plate repeatedly in different directions.

The kitchen became slower.

Lighter.

At one point, Alexander stepped aside and checked his phone.

Victoria.

He answered. “Yeah?”

“I’m meeting Lily today,” Victoria said.

“You sound nervous.”

“I am not nervous.”

“You are absolutely nervous.”

A pause.

“I am… moderately prepared.”

Alexander smiled slightly. “That’s worse.”

“Thank you for your support.”

He leaned against the counter. “How’s she doing?”

“She asked if I still remember her favorite color.”

“And do you?”

“Yes,” Victoria said immediately.

“That was fast.”

“I’m responsible.”

“Debatable.”

A faint exhale on the other end.

Then softer:

“Tell Mom I’ll come by later.”

“I will.”

The call ended.

Elena glanced up briefly. “Victoria?”

“Meeting Lily.”

Elena’s expression softened slightly. “That’s good.”

“It is.”

By afternoon, Elena finally closed her laptop properly.

Not reluctantly.

Just finished.

She stood, stretching slightly.

“I’m done.”

Alexander looked up from where he was sitting beside Leo on the floor building something questionable out of blocks.

“Fully done?”

“Yes.”

“Emotionally done too?”

She considered that.

“…Mostly.”

“That counts.”

Leo immediately stood. “We’re going on a date now.”

Elena blinked. “What?”

Alexander glanced at him. “Where did you hear that?”

“You said it, let's go on a date.”

“That’s not what I said.”

Leo crossed his arms. “You said dinner outside is date.”

Alexander slowly looked toward Elena.

Elena raised an eyebrow. “Did we agree to that?”

“We did,” Alexander said calmly.

Leo nodded. “We did.”

Elena sighed lightly, but there was something amused underneath it now.

“Fine,” she said. “We’ll go on a date.”

Leo immediately brightened. “Am I invited?”

Alexander didn’t hesitate. “Yes.”

Leo thought for a second.

“Okay. I will observe the date.”

Elena laughed under her breath this time.

“Please don’t.”

“I will take notes.”

“Absolutely not.”

Evening came gently.

Not rushed.

Not heavy.

Just the city shifting into softer light again.

Elena stood in front of the mirror briefly before they left.

Nothing elaborate.

Just different from work.

Alexander appeared behind her quietly.

“You look tired.”

“I’m okay.”

“That’s not what I said.”

She turned slightly toward him.

“I know.”

A pause.

Then she stepped closer without thinking too much about it.

Rested her head lightly against his chest for a moment.

No words.

Just presence.

Alexander wrapped his arms around her carefully.

Not tight.

Just steady.

Leo called from the hallway.

“Are we dating yet?”

Elena closed her eyes briefly. “We are leaving for it.”

“Good,” Leo said. “I approve.”

Alexander murmured quietly near her hair.

“He approves everything.”

“That’s true,” Elena replied softly.

They stayed like that for a moment longer.

Before stepping out into the evening together.

Not as a family under pressure.

Not as people fixing something.

Just—

people going out.

On a normal night.

That felt quietly extraordinary.
