Chapter 36 chapter 36
Chapter 36
When they reached home, Natalie was emotionally exhausted, so she headed straight to bed. But sleeping only for thirty minutes, she woke up with a start.
Her forehead was covered in cold sweat, and she looked like she had just woken up from a nightmare.
Sean walked in just in time to find her in her current situation. He hurriedly went over and pulled her into his arms, giving her a tight hug.
“Honey, what happened? Are you okay?”
Natalie hugged Sean back and gave out a deep sigh.
After a while, she let go. Her face was still pale, but her eyes had gained clarity, “I… I just had a bad dream. I really can’t fall asleep.”
Sean looked at her and asked in a gentle voice, “Do you want me to keep you company?”
Natalie shook her head, “That is not necessary. You should probably go back to the hospital. I will be fine on my own.”
Sean frowned as he shook his head, “Honey, how can I leave you in such a condition. I have already spoken to Martin, and he has no problem. I told him we have a family emergency to deal with, and he said we should take as much time as we need.”
“Thank you.”
“Come on, I know you must be hungry. I made some nutritious chicken soup for you. Come and have it before it turns cold.”
Natalie shook her head and said, “I am not hungry.”
But just as her words fell, her stomach gave out a loud growl that made her look away in embarrassment.
She licked her parched lips, not knowing what to say.
Sean looked at her and wanted to tease her, but he knew that Natalie was not in a good mood. He carried her from the bed and walked towards the ground floor.
Although Natalie thought that she had no appetite, the moment she tasted Sean’s chicken soup, she could not put the bowl down.
“Do you possess some kind of hidden magic in your hands? I have never tasted soup this delicious.”
Sean laughed as he added some more, “Drink more if you like it. I know that you don’t have much of an appetite to take something heavy, so this soup would do.”
“Thank you, babe. You really know how to take care of me.”
After the simple lunch, Natalie finally remembered that Sean had said something to her while they were coming from the cemetery.
“Uhm, babe, you said that you had collected some information about my father. Can I have a look?”
Sean nodded, “Of course. Come with me,”
He led Natalie to the study room and helped seat on the wide chair. He had already printed everything and placed it in a file, which he handed to Natalie.
Natalie carefully read through everything, and when she was done, she could not describe the feelings in her heart.
“So, my dad had really cheated, but he covered it up pretty well?”
“Yeah… he had gone on a volunteer mission, and that was how he ended up entangled with Sophia. He had just married your mom, and their marriage was still pretty new, so Tyron did not dare say anything. He paid Sophia some money, but he never expected that she would fall pregnant from their one night together.”
“I was actually thinking that he might have been forced, or maybe Vivian’s mom used dirty tricks to get him. But this is something he had done of his free will, so he cannot be forgiven.”
“Sophia secretly kept his photo, and when she found out that she was pregnant, she started to look for him. But she did not have a lot of money, and she only knew his first name, so there was nothing much she could have done.”
“It still does not make it right. It also means that Vivian is older than me, because when my father went to the village, my mother was yet to conceive.”
“What are you going to do now? Looks like your dad never expected that his casual relationship would lead to the woman falling pregnant, and when she showed up, he was stunned, and he did not know what to do.”
“Well, it is his problem for not zipping up his pants when he was required to,” Natalie said in a cold voice.
She looked at the information and continued, “I have a strong feeling that this mother-daughter had a hand in my mother’s accident; I just don’t have any evidence yet.”
“Honey, don’t worry. I will do everything I can to find out what happened to our mother. But first, we will need to go to the police station and reopen the case.”
“I don’t think that is possible. When I asked my father to reopen the case back then, he said that the case had already been closed, and unless we presented new evidence, the police would not be willing to waste their resources on a closed case.”
“That is bullshit!” Sean said. “It is the police's responsibility to make sure that every case is solved to its absolute best. It is also their responsibility to find new evidence, because that is their job.”
Natalie frowned. She had never thought about it from that angle.
“What should I do now? I will never no peace until I am certain that my mom died from the accident, and that it was purely an accident.”
Sean looked at his wrist watch, and after realizing that there were still a few hours before Jojo was picked up from school, he looked at Natalie and spoke, “Go and get changed. We will go to the police station and reopen your mother's case file.”
“Okay.”
Soon, Natalie and Sean were outside the police station that handled her mother’s case. Natalie nervously rubbed her palms together, feeling anxious at the ordeal.
Sean hugged her across the shoulders and spoke in a reassuring voice, “Don’t be nervous, honey. I will be with you every step of the way, and you don’t have to be afraid of anything. I will make sure that our mom gets the justice that she deserves.”
“Thank you so much, babe. You have no idea how much that means to me.”
