Astrid's eyes widened as she stared at her mother, Queen Sofia, in disbelief. "You can't be serious, Mother," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

"I'm afraid I am, Astrid," Queen Sofia replied, her expression firm. "Your marriage to Prince Ryder of the neighboring kingdom has been arranged. It's a strategic alliance that will secure our kingdom's future."

Astrid felt like she had been punched in the gut. She had always known that her life would be dictated by her royal duties, but she had hoped to have some say in her choice of husband.

"But Mother, I don't even know him," Astrid protested.

"That's irrelevant, Astrid," Queen Sofia said. "Prince Ryder is a suitable match, and this marriage will strengthen our kingdom's position. You will do as you're told."

Astrid knew that arguing would be futile. Her mother had made up her mind, and she would have to accept her fate. But she couldn't help feeling a sense of resentment towards Prince Ryder, a man she had never met, but who would now control her life.

The rest of the day passed in a blur as Astrid tried to come to terms with her new reality. She knew that she would have to meet Prince Ryder soon, and the thought filled her with anxiety.

That evening, as she was getting ready for bed, her best friend, Lady-in-waiting, Elara, came to her room, her face filled with concern.

"Astrid, I'm so sorry," Elara said, hugging her tightly. "I know how much you wanted to choose your own husband."

Astrid smiled weakly. "It's not your fault, Elara. Mother has made up her mind."

Elara frowned. "But Prince Ryder? He's so...serious and brooding. Are you sure you'll be happy with him?"

Astrid shrugged. "I don't have a choice, Elara. But I'll make the best of it."

The next day, Astrid was summoned to the throne room to meet Prince Ryder. She had spent hours preparing for this moment, trying to calm her nerves and steel herself for the encounter.

As she entered the throne room, she saw Prince Ryder standing by the window, his back to her. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with a strong jawline and piercing blue eyes. Astrid felt a flutter in her chest as he turned to face her.

"Prince Ryder," she said, curtsying low.

"Astrid," he replied, his voice deep and smooth. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you."

Astrid felt a surge of disappointment. She had expected him to be cold and distant, but instead, he seemed...kind.

As they spoke, Astrid found herself feeling more and more at ease in Prince Ryder's presence. He was charming and witty, with a quick smile and a sharp mind. She couldn't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, this marriage wouldn't be so bad after all.

But as the conversation turned to their upcoming wedding, Astrid's doubts crept back in. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was making a mistake, that she was sacrificing her own happiness for the sake of duty.

As the meeting drew to a close, Prince Ryder took her hand in his. "I know this isn't what you wanted, Astrid," he said, looking into her eyes. "But I promise you, I will do everything in my power to make you happy."

Astrid felt a spark of electricity at his touch, and for a moment, she forgot about her doubts and fears. Maybe, just maybe, this marriage would be the start of something beautiful.

But as she looked into Prince Ryder's eyes, she saw something there that gave her pause. A hint of sadness, a glimmer of secrets untold. And Astrid wondered, what was he hiding?

As the days passed, Astrid found herself growing more and more accustomed to Prince Ryder's presence. He was attentive and courteous, always making sure she was comfortable and happy. But despite his charming exterior, Astrid couldn't shake the feeling that he was hiding something from her.

One night, as they were walking in the gardens, Astrid confronted him. "Prince Ryder, can I ask you something?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Of course, Astrid," he replied, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"What's troubling you?" she asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. "You seem...distracted sometimes. Like there's something on your mind that you're not telling me."

Prince Ryder's expression changed, his eyes clouding over. "I'm just worried about the future, Astrid," he said. "Our kingdoms are counting on us to secure this alliance. I don't want to let anyone down."

Astrid wasn't convinced. She knew there was more to it than that. But she didn't push the issue, not yet.

As the night wore on, they continued their walk, the tension between them palpable. Astrid couldn't help but wonder what secrets Prince Ryder was keeping from her, and whether their marriage would ever be more than just a convenience.

The next day, Astrid received a mysterious letter, slipped under her door. It was unsigned, but the words sent a shiver down her spine:

"Don't trust him, Astrid. Prince Ryder is not what he seems."

Astrid felt a surge of fear. Who could have written this? And what did they mean? She knew she had to be careful, but she couldn't shake the feeling that her whole life was about to change forever.
