052: Kindness Returned

Sophia, caught off guard, struggled to find words. She then gestured for him to take a seat on the couch in front of her desk, and he responded with a calm smile. As the awkward silence lingered, Sophia apologized for her initial stare, still processing the surprise of seeing him in her office, "I'm sorry if I seemed stunned. It's just unexpected to see you here. What brings you to my office?"

The man, with a calm and reassuring smile, acknowledged her apology, understanding the curiosity his presence had sparked. He then assured her that he wouldn't be staying long, adding a touch of mystery to the encounter. Sophia, intrigued, gestured for him to continue, prompting him to explain the reason for his visit.

With a sense of sincerity, the man extended his hands towards Sophia, revealing a necklace that immediately caught her attention. It was an identical piece to the one her mom had given her during her college graduation.

Surprised, Sophia touched her neck, realizing her necklace was missing. "Is that... mine?" she inquired, eyeing the piece in the man's hands.

The Man smiling, "I found it on my table after you came to thank me at the restaurant yesterday. I thought it might be yours. And wanted to return it to you personally."

Sophia, both puzzled and intrigued, questioned, "how did you find me? how did you know i work here?"

He explained, "I tried to find you at the restaurant, but later discovered you had left. Your colleague told me how to find you."

Sophia, though grateful for his efforts, questioned, "Why didn't you just drop it with any of my colleagues to give to me?"

He then continued to explain, "I wanted to return it to you personally. I needed to know you're okay."

Sophia, touched and grateful for his concern, assured him, "Everything's fine. Thank you. This necklace means the world to me. I can't believe you went through all this trouble. I don't even know how to repay you."

He then handed Sophia the necklace, saying "It's no trouble at all. I'm glad I could return it to you. Figured it might be important. Just wanted to make sure it got back to its rightful owner."

Sophia, expressing her gratitude sincerely, said, "I can't express how grateful I am for your kindness."

The Man, with a warm smile, responded, "I'm just glad I could help."

Sophia, appreciatively, continued, "You know, this necklace has been a generational thing in my family."

The Man, curious, asked, "Really? Tell me more about it."

Sophia, speaking nostalgically, reminisced, "Well, it belonged to my grandmother. She brought it with her when she came to America. It was the only valuable thing she had. Then it was passed down to my mother, and finally to me during my college graduation."

The Man listened intently, nodding in understanding. "I can see why it's so important to you," he remarked.

Sophia, smiling gratefully, said, "Thank you again for going through the trouble to return it. I don't know what I would've done if I had lost it."

The Man reassured her, "You're welcome."

Sophia, reflecting on the significance of the necklace, shared, "I hope to pass it down to my daughter someday. She's turning five in a few days."

The Man, with genuine interest, responded, "Oh, that's wonderful! What's her name?"

Sophia answered proudly, "Her name is Kourtney."

The Man smiled warmly. "That's such a nice name. Please give her my regards for her upcoming birthday."

Sophia, filled with gratitude, replied, "I will. Thank you."

As The Man began to bid farewell, he said, "I should be going. It was nice talking to you, Sophia."

Sophia nodded, returning his farewell with a warm smile, "Likewise. Take care."

And after a few seconds, the man stepped out of Sophia's office, she remembered she didn't even ask for his name. With a sudden sense of urgency, she chased after him, closing in as he walked down the corridor. Breathing heavily, Sophia managed to catch up, and in a rush, she blurted out, "I didn't get your name."

Turning to Sophia, the man responded with a warm smile, "I'm Richard."

Sophia then offered to walk with him out of the building. And as they walked through the corridor, Sophia glanced at Richard, her eyes reflecting a mixture of gratitude and determination. "Richard, I know this might seem sudden, but I would be so grateful if you could come to my daughter's birthday party."

Richard, taken aback by the unexpected invitation, hesitated for a moment before responding, "I appreciate the invitation, Sophia. It's just that I'm not sure if I'll be free that day."

Sophia, undeterred, reached out to touch his arm gently. "You've already done so much for me, It would be a shame if I couldn't show you a little appreciation."

