Chapter 117 Partners?

Chapter 117 Partners?
Ethan remained seated, his posture immaculate, as the low hum of conversation and soft clinking of glasses filled the hall. Clara's figure moved through the crowd, unremarkable to anyone else, but Ethan's attention registered her approach. A slight nod acknowledged her presence, efficient and polite, and then his gaze swept past her, catching Ava seated a few rows back.
Ava's presence was calm and precise. Her posture, the way she held herself, and the faint lift of her chin marked her confidence. Ethan didn't linger on her, he didn't need to, but he absorbed it all in a single, measured glance. She was aware of the room and its gaze, yet unaware that his eyes had already counted her presence, quietly noting it without reaction.
Clara approached Ethan's PA, who had been hovering nearby, and spoke in low, precise tones. "We've reviewed the preliminary aspects of the collaboration," she explained. "It would be best for the CEO to meet her in person. He should see her directly."
The PA listened carefully, nodding as she laid out the details. She asked a few clarifying questions, ensuring she fully understood the request, and then turned back to Ethan, her steps smooth and unobtrusive.
"Sir," the PA said quietly, "Clara recommends you meet her in person. She's outlined the proposal and suggests it would be valuable for you to see her directly."
Ethan's expression remained unreadable, composed, but his mind registered the significance immediately. A meeting meant assessment, observation, an evaluation of presence and demeanor, he gave the nod he always reserved for matters requiring action. "Arrange it," he said quietly.
The PA inclined her head and returned to Clara to confirm the message. She gave a brief nod of acknowledgment before blending back into the crowd, leaving Ethan seated and composed.
Just then, Lena leaned in, her voice soft but firm. "I'd like to use the restroom."
Ethan's hand twitched, instinctively rising to accompany her, but she subtly shook her head, refusing. He inclined his head, composed, and gave a single instruction to his PA. "Follow her and ensure she's safe."
Clara approached Ava with a polite but purposeful stride, weaving through the clusters of guests with practiced ease. She lowered her voice so only Ava and her manager could hear. "We're ready to make the introduction to the CEO," she whispered. "Follow me, just a brief greeting regarding the collaboration. Keep it professional."
Ava nodded, inclining her head subtly. Her manager gave a small approving smile, and together they followed Clara as she navigated toward the front of the room. The crowd parted unobtrusively, unaware of the small procession weaving through the mingling guests.
Ava inclined her head, following closely as Clara guided her to the side of the room where Ethan was standing by the wine table. He was calm, composed, casually holding a glass, scanning the room with measured attention.
Ava's eyes met him for the first time, taking in his tall frame, the sharp cut of his suit, the effortless confidence in the way he held himself. Every detail struck her, the way his hands rested on the table, the slight crease at the corner of his eyes, the smooth cadence of his movements. He was handsome, commanding and magnetic.
As they got to the wine table, Ethan looks up, offering a brief, polite nod to Clara and a simple greeting to Ava. His acknowledgment was courteous, professional, but otherwise entirely neutral. He didn't linger, didn't study her, and there was no trace of fascination in his expression. To Ava, who had been expecting at least a flicker of recognition from someone of his presence, it was disarming.
Clara stepped slightly forward, bridging the interaction. "Sir, this is Ava Meniate," she said, her tone calm and precise. "We wanted to introduce her regarding the collaboration proposal."
Ava smiled lightly, her tone measured and confident. "It's an honor to finally meet you, Mr. Sinclair. I've heard a great deal about the projects your team has been leading."
Ethan inclined his head. "Thank you. I'm sure Clara has kept you well informed."
She gave a small laugh, trying to soften the air. "She has, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how this collaboration unfolds. It sounds promising."
He nodded once, his voice even. "I trust Clara's judgment. She'll make sure everything moves forward properly."
Up close, Ava couldn't help but feel a quiet charm in his presence. the effortless way he held himself, the light tap of his fingers on the glass, it all drew her in. He looked even better than she had imagined, composed and controlled, and for a moment, she found herself quietly captivated. Yet he stayed polite and professional to Clara, giving nothing of personal interest.
Clara continued, outlining the key points of the collaboration in a quiet, efficient voice. Ethan listened, nodding occasionally, his responses minimal and measured, polite, engaged only to the degree required, giving nothing of personal interest.
Ava felt a faint jolt of surprise at his lack of reaction. Here she was, fully present, confident, expecting some sign of curiosity or attention, and there was none. He treated her as he would any other business contact, entirely neutral, entirely professional.
Ethan stayed attentive, but his eyes swept across the room from time to time, just then they landed on Lena, and his PA. Lena had been searching for him, and he gave a subtle gesture to his assistant. She caught sight of him instantly and moved gracefully toward him. A faint smile tugged at his lips, a rare, fleeting expression, and Ava, standing nearby, noticed it.
As Lena approached, Ethan subtly shifted, a slight urgency in his posture signaling he wanted to wrap up the current discussion. His expression was composed but brisk, conveying that the meeting's formalities should conclude.
Clara finished her brief explanation of the collaboration, and Ethan inclined his head slightly. "I trust your judgment," he said smoothly, voice steady, "carry on as you see fit."
Ethan glanced briefly back at Ava, his composure unchanged. "It was nice meeting you, Miss Meniate. Enjoy the rest of your evening."
His tone was polite, final, leaving no room for further conversation. Before Ava could respond, he'd already turned, walking toward Lena confidently.
Ava stood frozen for a moment, still holding her glass. Her lips parted slightly, the faintest trace of disbelief flickering across her face. She wasn't used to being dismissed so easily.
Her gaze followed him through the crowd; His effortless authority seemed to draw attention without him trying. She exhaled softly, irritation curling beneath her ribs.
But just as she was about to turn away, something caught her eye.
Lena had reached him now, and the subtle change in his expression was unmistakable, the faint ease in his shoulders, the warmth in his gaze that hadn't been there moments ago.
Ava found herself studying them both. Ethan looked at Lena the same way she wanted to be looked at, it wasn't loud or dramatic, he looked at her light she was really valuable, his attention stayed on Lena even as others tried to catch his eye, it was everything Ava had expected to command for herself.
