Chapter 141
Chapter 10
Have your life, ever been in shambles? Where your future looked like an endless dark tunnel where you will have to spend the rest of your days, depressed and lonely?
And at that point of time you believe, that this can't get any worse, than it already has! And BAM! Suddenly, you realize it COULD, in fact get worse and it just did!
That was Mia's life now. Standing on the sidelines, watching while her life sunk at the bottom of the ocean, all on it's own and she could do nothing!
Because marrying a man against her wishes and signing off her future to a man, she barely knew, wasn't enough!
No! On top of all that, the whole world now needed to know about this blasted sham of marriage.
The gates of the small registry office was barred by a horde of people with cameras and microphones, who seems to be pushing and pulling each other, trying to squeeze in through the metal doors of the building.
While the two offices on duty were barely able to hold them up.
Mia and Oliver had only descended half of the stairs when they realized what was happening at the front door and as it turns out, it was a bit too late because suddenly they were surrounded in the clicks and snaps of cameras and their bright white flashes which almost turned Mia, momentarily blind on the spot, unable to see anything else.
People were yelling too, asking questions but Mia was too shocked to understand anything at the moment.
This was what she was afraid of, and now it was going to happen anyway!
She had been a part of this crazy paparazzi tango for too long, to not to understand what was happening and what would no doubt happen next.
By tomorrow morning, their shocked faces will be splashed across every single stupid newspaper and scrappy magazine's front pages and then - and then....
"Oh! God!" She wanted to howl in anguish because the thing that she fears most was going to come to life.
How foolish and naive, had she been to agree to this, knowing what could happen if it blew up on their faces?
She had closed her eyes tightly against the blinding flashes and had gripped the railings of the stairwell tightly as her legs shook, about to give up!
She wanted to cry out, but no sounds came, her breathing laboured while the voices grew, inside her head and outside alike.
What they were saying, she could not tell.
But she knew one thing very clearly now- her life had just gone to hell.
Suddenly, she felt a hand encompass her narrow shoulders while another supported her slim waist and hauled her up the stairs and away from the crowded stairwell.
But she kept her eyes tightly shut until she felt the hard bench beneath her and she leaned on it.
A warm strong body was pressed to her side, her shoulders in his soft embrace.
“Mia…Mia… Are you alright?” She slowly opened her eyes to look at her new husband’s concerned face. They were once again sitting on the wooden bench outside the registar’s office on the second floor of the building and if one listened carefully, they could still hear the chaos from downstairs.
Mia heaved a great sigh, deaeated!
It was over! While Karik hovered over herlike an over anxious duck. “what is it? You look sick, are you going to faint again?”
She wanted to say no, but at the end she just shook her head and sat there stairing at her white heeled shoes, her favourite and lucky pair she called them. She don’t even know why she wore them today, perhaps hoping that somehow a stupid pair of shoes could grant her wish and…No! She won’t go there today.
There was enough on her plate already, without adding her heart break on it’s top.
No, she needed to get a grip on herself and do s much damage control as she could.
Now, first of all she will need to call her family and alert them about it all.
Her marriage and it’s consequences.
By tomorrow morning the press would have dugged up every single speck of dirt on her background and since, her brother’s gangster case was like a gaint sore thumb that could not be hidden easily and neither could it be forgotten because, it hadn’t happened that long ago so, it would definitely come out and she will need to warn her family, beforehand.
“Joy, you bastard! I am going to kill you as soon as I can reach you!" Out of the corner of her eyes, Mia watched Oliver who was now shouting in his phone.
"No! No! Damn you! The fuck did you do that for?.......yes,....fuck yes.....I told you that I am getting married toady not because I wanted you to set the fucking reporters after me! No! Fuck! God damn you....Did I tell you to announce it to the whole world? Then why the fuck did you do that for? Huh?"
There was a momentarily silence and Mia saw the thundering rage on her husband's face and felt pity for whoever was on the receiving end of his wrath.
"You- what?....tweeted the news!" And there, he went again - raging in his phone , cursing off and on and it was at least another fifteen minutes before he returned to Mia's side.
"It's sorted! Joy is coming with a car and security to escort us. " Oliver was saying, while looking intently at his watch.
"We should have been there by now, but I suppose we could afford to delay for half an hour. "
Suddenly, Mia felt a rush of anger towards this man. A manipulative arrogant ass who blackmailed her into doing this and now she and her whole family was going to pay for it.
And here he was, saying - 'it was all sorted!' As if all this media circus and this marriage was just a small inconvenience to him and it didn't matter to him at all how her life was at the verge of destruction.
In fact Mia wondered, if it would matter to him at all, if she died right now, except that I would delay his highness the arrogant bastard for a few more hours.
"Yes, well you are going to need that security before I scratch your eyes out of your face and thurst those down your throat!" She spoke, now infuriated beyond any reason.