Richard met her earnest gaze, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Alright, Sophia. Let me check my schedule." Pulling out his phone, he scrolled through his calendar before his expression softened. "You know what? I'll cancel my plans for that day. I would be honored to come to Kourtney's birthday."

Sophia's face lit up with gratitude as she squeezed his arm. "Thank you, Richard. You have no idea how much I appreciate this."

With a nod and a warm smile, Richard assured her, "It's my pleasure, Sophia. I look forward to it."

And as they neared Richard's vehicle, Sophia turned to him with a hopeful smile. "Richard, could I perhaps have your number? Just so I can keep in touch and remind you about Kourtney's birthday?"

Richard chuckled softly, a glimmer of amusement dancing in his eyes. "Ah, Sophia, a gentleman never gives a lady his number. Instead, a gentleman collects a lady's number."

Sophia's cheeks flushed slightly at his charming response. "Oh, of course! How silly of me." She quickly retrieved her phone and offered it to him, eagerly awaiting his contact details.

Taking her phone with a gentle smile, Richard swiftly shared her number into his phone then sent a text to her. "There you go, Sophia. Now you have my number, and nothing will make me forget Kourtney's birthday."

Sophia's heart swelled with gratitude as she received the text notification. "Thank you, Richard. I really appreciate it."

With their final goodbyes exchanged, Richard climbed into his vehicle, and as he drove off into the bustling city streets. After Richard's departure, Sophia returned to her office, her mind still buzzing with the unexpected encounter. With a renewed sense of gratitude, she delved back into her work, determined to make the most of the rest of her day.

As the clock ticked towards the end of the workday, Sophia gathered her belongings and made her way out of the office. The streets were alive with the hustle and bustle of the city as she navigated her way to Kourtney's school.

Upon arrival, Sophia spotted Kourtney waiting by the school gate, her face lighting up as she caught sight of her mother. Sophia's heart swelled with affection as she greeted her daughter with a warm smile.

"How was school today, sweetheart?" Sophia asked as they walked hand in hand towards the car.

Kourtney, eager to share her day's adventures, launched into a lively recount of her school day, animatedly describing her favorite moments and the friends she played with during recess.

As they settled into the car, Sophia gently broached the topic of Kourtney's upcoming birthday. "Guess what, Kourtney? Mommy's friend will be joining us for your birthday party in a few days."

Kourtney's eyes widened with curiosity. "A friend of yours, Mommy? Is it aunt Rebekah?"

Sophia chuckled, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "No, it's not Aunt Rebekah. This is a new friend of mommy, and I'm sure you'll love him."

Throughout the drive home, Sophia and Kourtney chatted animatedly, discussing everything from Kourtney's favorite toys to her latest school projects. And as they neared home, Sophia couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment wash over her. The warmth of the conversation with Kourtney had eased the remnants of the day's stress, leaving her heart full.

Pulling into the driveway, Sophia and Kourtney exchanged playful banter as they made their way inside. The anticipation of Kourtney's upcoming birthday added an extra layer of excitement to the air.

Once inside, Sophia set about preparing a light snack for Kourtney while they discussed the plans for her birthday celebration. Kourtney eagerly shared her ideas for the party, her imagination running wild with possibilities.

With the snacks prepared, Sophia and Kourtney settled into the cozy living room, enjoying each other's company as they indulged in their favorite treats. And as bedtime approached, Sophia tucked Kourtney into bed, planting a tender kiss on her forehead. "Goodnight, my sweet girl. Dream of all the wonderful adventures waiting for you."

Kourtney snuggled under the covers, a contented smile gracing her lips. "Goodnight, Mommy. I love you."

With a smile of her own, Sophia whispered, "I love you too, Kourtney," before quietly slipping out of the room.

As she settled into her own bed, Sophia reflected on the events of the day, feeling grateful for the love and joy that filled her life. With thoughts of Kourtney's birthday party dancing in her mind, she drifted off to sleep, looking forward to the memories they would create together.
