Chapter 67

Chapter 67
“Catalina must have already told her mother.” Damien wasn’t really paying attention to what Emily was saying. He was busy trying to control his emotions. The man took another drink. He’d surely remain jealous if he saw Samuel and Emily this close. However, he couldn’t bring himself to fire Samuel anymore.

“Good job,” Damien said softly, but Emily didn’t take the comment well, thinking he still wasn’t satisfied with her work.

“Can I take your compliment seriously?” Damien turned to look at Emily. They stared at each other for quite a while until Damien looked away first.

“It’s sincere,” Damien muttered. Emily sighed, choosing not to dwell on Damien’s compliment.

“What about your plans? Isn’t this the right time to wrap them up?” Damien pondered Emily’s question. Was it time for him to introduce Emily to the executives at Johnson Hotels Corporation?
“The fact that Charles and Caroline were having an affair before he divorced Victoria’s mother is enough to drive them away. Even now, Charles hasn’t made any effort to see me. Victoria’s father really doesn’t care about her.” Everything Emily said was true. Should they just do as Emily suggested?
“What plan do you have in mind to make that happen?” Damien asked, still not looking at her. Emily stared at Damien for a long time. Speaking without looking at the person he was talking to wasn’t like Damien. He always looked straight in the eyes. Why was he acting like this? Emily was curious, but once again she chose not to think about it.
“I’m will ask them to leave Victoria’s house because they don’t deserve to live there,” Emily said seriously
“You can do that, but—” Damien didn’t finish his sentence. Was he rejecting her idea?
“But what?” Emily asked.
“It would be better if I removed Charles and Brian from the company first,” Emily furrowed her brows.
“Wouldn’t the result be the same no matter which one we do first?” The sudden attention from Damien made her blink slowly—she felt nervous.
“The Johnson Hotels Corporation’s anniversary celebration is coming up soon. It will be your first public appearance as Christian’s heir after undergoing treatment abroad,” Damien looked back at the glass in front of him.
“At least that’s what people think.” Emily fell silent. She processed what Damien said.
“Does that mean I’ll be meeting the people who work at Victoria’s company?” Emily asked anxiously. She hadn’t expected her role as Victoria to go that far.
“Just giving a speech and interacting with the people who work for Victoria’s grandfather,” Damien replied. Actually, he wanted to go back to his room, but his conversation with Emily wasn’t over yet. Being near the girl felt difficult now. He restrained himself from doing anything that might make Emily question their contract. Damien didn’t want Emily to leave again because he couldn’t control himself.
“But—” The chair creaked as Damien stood up.
“Don’t overthink it. You just need to be present at the event.” After saying that, Damien leave the dining room. Emily sighed. She could act like Victoria in front of her family, but act like an heiress in front of a crowd? Emily didn’t know how to do that because she was just a girl born into a poor family.

“Damn it!” Austin turned around as soon as he heard Damien’s curse.
“Emily,” Damien stopped. He typed a message to the bodyguard escorting her.
“What’s wrong with Emily?” Austin watched Damien, who was holding back his anger, through the dashboard mirror.
“She broke the contract. She went to her parents’ house.” How could she have outwitted the bodyguard assigned to her? Damien could overlook the first breach of contract. But a second one was unacceptable. Emily’s reckless actions could ruin his plans.
“What are you going to do?” Damien glanced at his watch. He wanted to teach Emily a lesson right away, but he couldn’t because he was on his way to a meeting. Damien saw his phone vibrating. His bodyguard had just sent text that he was with Emily and on their way home.
Seeing that Damien wasn’t responding and was focused on typing on his phone, Austin refocused on driving.
You need to explain what you did today. Damien sent that message to Emily.

The sound of the elevator doors opening made Emily stand up. She stopped short when she came face to face with Damien. He looked at her impassively.
“This won’t happen again,” Emily said softly. She knew she was wrong.
“I panicked when I heard my father was sick.” Emily’s excuse didn’t change Damien’s expression.
“I—”
“I don’t care what happens to your family. This is the last time, Emily.” Damien warned her.
“Think before you act. Your impulsive actions could ruin my plans.” Damien’s words made Emily feel even worse. She hadn’t thought things through. A single call from her mother telling her that her father was sick had made her think of nothing but her father’s condition. Damien sighed.
“What happened?”
“I got a call from my mother saying my dad was sick,” Emily bit her lip. If Damien knew she’d been tricked by her mom, he’d definitely get even angrier.
“She needed money to take my dad to the hospital, but none of it was true. She lied to me because she wanted to ask me for money.” Emily lowered her head. She felt so stupid. She knew exactly what her mother was like—why had she still been fooled by that old woman?
“Is she the woman who caused a scene at the hotel back then?” Emily nodded. Damien looked at Emily, who was still keeping her head down. Usually, the girl always looked at him with confidence. Perhaps her mother’s actions still had Emily in shock.
“I don’t know what your family relationship is like, but what happened today and what happened at the hotel wasn’t right, Emily. Your mother’s actions weren’t right. Don’t use the word ‘family’ to gloss over it. You have to fix this.” Emily nodded slowly. She wouldn’t be fooled by her mother again.
“Look at me,” Emily lifted her head and looked at Damien. She didn’t know what his gaze meant.
“Do you want me to deal with your mother’s problem?” Emily’s eyes widened at Damien’s question.
“Your mother asked you for money, didn’t she? I can give her the money so she won’t bother you.”
“It’s not necessary, Damien. I can handle it. I cut ties with her a long time ago. She just called using my father as an excuse. This won’t happen again.” Damien stared at Emily for a long time. This girl was still so innocent. Emily didn’t know how the world worked. She was just putting on a tough front so she wouldn’t appear weak.
“Talk to me if you need help,” Damien said, then walked past Emily.
“Thank you,” Emily’s voice stopped Damien in his track. He turned to look at her.
“Thank you for offering to help me.” Damien looked at Emily for a long time. He wanted to tell her he didn’t want her to struggle, but he held himself back.
“Good night, Emily.”
