The Adopted One
Fiona
“We are here to pay respect to your Grandma,” Mother said, wiping her eyes and sniffling, and there were the two people I least expected, well, one person, giving Mrs Anderson had come with us, I suspected, he would be around also, but Emma? This bitch is still pestering around?
“She has no ties with my Grandmother,” Emma stated with so much disdain. What is she talking about now? And what does mother mean by Grandmother? I have no Grandmother, yes I’m not close with my father’s people, but then he’s long gone and Mother never mentioned anything about the the family on that side, and the last time I recall her own mother was dead, Grandfather on the other hand wasn’t do so well with his liver problem either, that concludes our family, so where did the extra come from?
“Mum, what are you doing here?” I asked softly. It would be bad for me to slap the bitch, my mother would be disappointed in me, and Liam wouldn’t even let me get an inch closer to her before he embarrasses me.
Mother blinks a little more than usual. And the bitch chuckled.
“You haven’t even told your daughter, why? Still ashamed? Still in denial? I don’t care about you anymore, so get yourself out of my life. I don’t want to ever see you again.”
“Hey, don’t you dare talk to my mother that way!” I finally scolded the bitch tired of her spewing nonsense. But Mother grips my arm, shaking her head.
“Mum?”
“Emma is my daughter, she’s your sister Fiona.”
I felt something heavy crash on me. What were the odds when they were saying she looked like my mother, but I was certain they would never relate, but the fact that I could believe immediately proved what a side of me already suspected.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Mum.” I chuckled.
“Do you know who she is? She’s a nobody, a gold–”
“Enough!” Mother yelled. My eyes widened, and I felt like the smallest in the room. Mother never yelled at me; she would caution me, ground me, but never yelled. I was her treasure, her only child.
“You don’t get to talk about your sister that way.”
“Sister,” The bitch scoffed, and I immediately turned to her. It must be funny to her to snatch everything I own.
“I gave birth to her, and I ran away because my parents threatened to take her away from me if I didn’t marry whom they wanted.” Mother sniffled. I didn’t know if she was crying or not. I was too busy glaring at the bitch, facing the other side, avoiding my mother’s gaze. Liam was a blur also, as I calculated the different things I could do to her right now; drag my nails along her face, and gift her a lasting mark, I would have stabbed her if I had a knife anywhere around me. I had had enough of her taking what was mine.
“I just wanted to protect you.” Mother continued, and the bitch scoffed again.
“Protect? Fine, sorry for coming as the daughter of a poor, violent man, and thank you for protecting me,” She said with loud sarcasm, but her mother wasn't ready to give up.
“Emma,” Mother took a step forward, while the bitch glared at her, warning her not to get any closer. I stared back at Mum, finding her pleading expression annoying.
“You have a daughter, you have your family. So please leave my wretched one. I don’t even have a family anymore, so you might as well-”
“Wilson is still alive, he did this, he killed Granny, and he’s haunting after you.” I watched as Emma became interested, and this time I had to do something.
“Don’t you think I also deserve to receive an explanation?” I cut in before Emma could speak and prolonged this conversation. Finally, Mother turned to me with a somewhat worried look on her face, but given how she had been staring at Emma, it was different.
“Fiona, you have to be more understanding now, Emma is–”
“Why?!” I burst out in tears. “Why do I have to be the one always understanding? She’s taken everything from me, and now she’s taking you.”
“Fiona, don’t say that.” Mother strokes both of my arms, holding me up to look at her. She was giving me the attention I wanted, and I took a little glance at Emma, but she wasn’t as pissed as I wanted her to be.
“See? Take care of your daughter and try not to repeat your past mistakes. Let’s go, Liam.” Emma stated and began to walk out.
“Wait, I’ll leave instead, I’m sure you need to go back to rest.” Mother had pulled her hand away, once more leaving me without a care in the world.
“I have to prepare for Grandmother’s funeral. I hope not to see you there.” Then she walked away. Such a brat, who does she think she is to speak to my mum that way? Mother was about to follow behind her, but I held her back.
“Don’t you think this is unfair? Because I’m the adopted one? Now that you have found your daughter, you plan to dump me, don’t you?”
“Fiona, don’t make this difficult. I still love you the same.” Liar, they are all liars; they will leave me in the trash soon, I know that. I shook my head with tears blurring my vision and ran out. The worst part was, she didn’t even call me back.
“And so I called the one person I knew would always be there.” However, he wasn’t picking. Luckily for me, I knew about a few places he could be whenever he wasn’t answering his phone. The warehouse. It took me time to get there as I had to use a taxi; however, when I got there, Peter wasn’t around.
So I informed the worker that I’ll wait for him in the office. I wasn’t prepared for anything. I wasn’t in search for anything, I just looked around until my eyes dropped on a particular file lying on his desk with the familiar passport on display. The bitch also has ties with Peter. Fine, since everyone wants her so bad, let them all go down with her.
Starting with Peter, he should be ready to say goodbye to this warehouse and his illegal business.