"Do you even realize....what had just happened? They took our pictures togather. And they are soon going to know who I am and - and then find out about Henery and Toby and by tomorrow morning, that whole shameful business would have been dugged up again and splayed wide in front of the whole world! They would loose their jobs - they have children now ....and once again the pressure would all fall on my papa's shoulders." Mia's breaths had turned shallow but she wasn't done yet.
"All because- because I met you! YOU! who doesn't care for anything or anyone as long as your own stupid secret doesn't comes out!"
She was shouting at the top of her now and people were peeking out of the offices to goggle at them but she didn't care.
"You know- I have told you a hundred times before now that I DON'T FUCKING KNOW YOUR SECRET! But you still forced me into this, blackmailed me and now my whole family is going to pay it's price. But you know something else?
Now I will do absolutely anything to find out about that bloody secret of yours and then I am going to destroy your life just like you did mine!"
She was now shivering, her hands clamped tightly togather as she looked at him incensed, daring him to say one word, but he did not. Instead she saw her own fury reflected back at her through his red eyes.
But he still said nothing, just glared at her
Like an infuriated tiger, ready to attack and then suddenly, he turned from her and stalked away with his phone, clutched tightly in his hand.
And did not show himself again until the three men in black himself arrived and escorted them through the crowing reporters outside to their car at the end of the road.
Silence, prevailed between them and sick gnawing hole settling inside Mia, realizing that within an hour after their marriage they couldn’t bear to look at each other anymore! What does it says about their future?
‘That there wasn’t going to be a future at all!’
Her stomach plummeted, below, their marriage was going to be over even before, it had properly started.
One of the uniformed security men, surrounding them stepped forward to open the door of the limo and urshered her inside.
Where another surprise in rainbow stripe suit already waiting.
Mia slid inside the car and watched the man in front of her, open mouthed. He was dark, thin and tall, wearing a ridiculous looking rainbow colored pin striped suit and an equally bright red tie, but what surprised her most that the man was openly grinning at her.
“Hello, I am Joy, Oliver’s boss.” Mia could not believe her eyes, so she blinked and looked at her husband beside her who was openly glaring at Joy.
“You are not my fucking boss! You WERE my secretary but now you are fired!” He was seething.
But Joy in his glorious suit and personality full of sunshine paid no heed to him and continued to address Mia.
“Yes, I am his secretary and his boss! You must be Mia.” He offered his hand that she shook. Oliver was now practically growling beside her. “This is not a bloody joke! You are fired you TWAT!”
“Oh no! I am not.” Joy chuckled looking at Mia’s alarmed expression. “You should know that your husband is an infuriating little dog who gets angry at silly little things and then says things that he doesn’t mean at all!”
Mia was still looking at him, surprised and when Joy raised a questioning eyebrow at her, she spoke the first thing from the top of her head. “ I am sorry, I Just didn’t expect someone like you to be….. I-I Didn’t mean it in a wrong way it’s just that…” But to her utter relief Joy was laughing.
“I get it darling, you expected a straight, boring guy in a grey dull suit. Instead here I am, Colorful, interesting and very gay!” Mia couldn’t help but chuckle alongside him.
“By the way congratulations on your nuptials and welcome to the family.”
“Thank you! Nice meeting you too Joy!” Mia tried smiling at him, but failed utterly because she knew she wasn’t going to be a part of that said family for much longer, anyway.
“Well, you wouldn’t believe how many arguments I had with your man in these last two days to plan a proper Newzealandn wedding for you, but no matter what I said – he just didn’t listen and married you anyway hidden away in a dingy little registrar’s office.” He tusked. “But what’s more, he didn’t even invite me! Anyway, I hope that you enjoy your honeymoon now. I hear the weather in Switzerland is fabulous right now.”
“Oh no!” Mia shook her head. “we are not going to honeymoon – er are- “ But something on her husband’s chilling expression stopped her mid way who was now glaring at Joy again, with murder in his eyes.
“Do you want to tell her anything else Joy? Anything, more damning? Just to make sure that she divorces me right now?” He growled. “You know just because of your stupid tweet, in which you “accidently” announced it to the whole world that I am getting married and set the whole media frenzy after us, she was angry enough to leave me!”
And for the first time in all this while Joy’s smile faltered and he looked stricken. “Oh! I-I am really sorry…” he apologized to Mia. “I had no idea – really that you didn’t want the news came out. I sincerely apologize…”
But Mia wasn’t listening to him, instead she was glancing intently over at her husband. ‘Had he really arranged for their honeymoon at Switzerland?’
If so, why? And he was looking really angry just now. ‘Was that because – he had thought Mia was going to divorce him after her brother’s case comes out?’
She felt her heart flutter high, oblivious to the blubbering apologies of Joy while she continued to admire the handsome profile of her husband.
‘Does this mean that there was hope?’
