Chapter 74: Arrival at Pine Summit Resort
Chapter 74: Arrival at Pine Summit Resort
The welcome dinner started at seven o'clock in the resort's main dining hall. Laura stood in front of her bedroom mirror, second-guessing her outfit choice for the third time. The invitation had said casual, but she wasn't sure what casual meant in a luxury resort context.
She'd settled on dark jeans and a soft blue sweater that Jane had once said made her eyes look striking. Not that she was trying to look striking for anyone. She was just trying to look professional enough for a company function without seeming like she was trying too hard.
A knock on her bedroom door made her jump.
"Laura? We should probably head down soon," Leonard's voice came through the door.
"I'll be ready in five minutes," Laura called back.
She applied minimal makeup, pulled her hair into a loose style that looked effortless but had taken fifteen minutes to achieve, and took a deep breath before opening her door.
Leonard stood in the living area, and Laura's breath caught when she saw him. He'd changed into dark jeans and a charcoal sweater that emphasized his broad shoulders. His hair was still damp from the shower, falling across his forehead in a way that made him look younger and less intimidating than his usual office appearance.
"You look nice," Leonard said, his eyes lingering on her face longer than strictly necessary.
"So do you," Laura replied, then immediately felt awkward for admitting it.
They walked to the dining hall in silence, the mountain air cool against Laura's skin. Other employees streamed toward the main building, and Laura noticed several people watching as she and Leonard arrived together.
The dining hall had been transformed for the welcome dinner. Round tables filled the space, each set for eight with elegant place settings and centerpieces made from local wildflowers. Warm lighting created an intimate atmosphere that felt more like a wedding reception than a corporate function.
"Laura! Over here!" Jane waved from a table near the windows, where she'd saved seats beside her.
Laura made her way over with relief, grateful to have Jane as a buffer. Leonard followed, and Laura noticed Nathan had also saved a seat at their table, along with Sarah from Marketing, David from Finance, and two junior analysts whose names Laura couldn't quite remember.
"This place is incredible," Jane said as they settled in. "I already checked out the spa. They have a hot stone massage package that I'm absolutely booking tomorrow."
"There's also a hiking trail system if anyone's interested," David added. "I saw maps in the main lodge. Some of the trails look challenging but worth it for the views."
Dinner service began with a toast from Vincent Conti, who stood at the front of the room with Maria beside him.
"I want to thank everyone for your dedication to Conti Corporation this past year," Vincent said, his voice carrying across the room. "We've faced significant challenges, the Sterling lawsuit, market changes, expansion into new territories. But we've not just survived these challenges, we've thrived because of the talent and commitment of people like all of you."
Applause rippled through the room. Vincent waited for it to fade before continuing.
"This week is about celebrating our victories and reconnecting as a team. So please, enjoy the resort, participate in the activities, and take time to appreciate what we've built together."
More applause, then the servers began bringing out the first course. Laura found herself seated between Jane and Leonard, hyperaware of Leonard's presence beside her despite trying to focus on the general conversation at the table.
"Laura, we haven't properly celebrated your courtroom victory yet," Sarah said from across the table. "That was absolutely brilliant how you exposed Sterling's fraud."
"It was a team effort," Laura replied, uncomfortable being the center of attention. "Leonard and the legal team did most of the work."
"That's not true," Leonard interjected. "Laura built the entire defense strategy. I just helped present it."
Their eyes met across the breadbasket, and Laura felt heat rise in her cheeks at the obvious admiration in Leonard's tone.
"You two work well together," Nathan observed with what seemed like studied casualness. "The collaboration was impressive to watch."
Jane kicked Laura under the table, clearly enjoying the awkwardness. Laura shot her friend a warning look that Jane ignored.
Wine flowed freely as dinner progressed through multiple courses. The atmosphere relaxed, with conversations growing louder and more animated as people unwound from months of workplace stress. Laura found herself laughing at David's terrible jokes and contributing to a debate about the best hiking trails in the region.
Halfway through the main course, Vincent appeared at their table with a champagne bottle.
"A special toast," Vincent announced, gesturing for everyone's attention. "To Laura Robin, whose brilliant legal defense not only saved our company but strengthened our reputation throughout the industry."
The entire dining hall turned toward Laura as Vincent poured champagne into everyone's glass at her table. Laura felt her face burning as colleagues applauded and raised their glasses.
"To Laura!" people called out from various tables.
Laura raised her own glass awkwardly, wanting this attention to end. But then Leonard stood, holding his champagne flute, and the room grew quiet.
"I want to add something to my father's toast," Leonard said, his voice carrying across the hall. "When Laura first came to work for us, I'll admit I underestimated her capabilities."
Several people chuckled, and Laura's stomach clenched, wondering where Leonard was going with this.
"But over the past year, Laura has proven herself to be not just competent, but exceptional," Leonard continued. "Her analytical abilities, strategic thinking, and courage under pressure are qualities that any company would be fortunate to have. More than that, she represents the kind of innovative leadership that will drive our industry forward."
He turned to look directly at Laura, his green eyes intense with an emotion she couldn't quite name.
"Laura, you've exceeded every expectation and challenged every assumption. You're not just a valued employee, you're someone whose intelligence and character make everyone around you better. I'm grateful you chose to build your career with us, and I'm proud to work alongside you."
The room erupted in applause again, but Laura barely heard it. She was too focused on Leonard's face, on the sincerity in his expression that went beyond professional appreciation. This wasn't just a boss praising an employee, this was something more personal, delivered in front of the entire company.
Leonard sat back down as the applause faded, and Laura realized she was supposed to respond somehow. She stood on shaky legs, acutely aware that everyone was watching.
"Thank you," Laura managed. "I'm honored to be part of such a talented team. Everything I've accomplished has been because of the support and collaboration I've received from all of you."
She sat down quickly, her heart pounding. Under the table, she felt Leonard's hand briefly touch her knee, a gesture so quick she might have imagined it, but the warmth of his palm burned through the denim of her jeans.
Dinner concluded with dessert and coffee, and the staff began clearing tables to create space for mingling. A live band set up in one corner, preparing to provide music for the evening.
"Dance with me?" Jane asked Laura, pulling her toward the small area that had been cleared for dancing.
Several other employees had already begun moving to the music, and Laura let Jane pull her into the crowd, grateful for an excuse to put physical distance between herself and Leonard before she did something stupid.
"That speech," Jane said, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Laura, Leonard just declared his feelings for you in front of the entire company."
"He was just being professional," Laura protested weakly.
"Professional my ass. Did you see how he looked at you? That was a man who…"
"Jane, drop it," Laura interrupted. "We're sharing a suite for a week. Making things more complicated than they already are would be a disaster."
"Or it would be exactly what you both need," Jane countered. "Laura, when are you going to stop running from this?"
Before Laura could answer, the band shifted to a slower song, and couples began pairing up on the dance floor. Laura saw Leonard standing near the bar, watching her with an expression that made her breath catch.
He crossed the room with purposeful strides, cutting through the crowd until he stood directly in front of her.
"Dance with me," Leonard said. It wasn't quite a question.
Jane melted away before Laura could protest, leaving her alone with Leonard as the music swelled around them. Laura's mouth went dry as Leonard held out his hand, waiting.
