Chapter 42--Taking Charge

AMBER.

I slowly open my eyes, blinking against the soft morning light that filters through the sheer curtains. As consciousness returns, I find myself lying in a plush, king-sized bed, draped in the most exquisite white sheets I’ve ever seen. Confusion washes over me as I take in my surroundings, realizing that this is not my room, not my bed.

The room is a masterpiece of luxury and opulence. The walls are adorned with intricately patterned wallpaper, a subtle blend of cream and gold that lends an air of elegance to the space. A crystal chandelier hangs from the ceiling, casting a soft glow over the room like shimmering stars. Its prismatic reflections dance across the room, creating a magical ambiance.

A plush, beige carpet stretches across the floor, cushioning my bare feet as I gingerly swing them over the side of the bed. The carpet leads to an ornate wooden vanity adorned with an array of sparkling perfumes and delicate jewelry. The mirror above reflects my bewildered expression, highlighting the slight worry lines forming on my forehead.

To my left, floor-to-ceiling windows offer a breathtaking view of manicured gardens and a sparkling pool. The morning sun casts a golden hue on the surrounding trees, making them appear ethereal and otherworldly. The distant sound of birds chirping adds to the surreal atmosphere, as if I’ve stumbled into a dream.

Where am I?

And then, it comes to me, almost immediately. I am in the Holdens' mansion. I let out an exasperated sigh as the memories of last night flood my mind. A wave of uneasiness crashes over me as I stand in the large bedroom, feeling out of place, like bronze in the midst of gold.

As I stand up from the unbelievably soft bed, the silk robe that’s been carefully placed at the foot of the bed catches my attention. Its delicate texture whispers promises of comfort and warmth. Shaking off the uneasiness, I wrap the robe around me, allowing the soft fabric to embrace me like a security blanket.

The fact that I am here does not sit right with me. I want to be back at the hotel room...with Ryan. But if I want to do that, then I need to find him first.

I walk up to the door and crack it open, before stepping out of the luxurious room. I’m eager to find Ryan, as soon as possible, But as I stand in the corridor, I realize I have no idea where his room is located. The sprawling mansion stretches out before me, its hallways branching off like a labyrinth. I bite my lip, my gaze flickering down the hallways, unsure of which path to take.

Driven by the desire to find him, I start wandering through the mansion, my footsteps muffled by the plush carpet beneath me. The grandeur of the place becomes even more apparent as I explore. Gilded mirrors reflect my image, their ornate frames shimmering in the ambient light. The air carries a faint scent of polished wood and fresh flowers, adding to the sense of refined elegance that permeates the mansion.

As I navigate the corridors, I catch glimpses of opulent sitting rooms, each adorned with antique furniture and exquisite artwork. A sweeping staircase beckons me, and I climb its marble steps, taking in the intricate carvings and the sweeping banister that seems to spiral into infinity.

My aimless exploration leads me to a pair of large double doors. The scent of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries wafts towards me, drawing me closer. I push the doors open and find myself standing at the threshold of the mansion’s elegant dining room.

Seated at a long mahogany table, I see Mrs. Holden, looking as regal as ever.

Beside Mrs. Holden, my eyes lock onto a woman who is undeniably beautiful. Her flawless features seem sculpted by angels, her blonde hair cascading down in silky waves. She wears an exquisite gown, its fabric shimmering with every movement, as if sprinkled with stardust. The dress hugs her curves in all the right places, accentuating her grace and allure. Her jewelry gleams with diamonds and precious gems, each piece a testament to her opulence.

But what catches my attention, and twists my insides with a pang of discomfort, is the fact that she is seated right beside Ryan. They share a casual familiarity that implies a closeness that I have yet to experience with him.

But did I really have any right feel angry? Ryan and I are not even a think. Despite knowing that fact, I cannot stop the feeling of jealousy from gnawing at my insides.

My eyes flicker from Mrs Holden, to the beautiful woman, and to Ryan. The scene before me is enough evidence that I truly did not belong here. As much as I hate to admit it, Ryan looks very good, seated beside the lady.

The perfect couple, exactly what his family wants.

I turn, eager to run away from the hall, but I hear my name, and that forces me to stop dead in my tracks.

“Amber, darling! Why are you just standing there? please join us for breakfast,” she says, her tone sugary sweet.

I hesitate, momentarily taken aback by her unexpected invitation. Why is she inviting me when she clearly hates my guts?

The tension in the room becomes palpable, as if the air itself thickens with judgment. Ryan’s head snaps back, his eyes widening as if caught in the act of some unspeakable transgression.

Mrs. Holden gestures to the empty seat beside her, her gestures both inviting and calculated. “Sit, sit,” she insists, her voice a delicate veil of politeness masking her true thoughts.

I slide into the seat, the contrast between my modest attire and the surrounding opulence making me acutely aware of my own perceived inadequacy. The scent of freshly brewed coffee fills my nostrils, mixing with the bitter taste of insecurity in my mouth.

Ryan, sitting across from me, avoids direct eye contact, his focus shifting uncomfortably between his plate and his mother’s gaze. It’s as if my mere presence fills him with discomfort.

I bite my lower lip as I fight the urge to stop them from trembling. What in the world is happening? I'd slept on cloud nine, feeling extremely excited for today. This is so not how I expected it to look like. With some woman looking like she's going to take my place in Ryan's life. I don't like this one bit.

Mrs. Holden gracefully turns her attention towards the striking woman seated beside Ryan, her voice dripping with veiled satisfaction. “Emily, dear, I must say it’s wonderful to have you here today. I can’t remember the last time I saw you. Perhaps it was when you were still a child! Oh, how close you and Ryan were growing up. Such dear childhood friends, weren’t you?”

Emily, as her name is revealed, offers a polite smile, her eyes flickering briefly in my direction before focusing back on Mrs. Holden. “Yes, we go way back,” she responds, her tone laced with a subtle arrogance. “Ryan and I practically lived at each other’s houses. It’s been ages since we’ve caught up, though.”

Mrs. Holden nods, her words carefully calculated to undermine any sense of security I may have had. “Ah, yes, it must be wonderful to reconnect after all these years. I’m sure you two have much to discuss. And speaking of plans, dear Amber, did you know that Ryan and Emily have been eagerly looking forward to their dinner date at Le Monde? It’s such a renowned restaurant.”

A jolt of realization shoots through me, and I suddenly understand Mrs. Holden’s intentions. She is trying to crush and toy with my feelings, fixing dates and whatnot.

I'm not going to let her do this to me. Or anyone. If Ryan's not going to say a word, I will, and it is completely fine. He's been fighting for us for so long. It's about time I do something too. As if moved by an unseen force, I stand from my chair, smiling sweetly at Mrs. Holden.

I feel everyone's gaze on me as I step around the table and grab the empty chair beside Ryan's mother. It squeaks against the ground loudly, but I have little care in the world to let myself feel embarrassed by any of this. I wedge my chair between Ryan and Emily's hard enough that the woman gasps, slipping out of her seat to let me finish.

"What..." she starts to say but I wave her off sweetly.

"Oh. It isn't you. You must not know since you are meeting after such a long time. Ryan prefers to eat with family. Speaking of which" —I pause, bending over to plant a kiss on Ryan's face— "I'll go get Ash."

He nods and as I turn, I can swear that he is trying not to laugh at his mother and Emily.
