(Freya's POV).
For some reason, I felt uneasy after Devan left my house. He said that he would update me as soon as possible, but he didn't text or call me. And I didn't dare do it either, because I didn't want Devan to think that I was giving him a chance.
But still, I felt worried that something might be happening at his house. For the first time in four years, you hear Aiden's name again. I missed him and I wondered what he was like now.
When Adam woke up and realized Devan was gone, he burst into tears. I explained what had happened just as Devan had asked and just then, Adam stopped crying.
"Mom, when will Dev be here again?" Adam asked.
We were having breakfast together before I dropped him off at school.
"I don't know, Adam. Didn't I tell you that Devan is very busy?" I sighed. "Don't ask him to sleep over at our house too often."
"Why? He's very nice to me."
"Adam. He's not our family. It's better if you play with Tristan," I said.
"But I like Dev better than Uncle Tristan...." He looked down languidly.
I blinked my eyes. I didn't know what else to tell him. But he would be sad if I kept forcing him not to meet Devan.
At that moment, I got a call from Jason. Why was he calling me so early?
"Hello?"
"Vivian, it's me, Jason," he said.
"Yes, I know. What are you calling me about this early in the morning?" I asked with a furrowed brow.
"It's about Devan."
"Devan? What's wrong with him?"
"He had an accident and now he's hospitalized."
I gasped in shock. I reflexively stood up from my chair.
"Wh-What do you mean?" My hands trembled clutching my cell phone. I was trying to stay calm, but I couldn't. I was anxious, I was scared, I was worried. My head was heavy with negative thoughts about Devan's current state.
"I'll explain when you're at the hospital."
"I'll be there. I'll be there right now," I said. I immediately ended our phone call and looked at Adam.
Oh my God... Adam would be so sad if he knew Devan was in the hospital.
"Mom, what's wrong?" Adam stood up and looked at me with his eyes dimmed.
"Oh, nothing. Just a work issue," I lied. "Sweetheart, have you finished eating? I have to rush off, so can you finish your meal?" I asked him.
"I'm done eating, Mom."
"Good. Come on. I'll walk you to school," I said.
I tried to calm myself down on the way to school and the hospital. Both my hands were shaking. I even almost hit a pedestrian when I was caught off guard by daydreaming.
I kept clutching my chest, which kept rumbling with worry and fear. Arriving at the hospital, I went straight to the hospitalization room that Jason had told me about.
"Jason," I called out to him who was sitting in the hallway.
"Vivian." He stood up to greet me.
"What's going on? He was just at my house last night. How did he get into an accident?" I told him.
"The police took care of it."
"The police?" I furrowed my brow.
He nodded. "The police are checking the accident area. We got word from the hospital that last night, Devan had an accident. A truck crashed into his car."
"T-Truck?" my hands trembled as I covered my mouth. I almost faltered, but I felt Jason holding me steady.
"Vivian."
"T-Then how is he now?" I could feel my eyes heating up, wanting to cry. My throat felt constricted. My body was shaking with fear.
"He's still unconscious. His family is inside waiting for him."
I cried. I fell to the floor sobbing.
"Vivian!" I heard Jason scream and kneel in front of me. He held me with a worried look on his face. "Vivain, are you okay?" his hand touched my arm.
"This is my fault. It's all my fault," I said.
I should have been more assertive in telling Devan to get out of my life. Even after all the terror that happened to me, I knew this was bound to happen. But I stupidly ignored it like it was no big deal. And now, Devan is lying in the hospital because of me.
"Vivian, what do you mean?"
"He got hurt because of me. I should have told him to stay away from me. I... I shouldn't have let him near me." I was hysterical. My vision blurred as my tears continued to flow. My chest felt so tight that I had trouble breathing.
"Hey, no. It's not your fault. Devan didn't get hurt because of you." I felt Jason hug me.
I shook my head. Trembling in Jason's arms. "He warned me. He was going to hurt Devan if I didn't stay away from him, but... but...."
"Vivian, no. That asshole was wrong. You didn't do anything," he said, "don't worry. Devan is fine. He's just not awake yet," he said soothingly.
But I can't think straight. I was afraid of something worse happening to Devan again. It wasn't just a threat, but he did it, hurt Devan. And I was afraid that other people close to me would also be hurt by that man.
"Everything will be fine. Devan and I are trying to catch that bastard. So you just take it easy," Jason told me. I felt him rubbing my back, trying to calm me down. "Stand up, we'll sit upstairs," he said.
He helped me up and let me sit on the lounger. He knelt in front of me, wiping away my tears with his fingers.
"Calm down, don't cry anymore," he said in a soft voice.
I felt a sense of deja vu. This situation, I had experienced it in the past. When I was in trouble, Jason was the first person to stand by me. Comforting me, keeping me company, and making sure I was okay.
Whether it was then or now, his attitude was always the same.
"I'm sure he'll wake up soon. Don't think anything strange, hm?"
I nodded. My hands were still shaking and I couldn't say anything because I kept sobbing while Jason's hands were busy wiping my tears.
I heard the door open and I looked to the side as I saw Aiden coming out of Devan's hospital room.
"Freya?"
