Magnus's gaze lowered slightly. He wasn't wrong.
After the car accident, his legs had been injured, but not to the extent of being crippled. He had faked it deliberately-to make the old man feel guilty, to show him what it was like to lose control.
He was the eldest grandson of the Voss family. His father had died young, caught in a revenge killing. His mother, unable to bear the loss, chose to end her life by jumping into the sea, leaving him behind. Devastated, the old man pinned all his hopes on Magnus, raising him with an iron hand, demanding perfection. And he delivered, becoming the ideal heir-until Senna appeared.
Senna's mother had been divorced by the Thorne family for alleged infidelity. A daughter born of such a woman was nothing but a disgrace in the old man's eyes. He couldn't tolerate her ruining the successor he had spent decades grooming. And when Matthias died, it became the spark that ignited the tragedy.
In this moment of life and death, memories of fleeting happiness flashed through Magnus's mind.
A girl had once crept up behind him, covering his eyes with her soft hands, playfully reminding him not to work too long or his eyes would get tired and sick.
Whenever he came home exhausted, she would make him different kinds of desserts, saying that sweets could bring happiness. Ever since he lost his parents, he had never truly felt joy.
He never liked sweets, but every time, he finished whatever she made-just to see that radiant smile he had never known himself.
No matter how tired or overwhelmed he was, as long as she was there, sitting quietly by his side, it was enough.
He had spent his whole life striving to meet his grandfather's expectations, never living for himself. Until Senna came along and made him realize-he was still a man of flesh and blood.
But why was he so cruel? Why did he have to destroy even the last shred of purity in his heart?
When he let go of the steering wheel that day, he thought he would follow Senna in death. Yet, against all odds, he survived. To punish himself-and to punish the old man-he refused to stand up again. He had the doctor keep his secret.
The events of that year left him in pain for three long years. He lived like a walking corpse-until she reappeared. The moment he saw her again, he knew. She had returned. He never doubted it. When you love someone deeply, you can recognize them even if they turn to ashes. Let alone a mere fake tear mole.
Time passed, second by second, and the air grew heavier with tension. Maxime, exhausted, had fallen asleep on Caiuss's shoulder. Caiuss coaxed him, saying that when he woke up, he would see his mother. Only then did the boy sleep peacefully.
"I'll take him home to rest. Keep me informed if there's any news," Caiuss said, worried the child might catch a chill at the hospital.
Magnus watched as Caiuss carried the child away. It took everything in him to restrain himself from rushing forward and taking his son back. That child was the eldest grandson of the Voss family-he should be living in Rosewood Manor.
'Maxime, I'm sorry. Once your mother recovers, I will make it up to you. My son...' Magnus clenched his fists tightly, his eyes filled with reluctance as he shut them.
"Mr. Voss." Edric approached, his expression full of concern. He feared history would repeat itself.
Magnus slowly opened his sorrow-filled eyes.
"Sir" Edric said hesitantly. "Three years ago, Young Madam survived. She'll get through this again. Please don't worry too much."
"She'll make it. She has to," Magnus said hoarsely, his voice low and strained as his fists tightened.
After a moment's hesitation, Edric reported, "Sir, Astrid has escaped. I suspect the old man had a hand in it..."
Magnus's deep black eyes, cold as a frozen abyss, flared with murderous intent. "No one can save her. I want her dead."
She had made the ultimate mistake-touching Senna. If he let her live, he wouldn't be a man.
"What about the old man...?" Edric understood his rage, but he also didn't want to see grandfather and grandson completely torn apart over a woman.
Magnus's handsome face remained dark as he sneered. "Tell the old man to hand her over. If he does, he'll gain a two-year-old great-grandson. Otherwise, I'll change my last name to Thorne and sever all ties with the Voss family."
Edric trembled at his words. "Sir, you can't be serious." The old man's greatest concern was him!
"Tell him that for the rest of my life, I will only live for myself," Magnus said, his gaze fixed on the operating room doors. He said no more.
Edric glanced at his straight, unwavering back, let out a quiet sigh, and turned to leave.
