Chapter 143 Vows That Matter

Chapter 143 Vows That Matter
AMELIA POV
The wedding day arrives with perfect weather, the kind of golden hour light that makes everything look like it's been dipped in honey, warm and glowing and almost too beautiful to be real.
I stand in the cottage bedroom where we are lodged, looking at myself in the mirror, barefoot in my simple white dress, hair loose around my shoulders the way Daniel loves it. Harper fusses with the flowers in my hair, small white blooms she picked this morning, and her hands shake slightly.
"You're more nervous than I am," I tell her, meeting her eyes in the mirror.
"I'm not nervous, I'm emotional," she corrects, blinking rapidly. "There's a difference."
Through the window I can see the beach where twenty guests are gathering, string lights already glowing between wooden posts even though the sun hasn't set yet, and a guitarist I don't recognize is playing something soft and lovely that drifts up on the evening breeze.
"It's time," Harper says, squeezing my shoulders. "Are you ready?"
I nod, not trusting my voice, and she hands me my bouquet, simple wildflowers that smell like summer and promise, and we walk out together toward the beach where everything that matters is waiting.
The sand is cool under my bare feet as I make my way toward the small gathering, and I see faces turn toward me, smiling, some already crying. My mum clutches a tissue and beams at me. Nathan stands beside Daniel looking exhausted but happy. Oliver waits at the front in linen pants and a button-down shirt, surprisingly serious for once.
And Daniel stands there watching me walk toward him with an expression that makes my breath catch, like I'm something precious and chosen and exactly what he wants.
No one gives me away because I belong to myself, and that truth feels radical and right as I close the distance between us and take Daniel's hands. His fingers are warm and steady, and when he squeezes gently I squeeze back, both of us anchoring each other. Harper stood in a corner with two people she came along with for assistance, taking pictures of us.
Oliver clears his throat and smiles at the gathered crowd. "We're here today because these two people decided to do something incredibly brave. They decided to choose each other again, on purpose, with full knowledge of each other's flaws and histories and broken pieces."
The guitarist stops playing, and the only sounds are the waves and the breeze and someone sniffling behind me, probably Harper.
"The first time they stood together and made promises, those promises were hollow," Oliver continues, and I feel Daniel tense beside me. "Built on contracts and obligations and expectations that had nothing to do with love. But they didn't let that be the end of the story. They fought their way to something real."
He looks at Daniel. "Your vows?"
Daniel takes a shaky breath and turns to face me fully, still holding my hands, and I see tears already gathering in his eyes. "Amelia, I promise to see you. Every day. Not the version of you I want or the version that's convenient, but you. The real you."
His voice cracks and he pauses, gathering himself, and I squeeze his hands tighter.
"I promise to listen when you speak. To honor your voice, your thoughts, your feelings, even when they make me uncomfortable. To choose you, not out of obligation, but out of love. To be worthy of the grace you've shown me."
Tears stream down my face and I don't bother wiping them away.
"I promise to never take you for granted again. To build a partnership, not a possession. To love you as my equal, my match, my choice. Every single day for the rest of my life."
He's crying now too, and someone behind us sobs audibly, and Oliver's eyes look suspiciously bright.
"Amelia?" Oliver prompts gently.
I take a breath that shudders in my chest and hold Daniel's gaze, needing him to hear every word, to know I mean them with everything I am. "Daniel, I promise to speak my truth, even when it's hard, even when it would be easier to stay quiet. I promise to take up space, to not make myself smaller to fit into places I don't belong."
His thumbs stroke across my knuckles and I see recognition in his eyes, memory of all the times I disappeared myself to keep the peace.
"I promise to love you without losing myself. To choose you every day, knowing I could choose differently, knowing I'm staying because I want to. I promise to forgive without forgetting, to honor what we've survived while building something new."
My voice gets stronger as I continue. "I promise to build a life together, not just a marriage. To be your partner, your equal, your choice. No conditions, no clauses, just us choosing each other over and over again."
Oliver produces two simple bands from his pocket, gold and unadorned and nothing like the ostentatious ring Daniel gave me the first time. He hands one to Daniel, one to me.
"These rings are circles with no beginning and no end," Oliver says. "A reminder that love is not a contract with an expiration date, but a choice you make every day."
Daniel slides the ring onto my finger with shaking hands, and I do the same for him, both of us crying openly now, and when our eyes meet I see everything we've survived and everything we're building reflected at me.
"No clause," Daniel whispers, so quietly only I can hear.
"No ending," I whisper back, and it feels like the most sacred promise we've made.
Oliver's grinning now. "By the power vested in me by the internet and the state of Florida, I now pronounce you married. Again. But better this time." He looks at Daniel. "You may kiss your wife. Your actual wife. Your partner. Your equal."
Daniel cups my face in both hands, his thumbs wiping away my tears even as his own fall, and he kisses me as the sun touches the horizon behind us, painting everything in shades of gold and pink and orange. The kiss is soft and deep and full of promise, and around us, I hear our small gathering erupt in cheers and applause.
When we finally pull apart, both grinning through tears, Harper's voice cuts through the noise. "Finally! The real wedding!"
Everyone laughs, the sound mixing with the ocean and the music that's started playing again, and I rest my forehead against Daniel's, both of us breathing hard.
"Thank you for fighting for us," I whisper.
He cups my face again, his touch gentle and reverent. "Thank you for also fighting for us."
We turn to face our guests, hands clasped tight, and they surge forward with hugs and congratulations and tears of their own. Evelyn pulls us both into an embrace filled with happiness, crying into our shoulders about how beautiful it was, how perfect.
Harper photographs everything with tears streaming down her face, somehow managing to capture moments between wiping her eyes and adjusting her lens. Nathan claps Daniel on the back and tells him he did well, perfect this time. Even Beatrice, standing slightly apart from the group, offers a stiff nod that might be approval.
The sun sinks lower, the golden hour turns to twilight, and someone lights the torches placed along the beach, flames dancing in the growing darkness. The guitarist plays something upbeat now, and Oliver announces it's time for the first dance.
Daniel leads me to the patch of sand cleared for dancing, and we sway together as stars begin to appear overhead, and nothing has ever felt more right than this moment, this choice, this man holding me like I'm precious and chosen and exactly enough.
"I love you," he murmurs against my hair.
"I love you too," I say, and the words feel like they hold the weight of everything we've survived and everything we're building. "So much."
Around us, other couples join in the dancing. Harper pulls Oliver onto the sand, and he protests but goes willingly. Nathan and Rebecca sway together, their baby asleep in Rebecca's arms.
