Chapter 81
The day appeared to stretch endlessly with a strange lethargy while Roseline sat in the living room, her thoughts swirling. She had stashed the pregnancy test far back in her drawer, concealed beneath discarded papers and unused supplies, a reminder that she must not allow her secret to escape. Any time Ronaldo was absent was an opportunity for her to plan her next step.
Roseline fiddled with the corners of a battered magazine, her fingers shaking a bit as she flipped through the pages with a lack of interest. She had to maintain the façade, to assure Ronaldo that everything was fine, that nothing was different. The last thing she wanted was for him to begin scrutinizing her every action and doubting her motives.
Ronaldo walked into the room with his usual unsettling elegance, his gaze inspecting her with a blend of distrust and annoyance. “You appear as though you've encountered a spectre,” he remarked, his tone tinged with a touch of accusation.
“I’m simply weary,” Roseline responded with a faint smile, concealing the deep-seated anxiety that twisted in her stomach. "The infant has been making it hard for me to sleep at night."
Ronaldo took a moment to respond, his eyes lingering just a bit longer than needed before he nodded gradually. "Feeling stressed, are you?" He grabbed a glass of water from the side table and took a lengthy drink, watching her from above the rim. "I continue to believe there are additional factors involved beyond just stress." "You're concealing something."
Roseline gulped nervously, her heart racing. She had to keep him away, to stop him from connecting the dots. "I already informed you," she stated calmly, "I’m okay." "Simply require some rest."
Ronaldo examined her for a brief moment more, his lips pressed together as if choosing his next words thoughtfully. "I don’t believe it, Roseline." I believe there is additional depth to it. “Are you dating anyone?” The question lingered, heavy with meaning.
Roseline let out a laugh, casually shrugging her shoulders. “Let’s go, Ronaldo." What time would I even have for that? "I’m trapped here with you for the entire day."
He didn’t seem persuaded. "Perhaps you’re covertly plotting against me," he pondered, narrowing his eyes as he searched her face for any indication of honesty. "It’s possible that Sam is affecting you in some way." Perhaps he's filling your mind with foolishness.
Roseline felt her heart constrict upon hearing Sam's name. She couldn’t allow Ronaldo to affect him, and couldn’t take the chance of him turning against Sam due to misguided jealousy or rage. “Ronaldo, please,” she pleaded, her tone more earnest than she meant. “You're acting overly suspicious.” Sam is merely a friend. “Nothing else.”
Ronaldo's lips pressed together into a narrow line, his fingers drumming steadily on the table's edge. "Friends don’t cause a person to behave this way," he noted. "You’re dodging me, you’re concealing things, you’re always anxious." "Something is happening, and I plan to discover what it is."
Roseline's thoughts raced, seeking another excuse, another diversion. She couldn't permit him to investigate further. "Perhaps I’m simply anxious about the baby," she remarked, her voice quaking. "Perhaps I'm afraid of introducing a child into this environment."
Ronaldo's demeanour relaxed a bit, yet the doubt in his eyes persisted. "You should sort it out quickly, Roseline," he said softly. "Since I won't put up with you lurking behind my back."
As he began to exit the room, Roseline released a breath she hadn’t noticed she was holding. The atmosphere was heavy, a persistent reminder that each word she uttered, every action she took, was being watched closely. She needed to discover a means to safeguard both herself and the baby, yet every route appeared filled with peril.
Later that night, while resting in bed, Roseline was consumed by anxiety. She realized she wouldn’t be able to maintain the facade for much longer. Ronaldo’s increasing paranoia was a ticking time bomb, poised to detonate at any instant. If he were to discover the baby and Sam’s role in it, all she had fought so hard to safeguard would fall apart. She required a strategy, an escape route. However, the stakes had escalated to an unprecedented level.
When her phone vibrated with a text from Sam, Roseline's heart tightened with a blend of fear and relief. “How are you doing?” he inquired, his worry clear in his tone.
“I’m managing,” she answered curtly, her thumbs poised above the screen. "Ronaldo is declining." "I'm unsure how much longer I can sustain this."
Sam responded almost immediately. “We’ll work it out.” Simply stay focused for the time being. "I'll get there as quickly as possible."
Roseline gazed at the screen, a glimmer of hope amidst her increasing anxiety. However, time was running out, and she realized they could not handle any further hold-ups. She had to move quickly to find a way to reverse the situation before Ronaldo took any drastic action.
While placing the phone down, Roseline's eyes moved toward the window. The outside night was dark and quiet, serving as ideal concealment for an escape. However, she understood that even the tiniest error could jeopardize everything she had. She needed to be cautious and deliberate—one misstep and she might find herself stuck for good.
Taking a deep breath, Roseline shut her eyes and gave herself a brief moment of relaxation. She possessed a strategy, a delicate optimism. Now she merely required the bravery to follow it to the end.
