Chapter 26 The Silent Protector

Chapter 26 The Silent Protector
BELLA

I tried to hide the tears in my eyes as the door creaked open, and Jasper rushed in, his small frame full of relief and worry.

“You’re awake!” His voice was almost a whisper, but his excitement was unmistakable as he climbed onto the bed. Before I could say a word, his hands cupped my cheeks, tilting my face toward him. “Why are you crying?” he asked, his eyes searching mine, the concern there so intense it caught me off guard.

I forced a smile, rubbing my eyes. “I’m not crying, silly. It’s just… water. Sometimes it happens.”

He didn’t look convinced, and I could feel him watching me even as I looked away. “I thought you were at your grandfather’s house,” I said, hoping to shift his attention.

“I was, but when I heard you were awake, I told Grandpa I didn’t want to fish anymore. I had to come see you.” His words were so simple, yet they struck something deep inside me.

I tried to tease, masking the tightness in my throat. “Oh, so you missed me?” I tickled his sides, and he broke into a giggle, wriggling beside me.

“Yes! I missed you!” He laughed, squirming and rolling across the bed, his laughter breaking through the heaviness in the room.

Then, he stilled, looking up at me with wide, thoughtful eyes. “Do you… want to leave the mansion for a bit?” His voice was gentle, his hand reaching for mine. “Get some fresh air?”

His innocence, his unspoken understanding it undid me. I nodded slowly, swallowing hard. “Yeah… I’d like that. Would you come with me?” I asked, already knowing the answer.

“Where are we going?” he asked, all curiosity now.

“I want to visit my father,” I said softly, hoping he wouldn’t pick up on the strain in my voice.

He tilted his head, thinking. “Is he sick?” His words were a whisper, as if he knew not to press too hard.

“Yes.” I squeezed his hand, feeling a swell of gratitude for this little soul who somehow sensed exactly what I needed. “I’ll meet you downstairs,” he said, darting out, giving me a moment alone.

I sat there, taking a slow, steadying breath before easing myself off the bed. My head swam a little, but I ignored it, pulling on a pair of shorts and a T-shirt, something comfortable yet presentable. As I dressed, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror eyes red, hair a mess but I didn’t have the energy to fix it. Right now, getting out of these walls was all I needed.

The ride to the hospital was quiet, the scenery slipping by as I stared out the window, letting the breeze cool my face, hoping it could somehow wash away the ache in my chest. Beside me, Jasper’s hand found mine again, his small fingers wrapping around mine, grounding me.

When we reached the hospital, I walked down the familiar hallway, my heart pounding with each step toward my father’s room. But when I reached it, my heart froze. His bed was empty. A chill rushed over me.

I turned, catching a nurse passing by. “Excuse me, my father… Where is he?” My voice trembled, fear pressing on my chest.

The nurse’s face softened. “Oh, he’s fine, ma’am. A gentleman came by and arranged for him to be moved to the VIP suite.” She gave me an apologetic smile. “We should have informed you.”

Relief flooded me, but confusion quickly followed. “A gentleman? Who?”

“He requested we keep his identity private,” she said kindly. “And he covered all of your father’s medical expenses.”

I could only stare at her, my thoughts stumbling over each other. Who could this person be? The nurse guided us down the hallway to a quiet, private room. I stepped inside, my heart pounding as I saw my father, still connected to machines, but peacefully asleep.

Jasper slipped his hand into mine, squeezing it, as if he sensed the swirl of emotions tearing through me. I sat down by the bed, reaching for my father’s hand, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath my fingers.

I leaned close, my voice barely a whisper. “Dad… I wish you could wake up. I’m so lost without you.” The words spilled out before I could stop them. “I’m married to a stranger a man who only cares about power and money. I promised myself I wouldn’t love him, not after everything that happened, but here I am… falling for someone who can never love me back.” The confession left me trembling, my head bowing against his hand.

Jasper’s tiny fingers brushed against my arm, comforting, but my heart felt like it was breaking all over again. I stayed there, hoping my father could feel my presence, could somehow give me the strength to navigate this mess I’d made of my life.

A nurse gently reminded us that visiting hours were over. As I rose, Jasper’s hand slipped into mine once again, grounding me, and I gave my father’s hand one last squeeze before following Jasper out of the room. Outside, the doctor was waiting.

“Doctor,” I said, my voice thick with questions. “My father… will he make it?”

The doctor’s expression softened. “Your father is showing signs of improvement, thanks to the generous benefactor who’s covered his expenses. We’ll be scheduling his surgery soon.”

The word surgery twisted something inside me. “Will he… survive it?”

“There’s a fifty-fifty chance.” His voice was calm, but I felt the words strike me like a blow.

I glanced away, swallowing hard. “Thank you, doctor,” I murmured, my voice barely steady.

One last question hovered on my lips. “Do you know… who the man was? The one who paid for everything?”

The doctor hesitated, sympathy in his gaze. “I’m afraid he requested privacy.”

I nodded, disappointment thickening in my chest as I walked away. Jasper tugged on my hand, his presence a gentle reminder that I wasn’t alone. Still, my mind raced with questions. Who was this man? Why was he helping us?

As we left the hospital, I felt a strange sense of hope mingling with the ache inside me. Someone out there had given my father a second chance, and maybe just maybe it was a second chance for me too.
