Chapter 257 Having a Baby
Sophia snapped back to reality when she heard Daisy's laughter, realizing her earlier actions had been a bit over the top. She felt a wave of panic and quickly grabbed the bowl from David's hand, taking a sip herself to cover up her embarrassment.
"I'll do it myself!"
She tried to look tough, but inside, she was a mess.
David couldn't help but laugh at her reaction, his eyes full of affection.
Alison and Wesley were sitting nearby, both sharp-eyed and perceptive. Watching David and Sophia's natural, warm interaction, they seemed to reminisce about their own younger days, their faces full of love and happiness.
"You two are really something to envy," Alison said with a smile.
Sophia and David both looked up, their eyes meeting. Sophia's face turned slightly red, but a complex mix of emotions surged within her.
What was there to envy?
David's gentleness was just an act, not to be trusted. He had been just as gentle with Emily before.
No, even gentler than he was with Sophia.
David smiled softly, his eyes full of tenderness. "Alison, it's your and Wesley's relationship that we should envy."
"But looking at you two, you seem like a loving couple," Alison said, shaking her head with a smile, her eyes showing encouragement. "Young people should cherish the ones in front of them. Don't wait until it's too late and then regret it."
Sophia's heart skipped a beat, and her smile faded slightly.
She glanced at David secretly and found him looking at her, his gaze deep and gentle, as if he was trying to say something. But she sneered inwardly, 'What game is he playing now?'
"You are right," David said, his eyes never leaving Sophia's face. "I will cherish every moment."
Sophia's heart raced, her cheeks warming, but she tried to stay calm.
Sophia thought to herself, 'Sophia, get a grip! David is just acting! You've been fooled once, you can't be stupid again!'
"So, Ms. Brown, will you cherish the one in front of you?" David asked.
Sophia was taken aback, her emotions wavering, her eyes reflecting her inner turmoil.
What was gotten into David today?
Sophia didn't know what to say, so she chose to stay silent and quietly finished her meal. The atmosphere at dinner was incredibly strange, with David acting like a completely different person, constantly fussing over Sophia.
At first, Sophia felt uncomfortable, but then she decided to just go with it.
If David wanted to serve her, so be it. It wasn't a bad deal for her; having someone to wait on her made things easier.
"Daisy, are you close with David?" Sophia finally asked.
"Yeah. David often comes to see Mom and Dad, and he always brings me toys. David is the best person in the world!" Daisy said, waving her hands excitedly after swallowing a bite of chicken.
David clearly heard Daisy's words, and he couldn't hide his smile.
"What about me?" Sophia asked, feeling a bit jealous. She had watched Daisy grow up, after all.
Daisy thought for a moment and said, "You are also the best person in the world."
Sophia gave David a triumphant look, as if to say, "See, I'm just as good as you!"
Before Sophia could say anything, Daisy continued, "So, if the best Sophia and David got married, they would have the cutest baby in the world. Mom, don't you think so?"
Daisy turned to Alison and then to Sophia, asking, "Sophia, can I play with your baby when you have one?"
Sophia's face turned bright red. How could she explain that she and David were already divorced and technically couldn't have a baby together? But looking at Daisy's sparkling eyes, she couldn't bring herself to say it.
At that moment, David spoke up.
Sophia thought he was going to explain their relationship to Daisy, but instead, David said, "Sure, Daisy. You can come to my house and play with my child."
Sophia felt a chill run through her. How could she forget? David had another child on the way with Emily.
Sophia didn't want to continue this topic. She picked up a paper she had left on the side table before dinner and asked Wesley, "Is this the dissertation from your PhD student?"
"Yes, it's about quantum computing," Wesley said enthusiastically. "Quantum computing is advancing rapidly. Google's quantum computer has achieved quantum supremacy, which will have profound impacts on cryptography and material science."
Sophia nodded in agreement and added, "Yes, the potential of quantum computing is enormous, but we still need better materials and more efficient algorithms to improve qubit stability and error correction. Who knows when it will be fully realized."
"Have faith in the young people today. They'll achieve it soon," Wesley said, looking at Sophia with a hint of regret. "If it weren't for the incident with your family, you would have graduated with your PhD by now. Sophia, you have a gift. If you had continued in physics, you could have become one of the greatest physicists in the world. Sophia, if only..."
"Wesley," Sophia interrupted, "there are no 'ifs.' What happened back then was something no one wanted. I can't focus on physics now, so thank you, Wesley."
Sophia understood Wesley's intention. He hoped she would return to school and continue her studies.
But now, Sophia was burdened with the deep-seated vendetta of the Brown family. She had more important things to do.
Wesley had expected Sophia's response. He knew she couldn't go back to the way things were. He just regretted losing such a rare physics genius like Sophia.
He looked at David with a complex expression and said meaningfully, "David, Sophia has changed a lot since marrying you."
Sophia used to be carefree.
Wesley didn't say the last part out loud, but David could see the accusation in Wesley's eyes. He lowered his head in shame. Over the years, Sophia had hidden all her brilliance, content to be his wife.
Sophia had given her heart to him, but David had trampled on it.
These years, he had wronged her.
The adults were lost in their thoughts, and probably only Daisy was genuinely happy at the table.
By the time they finished dinner, it was already 9 PM. Daisy had school the next day, so Sophia and David decided to leave.
"David, I'm entrusting my excellent student to you. Make sure she gets home safely. If she gets hurt, I won't forgive you," Wesley said with a smile.
"Don't worry, Wesley. I'll get her home safely," David replied, opening the car door for Sophia. "Get in, I'll take you home."
