Chapter155 You can't control how this plays out. You can only control your part in it
Chloe

Julian's hand found mine, his fingers intertwining with mine as we watched this tentative courtship unfold. I felt his thumb stroke across my knuckles, a silent question.

I squeezed back, but the gesture felt mechanical. My mind was racing, calculating all the ways this could go wrong.

What if Kim got hurt? What if Ethan got hurt? What if this destroyed the fragile relationship Kim and I were just beginning to build?

Later, after Ethan had finally left and Kim had retired to her room to settle in properly, Julian and I lay in our bed, but sleep felt impossible.

"You're tense," Julian observed, his arm around my shoulders as I rested my head on his chest, though I couldn't seem to relax into him the way I usually did.

"This could be a disaster," I said quietly, voicing the fear that had been building all evening.

Julian's hand stilled in my hair. "What could be?"

"Kim and Ethan." I lifted my head to look at him. "Julian, what if this goes badly? I just got my sister back, and Ethan... God, Ethan's been through enough."

"You think it's a mistake?"

I sat up, pulling my knees to my chest. "I don't know what to think. Kim doesn't know about Ethan's feelings for me. She doesn't understand how complicated this is."

"And you're afraid to tell her," Julian said, not a question.

"How do I tell her?" The words came out sharper than I intended. "How do I explain that the man she's interested in has been in love with me for years? That he's seen me at my worst, that he's sacrificed everything for me, that there's this whole history between us that she can't possibly understand?"

Julian was quiet for a moment, his fingers tracing patterns on my arm. "You're afraid she'll back away from both of you."

"Or she'll get involved anyway and someone gets destroyed in the process." I pressed my palms against my eyes. "What if she falls for him and he can't get past his feelings for me? What if he falls for her and she finds out about the history and feels like she was competing with a ghost? What if—"

"Chloe." Julian's voice was gentle but firm. "What if it works out?"

I looked at him through my fingers. "What?"

"You're catastrophizing. What if Kim is exactly what Ethan needs to finally move forward? What if this is the universe giving all three of you a chance at something healthy?"

"But what if it's not?" I dropped my hands, feeling suddenly exhausted. "Julian, I can't lose either of them. I can't be the reason they get hurt."

Before Julian could respond, we heard the soft creak of floorboards from Kim's room—back and forth, like she was pacing. The sound stopped, then started again.

Finally, after what felt like several minutes of this restless movement, we heard careful footsteps in the hallway. She paused outside our door for a long moment before speaking.

"Chloe?" Kim called softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm sorry, I know it's late, but... would it be okay if I asked you something? I can't sleep."

My heart sank. I sat up carefully, pulling Julian's robe around me. "What is it? Is everything okay?"

Kim appeared in our doorway, wearing pajamas and looking suddenly much younger than her twenty-four years. Her hair was slightly mussed, like she'd been running her hands through it, and there was something in her expression—a nervous excitement mixed with insomnia that made my anxiety spike.

"I'm really sorry to bother you both. I just... the time difference, and I keep thinking..." She took a shaky breath. "Can I ask you something?"

"Of course." I glanced at Julian, who was now fully awake and watching with concerned eyes.

Kim wrapped her arms around herself. "Ethan. Is he... does he have someone? A girlfriend, I mean?"

The question hung in the air between us, and I felt all my earlier fears crystallizing into this single moment. This was it—the crossroads where I could either be honest about the complications or let my sister walk blindly into something that could hurt everyone involved.

"Kim..." I started, then found myself looking away, unable to meet her hopeful eyes.

Her face fell slightly. "He does, doesn't he? God, I'm so stupid. Of course someone like him would be taken."

"No, he's not seeing anyone," I said quickly, then immediately wished I could take the words back when her face lit up.

"Really?" Hope bloomed in her expression. "Because I really like him, Chloe. I know we just met, but there's something about him... the way he looks at the world, the way he cares about people. I haven't felt this way about anyone in a long time."

I felt my hands clench in my lap. "Kim, there's something you should know about Ethan and me—"

"I know you two are close," she interrupted, her voice eager. "That's part of what I like about him. The way he talks about you, it's clear he really loves you as family. It says something about his character, you know?"

I felt Julian's hand find mine, squeezing gently. The irony of her words—loving me as family—made me look down at our joined hands, unable to speak for a moment.

"It's more complicated than that," I managed to say.

Kim's expression grew more serious. "What do you mean?"

I looked at Julian, seeking guidance, but his face was carefully neutral, leaving the choice entirely to me. Tell her everything and risk scaring her away, or let her navigate this blindly and risk everyone getting hurt later.

"Ethan has been in love with me for years," I said finally, the words feeling like stones in my mouth. "Not as a sister. As... more than that."

Kim went very still. I watched her face carefully as the information sank in—first confusion, then a flicker of understanding that made her take a small step backward. Then something that looked like hurt, mixed with embarrassment.

"Oh." She was quiet for several heartbeats, her gaze dropping to the floor. "So when he was looking at me tonight... was he seeing you instead?"

The question cut deeper than I'd expected. "Kim, I'm sorry. I should have told you earlier, but—"

"Does he still love you?" she asked, her voice smaller now.

I wanted to lie, to make this easier for her, but she deserved the truth. Though even as I opened my mouth, doubt crept in. What I was about to say was based on years of knowing Ethan, of seeing his devotion, his sacrifice.

But tonight—tonight when he'd looked at Kim, there had been something I'd never seen before. Something that made me wonder if I was about to tell her about a past that might already be changing.

"I think so. Yes," I said softly, though the words felt less certain than they once would have.

Kim nodded slowly, processing this information. "And you? Do you love him back?"

"Not the way he wants me to," I said softly. "I never have. But that doesn't make it less complicated."

She stood there for a long moment, her arms still wrapped around herself protectively. Finally, she looked up at me, and I could see her trying to piece together her dignity.

"Thank you for telling me," she said, her voice carefully controlled. "I... I need to think about this."

She turned to go, but I called after her. "Kim, wait."

She paused in the doorway, not quite looking back.

"Whatever you decide," I said carefully, "I don't want this to come between us. You're my sister, and I just got you back. I can't lose you over this."

Kim's smile was small but genuine. "You won't lose me, Chloe. We're family now. But I need some time to figure out what this means."

After she left, Julian and I lay in the dark, both of us wide awake.

"How do you feel about that?" he asked quietly.

I stared at the ceiling, trying to sort through the tangle of emotions in my chest. "Terrified," I admitted. "What if I just ruined everything for all of us?"
