Fake People, Fake Feelings
"Abigail, let me e-explain, p-plea-"
I didn't finish him and just slapped him, slapping him for believing he loved me enough to marry me.
My entire life, I believe, has been a series of lies. Who is truly loyal to me? Was David aware of this?
Despite my inability to stand, I persisted. I want to get out of here! I was having trouble breathing as if I couldn't breathe.
I was about to walk away when Jacob grabbed my arm and pulled me back.
"Let me explain," Jacob began, "I love you so much that I married you— there are only a few people who truly want to—" Jacob paused, staring at the bedroom door.
When I turned around, I saw David and our friends, and when David saw me, he dashed over to me and grabbed my hand.
Catherine did not understand what was happening but she still approached Jacob.
"What the hell is going on here?!!" This is the voice I don't want to hear right now; Madame Emilia is the one. "It's you again, Abigail?! You've done nothing but spend the day with ruining our mood!" She pointed her finger at me, "At least I won't be surprised, you're a child-"
"Grandma! Enough!" Jacob yelled, cutting Madame Emilia off in her tracks.
"Why would I?! He's just a bastard! Doesn't she still know?! That Catherine is the real daughter of the Lopez’s?! And why would you hide that fake marriage?!" She glared at Jacob, I can hardly understand what is happening, am I not their real child? Madame Emilia turned to me, "It wasn't you who did that! It was Abigail's own parents!" As she said this she was still looking at me as if disgusted.
"I said enough!" Jacob's yell was the reason Callie cried without us realizing she was already in the room.
Chad picked her up and Chad tapped Travis on the shoulder so they went down with Callie.
"I don't know why you did this to Abigail; I was confident to leave Abigail with you when I left to take care of our business; I didn't know you were a coward and followed whoever you followed!" David raged.
I clutched his hand tightly, knowing that this is exactly what I needed right now. I can't defend myself right now because I don't know how to speak.
I turned to Catherine, who was just behind Jacob and was just staring at us as if she wanted to talk but didn't know where to start.
"For answering your question, David. You don't know what is the truth! You don't know where it all started!" Jacob looked at me, "and for you, Abigail. I loved you so much, to the point that I accepted your parents' offer for me just to be mine." He took a deep breath, "but when I found out your parents were behind my parents' death, that's when I felt angry that I wish I hadn't forced the marriage. But believe me, my feelings for you haven't changed! Until now I still hope that you will still love me." Jacob's explanation.
"Liar! Do you think I'll believe you after you've done everything I don't deserve?! Fuck you!" I yelled angrily, raising my middle finger at him.
"D-Do you k-know that you had an accident with Jacob, Abi?" We all looked at Catherine.
Accident? Me? With Jacob?!
My forehead furrowed, "Is this another lie?"
"I-I hope this is just a lie, but it's proven now that you don't remember such things." She approached me, "I'm really sorry if I hurt you before, it's because of my jealousy. I love Jacob but he wants you, you are the one he chose despite the consequences that can happen.”
When she said that I frowned even more, "are you fucking insane?! I won't believe you anymore because of all of you," I looked at the three of them. "You're all liars!"
I couldn't, so I pulled David out of that house.
There was always something bad going on when I’m in that house.
Whether or not what they say is true, I can't accept it right now.
I saw Chad, Travis, and Callie sitting in the living room, but I didn't pay any attention to them either, Callie called me mima and I didn't look back.
My life's despair, it was as if I were born just to experience this sadness. They had to hurt me like this because it was written in my name.
When David and I finally got out and he opened the door of his car, I immediately got on.
I even looked at my hand still holding the paper of our marriage contract labeled Not Valid.
I just laughed suddenly, how come I didn't even look for our marriage contract before?
I suppose it's also my fault that I'm having these experiences because I don't know much and pick things up quickly.
I felt David hold my hand which is why I turned my gaze to him, "where do you want to go?" He asked me, how can he manage to ask me where I want to go after what happened a while ago?
But I thought about what he said, why would he ask me where I wanted to go when he knew I was tired and he knew I was no longer in the mood and I just wanted to lock myself in our mansion.
But he asked me because he wanted me to have peace of mind by going to the people I need to answer all my questions inside my mind and heart. He asked me because he wanted to enlighten my heart.
"Let's go see dad and mom, I want to go to them," I told him with all my might.
This is probably the right time for me to know the truth.
I can’t just be a coward all the time and always rely on David’s strength.
I can't keep my mouth shut and just let people help me.
Now, hopefully, after this day I have peace of mind.
David did not speak again, he started the car and we left.
He grabbed my left hand and squeezed it.
This is probably his way of making me feel that he is only here for me, that he is just around me no matter what happens.
I didn’t turn to him or anything because I was looking straight at the road to our house.
Where I grew up.
My whole life has been a lie, how can they say I’ve been in an accident and I also have memories that I can't remember?
I was suddenly sad, because what Catherine said if it's true that I'm not really a child of the Lopez’s, it also seems true because I didn't feel like they were my parents. Whenever I need them they are gone.
So it seems like the reason why they really don’t exist for me has also been answered.
I smiled bitterly and I couldn't stop myself from crying.
I am deeply hurt by what is happening, and I am aware of it. I thought I would be happy.
Still not, how many more problems can I have to be brave?
~
"Hon?" David called me and even stroked my cheek, "here we are at your mansion."
I fell asleep, when I peeked outside he was right.
The color of our mansion is still the same as if the sadness of the aura of our mansion is still the same as before.
I got out of the car, "hon? I'll just wait here in the car, I won't go with you inside so that you can talk properly. Call me if you need me. I'm just here, be brave." David said to me.
I gave him a bitter smile and nodded, then I turned my back on him to go straight to our gate.
What if I didn’t have David in my life.
Our old maid saw me right away so she immediately opened the gate.
"Madame Abi! You just came here again!" She greeted me and even gave me her sweet smile.
I couldn't bring her that smile back so I just smiled at her bitterly, "where are mom and dad?" I asked her.
It seemed like it actually happened in my dream not just once, but twice.
I thought it was just a dream, but it followed me to real life.
"Uh– they're in the garden-" I didn't finish her and I went straight to the garden of our mansion.
I caught my mom removing dead leaves.
"Mom?" I called her, daddy and I turned around at the same time.
You can see the shock on their faces, instead of their excited and happy faces.
Now, this adds to my feeling that Catherine and Madame Emilia are right.
"A-Abigail?" Mom called me. She approached me immediately as well as dad. "Why did you go here this late? It's afternoon, who's with you?" She even looked behind me to see if anyone had followed me, "why didn't you say you were coming?"
"I want to surprise you, why don't you seem happy?"
I could see the shock on their faces at what I said.
I know they will sense the awkwardness in my tone of voice because I have always respected them, and now I feel superior to them when I speak.
"W-What? What I mean is, why didn't you say you were going here right now so I could get you a snacks." Her voice was sad.
