Chapter 295 The Shadow's Truth
Chapter 295 The Shadow's Truth
Austin's POV
Aria's smile widened, predatory and cold as she leaned forward in her chair. "Scarlett is Shadow."
The words hit me like a physical blow. My hands gripped the wheels of my wheelchair so tightly my knuckles went white against the metal rim.
"What did you just say?" I managed to choke out, though my voice sounded foreign to my own ears.
Aria's smile became even more predatory. "I said Scarlett—who is now Victoria—is Shadow. The Shadow you've been trembling about since your Terminus Fortress days."
My world tilted on its axis. The chair felt like it was spinning even though I wasn't moving. Shadow. The name that could make grown men wet themselves in fear. The Chief Instructor whose reputation preceded her like the Angel of Death herself.
"You're lying," I whispered, but even as the words left my mouth, I knew they rang hollow. The pieces were falling into place with sickening clarity—her impossible fighting skills, the way she'd humiliated me so effortlessly, the confidence that radiated from her even when outnumbered.
"Am I?" Aria tilted her head, enjoying every second of my torment. "Tell me, Austin, when you hear the name Shadow, what do you feel? That little flutter in your chest? That spike of pure terror?"
I couldn't answer. My throat had closed up completely. Because she was right. Every operative who'd ever set foot in Terminus Fortress knew about Shadow. The instructor who'd never lost a single combat assessment. The woman who could break a man's spirit before she broke his bones.
And I'd tried to destroy her.
All those carefully laid plans, all that scheming and plotting—it had been nothing more than a cosmic joke. I'd been a mouse challenging a lion, too stupid to recognize the predator until her claws were already at my throat.
"This changes everything," I breathed, slumping back in my wheelchair as the full weight of my situation crashed down on me.
"Oh, it gets better," Aria continued with obvious relish. "Shadow isn't her only identity. She's also Dr. S and Dark Eagle."
"What do you want from me?" I asked, my pride finally crumbling under the weight of reality.
"Access to Jack Rothschild," Aria replied. "We require him to help us locate Dr. Sterling."
Before I could ask more questions, Aria was suddenly in motion. Her hand disappeared into her purse and emerged with a syringe filled with an electric blue liquid that seemed to pulse with its own inner light.
"What the hell—" I started, but she was already moving.
Her speed was inhuman. One second she was sitting across from me, the next she was behind my chair with the needle sliding into my neck before I could even process what was happening.
"Jesus Christ, what did you just inject me with?" I gasped, my hand flying to the injection site.
"Consider it a signing bonus," Aria said, stepping back to admire her work. "That's the latest viral agent from the Dark Organization. It'll improve your physical capabilities and neural response time by roughly three hundred percent."
The change wasn't gradual. It hit me like a freight train made of molten lava. Every nerve in my body erupted into white-hot agony, and I pitched forward out of my wheelchair, hitting the marble floor hard enough to see stars.
The pain was indescribable. It felt like every cell in my body was being rewritten from the inside out, like I was being torn apart and reassembled by invisible hands. I was vaguely aware of Dennis and Violet rushing toward me, but Aria's sharp command stopped them cold.
"Don't touch him. The process needs to complete uninterrupted."
Ten minutes. Ten minutes of absolute hell that felt like ten hours. I convulsed on the floor like a fish out of water, my muscles seizing and releasing in patterns that defied human anatomy.
Then, as suddenly as it had begun, it stopped.
I lay there panting, waiting for the next wave of agony. But instead, something extraordinary happened. I felt... strong. Stronger than I'd felt in years, maybe stronger than I'd ever felt in my life.
Slowly, carefully, I pushed myself up from the floor. My legs, which had been damaged in my fight with Scarlett, held my weight without protest. The chronic pain that had plagued me since the accident was completely gone.
"Incredible, isn't it?" Aria asked, watching my amazement with obvious satisfaction. "You're now operating at peak human potential. Enhanced reflexes, increased strength, improved cognitive function. Consider it a taste of what the Dark Organization can offer."
I took a tentative step, then another. It was like being reborn.
"There's just one small catch," Aria continued conversationally. "The serum requires monthly maintenance injections. Miss one, and your enhanced blood vessels will rupture. Death is quite rapid and extremely unpleasant."
The euphoria drained out of me like water from a broken dam. "You're saying I'm now dependent on you."
"I'm saying you're now invested in our success," she corrected. "As long as you serve Scythe faithfully, you'll continue to receive the injections. It's really quite simple."
I looked at Dennis and Violet, both of whom were staring at me with expressions of shock and fear. My sister looked particularly pale, probably realizing that her brother had just sold his soul to an organization that could turn him into a superhuman or kill him with equal ease.
"Do I still have a choice in this matter?" I asked quietly.
"Of course you do," Aria said with mock sincerity. "You can choose to work with us, or you can choose to die horribly when your blood vessels explode. Free will is a beautiful thing."
I closed my eyes, feeling the weight of the moment settle on my shoulders. When I opened them again, I was looking at a future I'd never planned for.
"I'll work for Scythe," I said.
"Done." Aria gathered her purse and stood. "Remember to quickly find information about Dr. Sterling and show your worth to Scythe."
She left without another word, her footsteps echoing in the corridor until they faded to nothing. I stood in the middle of my office, feeling the enhanced blood flowing through my veins, and realized that everything had changed.
"Violet," I said, my voice steady despite the chaos in my head.
"Yes?" she whispered, still staring at me like I might explode at any moment.
"You're going to marry Jack Rothschild after all."
Her face lit up with surprise and relief. "Really? I don't have to marry Uriah?"
"No. I'm going to the Rothschild estate tomorrow to discuss the wedding arrangements." I paused, letting the implications sink in. "But you'll have additional duties. I need you to use your relationship with Jack to find out everything you can about Dr. Sterling's whereabouts."
Violet nodded eagerly. "I'll do whatever you say, Austin."
I looked out the window at the Manhattan skyline, feeling the serum's enhancements sharpening my vision until I could see details that should have been impossible from this distance.
It was a dangerous game I was entering, but for the first time since this all began, I had real power backing me up. Shadow might be a legend, but legends could bleed.
And I was going to make sure she bled plenty.
