Chapter 67: Samantha's Farewell
Chapter 67: Samantha's Farewell
The doorbell rang at precisely seven o'clock on Thursday evening. Leonard set down the whiskey he'd been nursing and walked to his penthouse entrance, already knowing who stood on the other side. Samantha had texted earlier requesting one final conversation before her move to Washington D.C., and he owed her at least that much.
She stood in the hallway wearing a simple black dress, her auburn hair pulled back in the elegant style he'd always admired. Two suitcases waited beside her, evidence that this visit preceded her departure to the airport.
"Come in," Leonard said, stepping aside.
Samantha entered his apartment with the familiar grace that had first attracted his mother's matchmaking attention. She accepted his offer of wine and settled into the leather chair by the window, the same spot where they'd shared dozens of conversations over the past months.
"Thank you for seeing me," Samantha began, her voice carrying none of the hurt he'd expected. "I know things ended awkwardly between us, and I wanted to clear the air before starting my new position."
Leonard took the chair across from her, studying her calm expression. "You don't owe me explanations, Samantha. I'm the one who couldn't give you what you deserved."
"Actually, that's what I came to discuss." Samantha took a sip of her wine, then met his gaze directly. "Leonard, I need to be honest with you about something. I knew from very early in our relationship that your heart wasn't available. I saw it in the way you held yourself back, the distance in your eyes even during our most intimate moments."
Leonard felt surprise register on his face. "Then why did you stay?"
"Because I was using you just as much as you were using me." Samantha's admission carried no bitterness, just simple honesty. "When your mother introduced us, I had just ended an engagement. My fiancé called off our wedding three weeks before the ceremony because he'd fallen in love with someone else. I was devastated and desperate to prove I could move forward."
She set down her wine glass and leaned forward slightly. "You represented everything I thought I should want. Successful, intelligent, from a good family, appropriate in every way. I convinced myself that building something based on compatibility and mutual respect was more mature than waiting for passionate love."
"But it wasn't enough," Leonard said quietly.
"No, it wasn't. And more importantly, it wasn't fair to either of us." Samantha's brown eyes held sympathy rather than accusation. "Leonard, we both know why you couldn't connect with me on a deeper level. She's been there between us the entire time, whether you acknowledged it or not."
Leonard's jaw tightened. "Laura and I have a complicated professional relationship. That's all."
"Is it?" Samantha asked gently. "Because I saw you two together at the Morrison Industries holiday party. I watched how you communicated across a crowded room without speaking, how you both seemed hyperaware of where the other person stood, how your entire energy changed when she entered your field of vision."
Leonard looked away, unable to maintain eye contact while Samantha dissected truths he'd been avoiding.
"The way you two interact is something I've never achieved with anyone, including you," Samantha continued. "There's an intimacy in how you argue, how you challenge each other, how you seem to understand what the other is thinking before words are spoken. Leonard, that's not just professional respect or leftover chemistry. That's connection on a level most people spend their entire lives searching for."
"We have history," Leonard said weakly. "Complicated, painful history that can't be ignored."
"Of course you do. And that history obviously includes deep love alongside the pain." Samantha stood and moved to the window, looking out at the city lights. "Here's what I've learned from my own failed engagement and our relationship: fear of being hurt again will cost you more than the original heartbreak ever did."
She turned back to face him, her expression showing genuine concern. "Leonard, your fear of vulnerability is destroying your chance at genuine happiness. You've built walls so high that no one can reach you, and Laura is the only person who ever made you feel safe enough to lower them. The fact that she hurt you once doesn't mean she'll hurt you again. You're both different people now."
Leonard stood as well, his hands clenched at his sides. "You don't understand what she did to me. The betrayal…"
"I understand that you were both barely adults when whatever happened between you occurred," Samantha interrupted firmly. "I understand that four years have passed and you've both grown and changed. And I understand that you're still punishing both of you for being human and fallible."
She moved closer to him, her voice softening. "Leonard, the way you looked at her when she won that industry award? The panic in your eyes when you thought she might leave the company? The protectiveness you showed during her accident? Those aren't the actions of someone who's moved on. Those are the actions of someone who's still deeply in love but too afraid to admit it."
Leonard felt something crack inside his chest at her words. "It's too late for us. Too much has happened."
"Is it? Because from where I'm standing, the only thing standing between you and Laura is your own stubbornness." Samantha collected her purse, preparing to leave. "I'm moving to Washington because I deserve someone who can love me without reservations. But Leonard, you deserve that too. And I think Laura might be the only person who can give you that, if you're brave enough to try."
She walked to the door, then paused with her hand on the handle. Turning back, she approached Leonard one last time and kissed his cheek with genuine affection.
"Go get her before she accepts someone else's proposal out of resignation," Samantha said softly.
Leonard felt his blood run cold. "What proposal?"
"John from your maintenance department. The office gossip network has been buzzing about it for days." Samantha's expression showed sympathy for the shock on his face. "He's apparently been planning to propose for weeks. Some people think she'll say yes because she's trying to move on with someone safe and uncomplicated."
Leonard's mind raced as panic flooded his system. Laura, accepting a proposal from another man. Laura, building a life with someone else while he remained paralyzed by fear and pride.
"When?" Leonard managed to ask.
"I don't know the exact timing, but soon from what I've heard. Leonard, if you have any feelings for her at all, don't let her make a decision based on giving up on what you two could have." Samantha opened the door, her suitcases waiting in the hallway. "Good luck with everything. I hope you find the courage to take the risk."
The door closed behind her, leaving Leonard standing alone in his penthouse with his heart pounding and his carefully constructed emotional walls crumbling around him.
John Martinez was going to propose to Laura. And unless Leonard d
id something, she might say yes.
