Chapter 102 I will find them
I had Nova transferred to another hospital after that episode, knowing she wasn't safe. Whoever that man who attacked her was, I knew they would return. I had to keep my wife safe and away from
them.
I sat beside my wife's hospital bed, watching her chest rise and fall with each gentle breath. She was finally sleeping, thank goodness. The past few hours had been a blur of police reports and hospital tests, but at least she was safe now. Safe from all the stress and finally at peace.
As I watched her sleep, I reached out to remove the stray strands of hair from my face. My heart ached to think that I would have lost her had I been a minute late. That man would have killed her.
"I'm sorry." I leaned over and placed a kiss on her forehead before I sat back in the chair, taking her hand in mine. Deep down, I felt I was the reason for everything that had happened to her. Even though we didn't know who the attackers were or why they wanted her, I had this hunch that it had something to do with me.
"I will find those guys," I vowed, looking towards the window. Even if it's the last thing I do, I will never let those men get away with it. Touching my wife was the mistake they made. It was almost like they were challenging me, mocking me for not keeping a close watch on her.
Nova stirred in her sleep and I reached out, to caress her face, murmuring sweet words to her, to make her relax. Though she looked peaceful, she occasionally scrunched her face at each turn. "It's okay. You are safe now. No one will hurt you anymore," I vowed. The moment my gaze went to the red marks on her neck and the bandage on her forehead from the wound she sustained when the man hit her head on the bed, my blood boiled. It was difficult holding myself back, but I did, knowing I had to do this another way.
Since the police didn't seem to be much help, and just wanted evidence before they could open the case, I knew I had to do things my way, even though it wasn't legal. Well, anything to keep my wife
bloody safe.
I pulled out my phone and dialled a number I only called when I needed help. It was one I used when Nova left. Though he was no help back then, I couldn't ignore the fact he was the best man in the field with many reviews, especially for cases like this. It rang twice before a low, gravelly voice answered.
"Ryder Investigations," came a husky voice which rang like I had just woken him from sleep.
"Ben, it's me," I said, keeping my voice low. "I need your help."
I will find them
"What the freaking hell." Ben's tone turned serious. "Tell me more."
I filled him in on the details - the hospital, the strangled screams, the syringe. Ben listened intently, asking occasional questions. I tried as much as I could to describe the man. Even though half of his face was obscured, his eyes had enough details, or so I thought. I just didn't want to leave anything unsaid and miss giving out vital details. "Any leads on the attacker?" he asked after a few minutes of silent deliberating. I heard his fingers hitting his desk, a habit he formed over the years.
"None. The police are stumped. That's why I need you." I doubt the police would be of help as they were only after the cameras in the hospital and the man's facial looks, something I failed to provide as his face was obscured. Ben was the best in the field, and I knew he could locate the man even with the little details I gave.
Ben grunted. "I'll take the case. But I need additional information. Description of the attacker, any witnesses... Like more details. Not just his eyes. Anyone can have that. I just want to know his body build and anything odd you discovered. Like the way he walked. You know."
I provided everything I had-the attacker's build, height, and clothing, adding as much as I could to help him.
"I'll start digging," he said. "But I need you to keep this quiet. Can't let the attacker know we're onto him."
"I understand," I said.
Ben's voice turned serious. "One more thing. You're not the only one looking for this guy. I've heard rumours of a similar case in other cities. This might be bigger than we think. I don't think your wife
is the only one targeted. Someone else close to her might be."
A chill ran down my spine at the thought of someone close to Nova getting attacked. I knew undoubtedly who the person or people might be. Her babies. "Keep me posted, Ben."
"You'll be the first to know," he said before hanging up.
I glanced at my wife, still sleeping peacefully. I'd do whatever it took to keep her safe. Even though it would take getting caught in a crossfire to do that, keeping her safe wasn't just my priority, it was
my job.
I held her hand in mine and laced our fingers together, lifted it, so I could place a kiss on the back of her palm.
"I won't let them go scot-free," I promised, my tone resolute.
