Chapter 9 AN ESCAPE
"What?" I frowned, furrowing my brows. "What did you just say?"
"What you thought you heard." She stopped a few paces away from me. "Dashiell wants you to get rid of the baby," she repeated.
"Impossible." Instinctively, I placed my palms on my belly as I shook my head. "That's the last thing he would ask me to do. He will never ask me to terminate my pregnancy. Never."
"But he did." She walked forward, closing the distance between us.
"That's a lie."
"A lie? Why do you think so?" She looked amused, cocking her head to the side.
"I know he never loved me, but Dashiell won't order me to abort the pregnancy. If there's one thing he had always wanted, it was a child."
"But not with you," she hissed.
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"I think this will prove some facts to you, Nova. Your dearest husband gave his consent." She brought a piece of paper out from her bag and waved it in my face.
"What?" I snatched the note from her and read through it, my eyes widening the more I did. I had known Dashiel for two years and had seen him sign papers. There was no way I could have mistaken
his signature. "Impossible," I whispered, taking a step back. Tears welled in my eyes, but I refused to let them drop. "When did he sign this?" I asked, my voice barely a murmur as I peered at her. "Last night when he was with me." She smirked.
"That's not true. He returned early last night. He couldn't -"
"Oh, he did return early. But..." She leaned down to whisper, "He never went to work yesterday. He spent the day in my house. In my arms."
I broke down at that. The tears I kept at bay rolled down my cheeks like droplets of rain. I took a step back as different emotions clung to me. How did it turn out this way?
Dashiell made me believe he had changed. I trusted him, and he.... No, it's not possible. Yet, the evidence was in my face. The more I thought about it, the more it felt like a knife was plunged into my heart, with someone twisting it deviously.
"No. No, no," I uttered, stepping back as I shook my head.
"Hold her!" I heard Lilith give the order before I felt strong arms grip me. Before I knew what was happening, I was already on the bed, with the doctors peering down at me with sadistic smiles on their faces.
"No!" I screamed, trying to get up from the bed, but they held me down. "Let me go!" I yelled, thrashing despite knowing I was no match for them. "Let me go!" I continued to struggle as the doctor brought a small table close. The instruments on it were enough to cause me to scream as I struggled harder.
Lilith stood by the side, laughing through it all.
"Make sure you get that stinky baby out of her belly. I don't care if you destroy her womb or whatever. I just need the child gone," she gave her instructions.
"Bitch!" I growled at her, fighting the doctors, who were surprisingly stronger than I imagined doctors would be.
I knew I was no match for them, but I wasn't ready to give up. Not when I knew saving my baby was my priority. I needed to get as far away from this place as possible. Even if Dashiell didn't want the baby, it doesn't mean I don't.
I couldn't tell where I got the strength from, but the moment my feet collided with the table, and sent all the things on it crashing to the floor, I broke free from them. I guess they were concerned with the things I threw on the floor, more than on me.
With their attention diverted, I pulled up from the bed and made for the door, pushing Lilith out of the way. She didn't react on time until I was out of the door and running straight for the exit. I didn't care who was on my way, as I pushed through as many as I could, and made a mad dash for the door, knowing I had to escape....this was my only chance.
Seeing how determined that bitch was to do Dashiell's bidding, I knew I would only end up dead in her hands.
I ran out of the exit, madly dashing towards the parking lot. I didn't care where I was heading to, or how I intended to outrun my pursuers, but -
All the air in my body whooshed out when I collided with a car coming towards me. Luckily, the car wasn't at full speed, else it would have been an entirely different matter.
I fell on the hood of the car, from the collision, gasping from the pain. I knew I had to run, to put as much distance between me and the hospital, but I couldn't take any step forward, not with my body feeling like it was about to give out any second. My eyes twirled as I tried to rise, but couldn't.
I felt powerful arms around me as a gentle, yet familiar voice asked, "Are you okay?"
"Please take me out of this place," I choked out, relaxing in his arms as I gave in to the darkness, praying he wasn't part of the bad guys.
