Chapter 52 Honest Conversations
ADRIAN'S POV
I overheard my mother's conversation with Lisa from across the bonfire and winced at her directness. I had asked her not to interfere but my mother had never been subtle about anything. She believed in confronting issues head on and apparently Lisa's presence in Western Pack qualified as issue requiring immediate confrontation.
Lisa's face had gone carefully blank when my mother asked about her intentions and I saw the walls go up behind her eyes. The relaxation she had been showing over the past two weeks vanished in an instant and I wanted to kick myself for not warning Margaret to back off.
I waited until the bonfire ended and pack members dispersed to their homes before walking to Lisa's cottage. Light glowed through the windows and I could see her silhouette moving inside. I knocked softly and she opened the door looking tired.
"Can we talk?" I asked.
Lisa stepped aside to allow me enter. "Adrian, your mom… she cornered me."
"I know. I am sorry. I asked her not to interfere but Margaret has strong opinions about protecting her children from potential heartbreak."
"She has every right to ask those questions," Lisa said, surprising me. "I have been avoiding the hard questions because I am not ready to answer them. But that is not fair to you."
We sat on the porch and the night air was cool against our skin. Stars filled the sky above us and crickets sang in the grass. Lisa pulled her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them.
"I do not know what I feel for you, Adrian," Lisa said, her voice quiet but steady. "I enjoy your company and I respect you. There is an attraction I cannot deny. But I also have a mate bond with Ryan that pulls at me constantly even when I try to suppress it."
She paused and looked at me with eyes that held too much pain for someone so young. "And there is Nathan who has been nothing but kind and patient. I am a mess of conflicting emotions and you deserve better than someone who does not know what she wants."
I considered her words carefully. The honesty was refreshing even if the content was not what I wanted to hear. Lisa was not playing games or leading me on and that mattered more than declarations of love would have.
"When I invited you here, I was not expecting you to immediately fall in love with me or reject your mate bond," I said. "I was offering you space to figure things out without pressure. So here is what I propose."
Lisa turned to look at me fully and I continued. "Stop trying to make decisions right now. Just be here and experience life without the constant drama. Let yourself feel whatever you feel naturally without forcing anything or rushing to conclusions."
"Adrian, that is not fair to you," Lisa protested.
"Let me finish," I said gently. "When the month is over, if you want to go back to Moonstone Pack and try again with Ryan or Nathan, I will understand. If you want to stay here and explore what we could be, I am open to that too. But right now you need to heal and that means not putting pressure on yourself to figure out your entire romantic future."
Lisa was quiet for long moment. "Why are you being so understanding about this?"
"Because I care a lot about you," I answered. "Meaning I want what is best for you even if it is not best for me. You need time and space and I can give you that."
"Your mother thinks I am going to break your heart," Lisa said.
"My mother worries too much," I replied. "My heart is my own responsibility. You are not obligated to protect it."
Lisa smiled slightly and some of the tension left her shoulders. "You are a good man, Adrian. Better than I probably deserve right now."
"You deserve good things, Lisa. You have just been surrounded by people who made you believe otherwise."
We sat in silence for a while and I watched her profile against the starlight. She was beautiful but more than that she was strong and genuine and exactly the kind of person I wanted in my life regardless of whether romance developed.
"Okay," Lisa said finally. "I agree to your proposal. I will stop trying to make decisions and just be here. Just exist without forcing anything."
Relief flooded through me. "Good. That is all I am asking."
Lisa leaned her head against my shoulder and I felt the depth of her trust in that simple gesture. We sat like that for a long time without needing to fill the silence with words.
Eventually I stood to leave and give her space. "Get some rest. We have early morning training session tomorrow if you want to join."
"I will be there," Lisa promised.
I walked back toward the main pack house feeling more settled than I had in days. My mother's interference had actually forced this necessary conversation and the outcome was better than I had hoped. Lisa was staying and we had clarity about where things stood.
For the first time in years I felt pressure lift from my chest. The constant tension about decisions and futures and expectations just faded and I could breathe easier. No games, no manipulation, just honest communication between two people trying to figure things out.
But that same night as I was preparing for bed, my phone rang with Lisa's number on the screen. Her voice was tight when I answered.
"Daniel just called," Lisa said. "Sophia has been spotted near Moonstone Pack territory and she is not alone."
My stomach dropped. "Who is she with?"
"A powerful Alpha from the Northern Territories named Marcus Krane. He is interested in claiming Moonstone Pack through marriage alliance with their temporarily absent Alpha."
"That is insane," I said. "You are the legitimate Alpha. No one can challenge that."
"Pack law states that if an Alpha is challenged and does not return within three days to defend her position, she forfeits by default," Lisa said, her voice shaking. "Sophia is using my absence to create opening for Marcus to stake claim. If I do not get back to Moonstone Pack within three days, I will lose everything."
