Chapter 9 chapter 9
Chapter 9
After her conversation with Sean, Natalie went to Jojo’s room. She had a small cake in her hands, and after thinking about it, she knocked on the door.
“Jojo, darling, can you let mommy in? I need to tell you something.”
Jojo’s childish voice came through the room, “I don’t want to talk to mommy. I might say something bad and make you upset again.”
Natalie didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Although Jojo was only five years old, her thinking capacity and her sensitivity were far beyond her age.
Natalie cleared her throat and said, “I just want to apologize to my sweet angel, okay? Besides, your uncle Sean has reprimanded mommy. Aren’t you going to make me feel better?”
“No, I don’t want to talk to you.”
“Honey, I have your favorite vanilla cake, don’t you want to take a bite?”
“No. I don’t feel like eating a cake. Besides, you said that I can’t have anything sweet until I have recovered from my cold.”
Sean, who had gone to the washroom, came back and saw Natalie outside Jojo’s room. He smiled and walked over, “Is she making things difficult for you?”
Natalie looked at the man with a helpless expression, “I think that I hurt her pretty badly. She doesn’t even want to talk to me. I even offered her favorite cake, but she said she doesn’t want it.”
Sean nodded before he said, “Let me.”
Natalie moved aside and allowed Sean to stand in her spot.
Sean cleared his throat and spoke, “Hey, darling. We just had a serious conversation with your mommy, and we have agreed that from now on, I am your daddy. You can call me daddy, and you will be my only daughter.”
There was a moment of silence in the room before Jojo’s screams that almost blew the roof off were heard, “Ah, really? Can I really call Uncle Sean, daddy?”
“Of course, you can,” Sean nodded with a smile before he continued, “Will you come out and hug your daddy now?”
“Yes… Yes…” Rushed small footsteps were heard in the room, and before Sean and Natalie knew it, the bedroom door was opened from the inside.
Jojo came out with a beaming smile on her face. She was so happy that she felt like flying.
When she saw Sean, she threw herself at him as she shouted in her childish, sweet voice, “Daddy.”
Sean knelt and caught her in his arms. The moment he heard the angelic voice call him daddy, his heart melted into a puddle. It was a feeling he had never experienced before, and he enjoyed every bit of it.
“Baby,” He kissed Jojo on the cheeks, and his face broke into a happy smile, “I will be your father from now on, and I will protect you, okay! If anyone bullies you, just come to daddy, and daddy will teach them a lesson.”
Jojo nodded happily. She looked at her mother and said, “Mommy, thank you so much. Today is the happiest day of my life, and I cannot wait to announce to the whole world that I finally have a father, just like all my friends.”
…
“Nat, are you sure that you want to go back?” Sean questioned as he looked at Natalie.
“Sean, it has been five years, and I think it is time that I go back. My mom is still waiting for me to get her justice, and she can’t wait anymore.”
“It is okay. I will always be here for you if you need anything.”
“Thank you, Sean.”
Sean looked at her and wanted to say something. He held her hand and began, “Nat, actually, I…”
Before he could say anything, Natalie’s phone rang. Seeing that it was her nurse assistant, she immediately picked up the call.
“What’s up, Naomi?”
“Doctor Hart, you need to come to the hospital right now. There is an emergency.”
“What? What happened?”
“A patient has been rushed in, and he is barely holding up. We have run a few tests, and if our conclusion is correct, he needs heart surgery as soon as possible.”
Although she had already handed in her resignation letter, to her, saving a life was more important than anything else.
She ended the call and looked at Sean. Her voice was rushed as she said, “We need to rush to the hospital ASAP. A life is on the line.”
Sean did not ask any questions. He was also a doctor, and saving lives was his priority.
“Should we take my car or your bike?” Sean asked outside the parking lot.
Since she became a surgeon, Natalie bought herself a bike. It was more convenient to rush somewhere in case of an emergency using the bike than a car.
And because she had no idea what condition the patient was in, she made a quick decision.
She looked at her wrist watch and said, “If we take the bike, it will take us approximately ten minutes to reach the hospital. I think it would be more convenient.”
“Give me the key and hop on,” Sean said. Natalie threw the key at him and hopped on. She wrapped her arms around Sean and signaled for him to start the bike.
The sound of the engine roared on the road, straight to Sean’s heart. Although they had been best friends for five years, this was the first time that Natalie was close to him physically.
Feeling her arms tighten around his waist, Sean felt his heart shudder. Only if they were not rushing off to save someone, he would have enjoyed this moment to his heart’s content.
As for Natalie, she was calming her mind for the upcoming surgery. Although she was already a renowned surgeon, every time she got to work on a case, her heart would rush with the same adrenaline just like when she operated on her first patient.
“Sean, can you go a bit faster?” Natalie shouted through the helmet.
“This is already the maximum speed. But don’t worry, we are almost there.” Sean shouted back.
