Chapter 291 Consequences and Sweet Moments

Chapter 291 Consequences and Sweet Moments
Scarlett's POV

The ballroom held its breath as Gabriel stepped forward, his presence commanding immediate attention. His usually perfect composure had shifted into something far more dangerous – the cold authority of a man who'd built an empire and wasn't afraid to destroy those who threatened it.

"Jack," Gabriel's voice cut through the silence like a blade. "Your behavior tonight has been absolutely disgraceful. You clearly need proper education on how to conduct yourself."

I watched Derek's face drain of color as Gabriel continued, his tone leaving no room for argument.

"I'm arranging for you to stay in one of the remote guest rooms at the Rothschild estate, where I'll personally ensure you receive the strictest private tutoring available."

Derek stumbled forward, desperation cracking his usually composed demeanor. "Gabriel, please reconsider. Jack is still young, he made a mistake—"

"Precisely because he's a Rothschild," Gabriel interrupted, his words precise and unforgiving, "I have an even greater responsibility to teach him proper principles and conduct. Our family name means something."

Derek's eyes darted around the room before landing on Alice Rothschild, clearly hoping for support from the family matriarch. But Alice's response was as cold as winter frost.

"He deserves whatever he gets," she stated flatly, her usually warm demeanor nowhere to be found.

Brian and Michael materialized at Gabriel's side with military efficiency. "Take them both," Gabriel commanded.

As the guards escorted the trembling Jack and his struggling father from the ballroom, I felt a mixture of satisfaction and warmth.

The drama wasn't over, though.

Everett Carter stepped forward, his attention fixed on his sister with laser precision. Hazel, who'd been trying to blend into the crowd since her performance earlier, froze as his cold gaze found her.

"Hazel," Everett's voice was arctic. "You will return home immediately and confine yourself to your room. You're not to step foot outside without my explicit permission."

Hazel's practiced innocence crumbled as genuine fear flickered across her features. "Brother, what did I do wrong? I was just trying to help—"

"Drop the act, Hazel." Everett's tone could have frozen champagne. "You know exactly what you've done. Your performance tonight was noted by everyone present."

I watched Hazel's face cycle through emotions – confusion, fear, and finally a calculating look as she tried to gauge how much trouble she was really in. When she opened her mouth to protest again, Everett held up a hand.

"Every word you speak now will double your punishment. Choose wisely."

Hazel's mouth snapped shut, and she gathered her designer clutch with trembling fingers before hurrying toward the exit, her usual graceful stride reduced to an undignified scurry.

But Austin Cooper wasn't willing to let this slide.

"Mr. Carter," Austin called out from his wheelchair, wheeling himself closer. "Don't you think you're being a bit harsh? It seems like you care more about protecting outsiders than your own family."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop another ten degrees as Everett slowly turned to face Austin. The smile that crossed his lips was anything but warm.

"Mr. Cooper," Everett replied with dangerous politeness, "I wasn't aware that disciplining my sister required your input or approval."

Austin's face flushed, but he pressed on with the desperation of a man whose plans had spectacularly backfired. "I'm simply saying that perhaps—"

"Let me be crystal clear," Everett interrupted, stepping closer to Austin's wheelchair. "Whatever romantic notions you harbor regarding my sister, abandon them immediately. The Carter and Cooper families will never be united through marriage."

The public humiliation was swift and brutal. Austin's mouth opened and closed soundlessly as Everett continued his calculated demolition.

"While Hazel may indeed be shallow and foolish enough to match your temperament," Everett's words landed like physical blows, "the Cooper family simply lacks the standing to align with the Carter name."

Austin's knuckles went white where he gripped his wheelchair armrests. His face cycled through shades of red and purple as rage and helplessness warred within him. But there was nothing he could say – Everett had spoken the truth that everyone in the room understood but rarely voiced so directly.

With a final glare of impotent fury, Austin gestured to Dennis, who began pushing his wheelchair toward the exit. The humiliation was complete and public.

Everett smoothed his jacket and turned to Dad with practiced grace. "Mr. Langley, thank you for a most enlightening evening. I believe it's time for me to take my leave."

As Everett moved through his goodbyes, his eyes met mine across the room. There was something in that look—loaded with unspoken meanings about our arranged engagement.

After Everett's departure, the tension in the room began to dissipate, but the energy remained charged. Gabriel appeared at my side, and I was surprised when he produced an elegantly wrapped Belgian chocolate from his jacket pocket.

"For you," he said simply, beginning to unwrap the gold foil with careful precision.

The gesture was so unexpected, so domestic, that conversations around us began to quiet. I could feel the curious gazes of New York's elite as they witnessed Gabriel Rothschild performing such an intimate, tender act.

"Gabriel, you don't need to—" I started, but he silenced me with a look.

"I want to," he said, offering me the perfectly shaped chocolate truffle.

Before I could respond, two small voices piped up from behind us.

"Mommy, you have to try it!" Liam bounced on his toes, his eyes bright with excitement. "Daddy picked it out special just for you!"

Luna tugged on Gabriel's jacket sleeve. "Daddy, you should have one too! We can all share the sweetness together like a real family!"

The innocent enthusiasm of the children transformed the moment entirely. The watching crowd's expressions softened from curiosity to something approaching warmth as they witnessed this family scene.

Gabriel's expression melted as he looked down at Liam and Luna. "You think so?"

"Yes!" they chorused. "All together!"

And so there we were – Gabriel carefully breaking pieces of the chocolate for each of us, while Liam and Luna giggled and insisted we all eat at the same time. The sweetness burst across my tongue, but it was nothing compared to the warmth that spread through my chest as I watched Gabriel's face transform with genuine joy.

"This is perfect," Luna declared, chocolate smudged on her chin.

"The best," Liam agreed, reaching up to grab both Gabriel's and my hands.

For a moment, the complications of engagements and family politics faded away. We were just a family sharing chocolate and laughter in a crowded ballroom.

But even in that sweet moment, I caught sight of Dad in my peripheral vision. His masked face was turned toward us, and while I couldn't read his expression fully, the tension in his posture spoke volumes. He was not pleased with this display of affection between Gabriel and me.

Gabriel must have noticed too, because he leaned in and whispered something to Liam and Luna, making them giggle and nod enthusiastically before running off to Dad.
