Chapter 166: The Crossroads of Fate
Alyssa's POV
"Leon, your reign of lies ends now!" I shouted, my voice raw as I launched myself at him once again. The corridor around us was a ruined battlefield-smoke swirling amid shattered concrete and splintered steel-each sound echoing the agony of our struggle. Blood, sweat, and pain mingled in the air as we traded blow after brutal blow.
Leon's sneer was unyielding even as a deep gash ran across his forehead. "You're persistent, Alyssa. I almost admire that-but persistence won't save you tonight." His tone was laced with venom, each word a razor slicing into my determination.
I gritted my teeth, dodging a vicious swing that nearly connected with my cheek. "I won't let you take any more lives-especially not Ethan's!" I roared, my heart pounding like a war drum. Every muscle in my body screamed in protest as exhaustion clawed at my limbs, but I refused to relent.
For a brief moment, our fierce combat paused as we circled each other, both of us bloodied and breathing raggedly. My vision blurred with fatigue and fury as Leon's eyes glittered with cruel delight. "You always were too sentimental," he taunted. "That foolish loyalty will be your undoing."
Before I could retort, a sudden crash reverberated down the corridor. Ethan burst onto the scene, determination etched on his face despite his obvious wounds. "Alyssa, I'm here!" he cried out, reaching to intervene. His presence was a lifeline-a reminder of everything I was fighting for.
Leon's eyes flashed as he pivoted to face Ethan. "So the knight in tarnished armor comes to save you, Alyssa?" he sneered. With a swift motion that belied his battered state, Leon lunged at Ethan.
I barely had time to register the horror as Leon's blade, hidden until now, found its mark. A sickening gasp tore from Ethan's throat as crimson stained his shirt, and he crumpled, clutching at his side.
"No!" I screamed, dropping my guard as I sprinted to Ethan's side. His eyes, filled with shock and pain, met mine. "Stay with me, Ethan. Don't you dare leave me now," I pleaded, my voice trembling as I tried to staunch the flow of blood with my trembling hands.
Leon stepped back, a triumphant smile twisting his lips as he watched the scene unfold. "You see, Alyssa," he said coolly, "your little rescue plan only hastened the inevitable."
His gaze shifted between me and the fallen Ethan. "Now, you stand at a crossroads. Do you finish me off, or do you waste precious seconds saving him?"
I felt the weight of his words like a crushing boulder. Time seemed to slow, the world narrowing to the desperate sounds of Ethan's ragged breathing and the distant echo of chaos in the fortress.
My hands shook as I pressed them against Ethan's wound, trying to stem the bleeding while my eyes burned with fury at Leon's challenge.
"Leon… answer me," I spat, voice trembling with barely contained rage. "What is it you truly want? More power? More control over everything we hold dear?"
He laughed, a cold sound that reverberated in the emptiness of the ruined corridor. "You still don't understand, do you? This isn't about power-it's about proving that even the strongest bonds can be shattered. Look at you now, torn between duty and sentiment. How far will you let your heart rule your choices?"
Every fiber of my being screamed at me to end this madman's life. Yet, my mind raced with the terrible possibility that if I killed Leon now, I might lose Ethan-and perhaps even the hope that kept us fighting. I glanced down at Ethan, whose eyes pleaded silently with me to act quickly before his life slipped away. Blood seeped between my fingers as I pressed harder, trying desperately to slow the flow, but the wound was deep and relentless.
"Leon!" I bellowed, struggling to rise despite the pain. "If you value the chaos you've created, show me you're willing to fight on equal terms. Let Ethan live!"
Leon's laugh was a whisper of malice. "You think mercy will win this war? Mercy is for the weak. And you, my dear, are about to be broken."
He advanced again, his blade glinting ominously in the sparse light. My mind swirled with an agonizing choice: save Ethan, whose life was slipping away with every heartbeat, or focus every ounce of my dwindling strength on ending Leon's treachery once and for all. Both options promised unbearable loss.
"I won't-" I began, but my words were cut short as Leon's foot tripped me from behind, sending me sprawling against the cold, hard floor. Pain flared in my side as I struggled to regain footing. Leon loomed over me, his eyes dark with triumph as he raised his blade for a final, decisive strike.
The air seemed to hang heavy, every second stretching into an eternity. I scrambled to my knees, glancing desperately at Ethan, who lay motionless yet clinging to life, and then back at Leon. My vision tunneled with resolve, knowing that my next decision would echo through every life we had fought to protect.
"Choose, Alyssa," Leon hissed, his voice like ice. "Will you let your love for him blind you to the end, or will you finally embrace the cold logic of survival?"
The world around me blurred into chaos-the distant cries of my allies, the rumble of collapsing stone, and the pounding of my heart. I raised my trembling hand, weapon poised as I weighed the unbearable cost of each action. In that agonizing moment, the future of our fight, the lives of everyone I cared about, and my own soul all hung in the balance.
Before I could scream out my decision, the sound of approaching reinforcements echoed in the distance-a grim reminder that time was running out. My fingers tightened around the trigger, my mind locked on the desperate task ahead. Ethan's life teetered on the brink, and Leon's eyes shone with cruel anticipation.
"Time's almost up, Alyssa," Leon growled, his blade raised for the final blow. "Make your choice!"
And as I stood there, teetering between two impossible fates, the brutal reality of the final showdown crashed down upon me-one that would decide not only the fate of my allies but the very course of our future.
