068: The Weight of Responsibility

As Sophia listened to Richard's heartfelt words, she felt a rush of emotions. She wanted to believe him, to trust that his intentions were genuine. "You're too good to be true," she whispered, her voice barely above a breath.

Richard squeezed her hands more gently, his eyes earnest. "I promise you, I mean every word I say."

Curiosity and a hint of skepticism lingered in Sophia's eyes. "But why? Why would you be willing to take on the responsibility of a child who isn't biologically yours? It's a huge risk, Richard."

Richard's expression softened, his gaze unwavering. "Because of affection, Sophia. I care about you and Kourtney deeply. What better reason could there be?"

Sophia nodded slowly, processing his words. "But the risks, Richard. There are so many uncertainties and challenges that come with accepting a child, legally and emotionally. What if it doesn't work out?"

Richard's voice was firm, yet gentle. "Everything in life is a risk, Sophia. But this... This is a risk I'm willing to take. What would I be losing, other than the opportunity to be a part of two wonderful lives? I couldn't forgive myself if I didn't try, if I didn't take this chance."

Sophia's eyes welled up with tears, touched by Richard's sincerity. "You're the true risk - taker, aren't you?" she whispered, a small smile playing on her lips.

Richard smiled back, his eyes reflecting his genuine affection. "For you and Kourtney, I'd take any risk."

And at that moment, Sophia's eyes lit up with curiosity as she asked about the artifact Richard and John had gone to Ilaro for, wondering if she could see it. Richard nodded, replying, "It's in the car boot. Give me a minute to get the keys from John," Releasing her hands.

Sophia nodded eagerly, watching as Richard walked towards Mrs. Abedayo's room. She then hurried after him, gently grabbing his arm before he could enter. "Wait," she said, a playful tone in her voice. "You're not planning to barge in there, are you?"

Richard chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Of course not," he replied. "I was going to knock first."

Sophia winked, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. "Good idea," she said. "There might be some... activities happening in there." She gestured towards the room, and Richard's eyes widened in understanding.

"Ah, I see," he said, nodding. "Maybe another time," he suggested, stepping back from the door. "I wouldn't want to interrupt whatever Mr. Abedayo is up to."

Sophia laughed, following Richard back towards the living room. As they settled in, Richard picked up the remote and turned on the TV, filling the room with background noise.

As Sophia and Richard settled on the couch, Richard sensed something amiss. Sophia's gaze was distant, her mind clearly elsewhere. Concerned, he gently asked, "Is something bothering you?" No response. He tried again, calling her name, but still, no reply. With a light tap on her shoulder, Sophia jolted, a startled sound escaping her lips. She had been lost in her thoughts.

Apologizing for startling her, Richard inquired again, "What's on your mind?" Sophia, composing herself, smiled faintly, "I'm just tired, that's all."

Richard, however, could see through her facade.

"You sure you're okay?" he remarked, noting how he had to touch her before she even realized he was calling her.

"Yes, Richard, I'm fine. Just really tired," Sophia insisted.

Richard, not entirely convinced, leaned back, crossing his arms. "If you say so. But if you're tired, you should head back to the room and get some rest. No need to stay out here on my account."

Sophia sighed, realizing she wasn't going to win this argument. "Thanks, Richard. I might just do that," she said, heading towards the guest room. However, as she took a few steps away from the living room, she turned back and returned to her seat with a deep sigh. "Actually, Richard, there's something I need to tell you," she began, her voice tinged with concern.

"What is it?" Richard asked, his expression now serious.

Sophia hesitated for a moment before continuing. "I received a call from my mom today. She told me she was being followed by two strangers."

"Two strangers? What happened?" Richard's tone was filled with alarm.

"I don't have all the details yet," Sophia replied, her worry evident. "But I'm really scared for her."

"Is Abigail okay?" Richard asked, his concern matching Sophia's.

"For now, yes," Sophia replied. "She managed to lose them."

"Why would you hide something like that from me?" Richard's voice was gentle but firm. "You should never keep something like this from me again. If anything happened to your mom, I wouldn't forgive myself. I'm the one who dragged you all the way here from the US."

"I'm sorry, Richard," Sophia said, her voice filled with regret. "I just didn't want to bother you."

Richard shook his head. "You can always bother me, especially if it's something as serious as this. We'll fly back first thing tomorrow morning."

Sophia looked apologetic. "I'm sorry for cutting the trip short."

Richard waved off her apology. "Fu*k the trip. Your mom's safety is what matters," he reassured her. "Besides, I already have what I came for in my possession."

Sophia felt a wave of relief, knowing that Richard was understanding. "Thank you for being so supportive," she said, grateful for his understanding and compassion. "I'll call my mom now and let her know."

Richard smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry, everything will be okay. I'll make sure of it."

With that, Sophia stood up from the couch, announcing, "I'm off to bed now."

Getting to the guestroom, she gently slid into the room, the soft light from the hallway spilling in, casting a warm glow. She tiptoed to the bed where Kourtney lay, her daughter's form barely visible under the covers. With a tender touch, Sophia adjusted the blankets, ensuring they covered both of them snugly. She wrapped her arms around Kourtney, pulling her close in a loving embrace.

"M-mommy?" Kourtney's sleepy voice broke the silence, a hint of uncertainty lingering in the air.

"Yes, sweetie, it's me," Sophia whispered, brushing a stray lock of hair from Kourtney's forehead.

"Is... is daddy back?" Kourtney's words were barely audible, her voice filled with hope and longing.

Sophia's heart skipped a beat. "Daddy?" she repeated, surprised. "I haven't seen him yet, but I think he might be," she replied, trying to sound reassuring.

Kourtney seemed satisfied with the answer, nestling back into her pillows. "It's okay, mommy. You didn't wake me up," she murmured, her words slurring with sleep.

Sophia smiled, her heart melting at her daughter's innocence. "I love you, Kourtney," she whispered, planting a gentle kiss on her forehead.

Kourtney's response was a sleepy murmur, filled with love and contentment. "I love you and daddy a million times," she mumbled, drifting back into dreams.

"Daddy and mommy love you a million and more times," Sophia whispered back, her voice filled with love and gratitude.

With a final tender stroke of Kourtney's hair, Sophia settled in beside her, ready to rest for the day.
