Chapter 67 - A full life.

Now that Adam was officially one of us, his training as the future king had to start. It felt so strange to have to explain everything I did and why. Literally, everything had to be explained. Even why it was so important to me that Adam chose the right mate. I was beginning to understand why my father wanted to choose my mate for me, but I couldn’t do that to my son.

It was difficult to explain my relationship with my father to my son, but it had to be done, so he wouldn’t make the same mistakes my father did. If I didn’t train my son right, all of it would have been for nothing, and we would find ourselves back in a war in no time. Thankfully, Luke knew just what to say when the questions became a little too much for me to deal with.

We thought Helena would be a handful, but Adam was proving us wrong! The moment his werewolves’ genes kicked in, he became really difficult to deal with sometimes. Luke had to constantly remind me what it felt like when I was that age! Not only were you suddenly incredibly powerful, but your body was getting ready to mate … Oh, hell!

“What if he impregnates a girl that is not his mate, Luke?!” I was pacing back and forth in our room. Adam was out in the town with his friends again, and we had just been informed by my guards that he had sneaked out.

“I seemed to remember you telling me about a certain young princess who snuck out at night …” Luke pretended to frown as he pondered it and I rolled my eyes and smacked the side of his arm.

“I snuck out to fight a war.” I tried to defend my actions.

“Yes, and you could have been killed.” He grinned. He didn’t have to explain it to me. I completely understood what he was getting at! I sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. Luke sat beside me for a moment and when he placed his hand on my leg, electric shock ran through my entire body. We might not be young in love wolves anymore, but he still had an incredible effect on me.

“My love, you have to trust that the moon goddess is in control of our son’s destiny. Just like she was with you. I didn’t always like what you were up to, but it worked out, didn’t it?” He smiled, and I didn’t want to admit it but he was right. I frowned at him, not wanting to give in, but when his lips touched mine, I melted against him.

We both knew I wasn’t going to leave it there, and I didn’t. In the morning, when Adam walked into the dining room, I made it clear that I wasn’t happy with his behaviour. I hated myself for doing it the moment the words were out of my mouth! I was sounding more and more like my dang father every day! But I had to teach my son to be responsible. Helena cringed away the moment I started the conversation.

“Sit up straight young lady. You can also listen. I’m only going to say this once. If the two of you stuff up your lives, I will not be held responsible for it! You are responsible for all of our people. If you go running around like hooligans, and act irresponsibly, you can very easily lose your titles.” That seemed to draw their attention while Luke explained that we might be royal by birth, but just like in any other pack, we could be removed if we didn’t serve our people.

It was the way I had written the law all those years ago when I just took over. I wanted to give the people the right to remove a king or queen if they weren’t taking care of the people. It was part of my process to try and bring us closer to our pack. I was beginning to think I might have made a huge mistake. Back then I was only thinking that I wanted what was best for my people and I didn’t consider what could happen to my children.

Thankfully, Adam calmed down a little more and we settled into a nice routine. He focused more during his study time and I could see the future king in him grow. I was truly proud of my son on the night of his eighteenth birthday. I was secretly hoping he would find his mate at the ball like I found Luke, but it didn’t seem to be in the cards for him just yet. Now that he had turned eighteen, I was slowly beginning to hand some of my duties over to him. He was still far too young to be king, but there were things he could do that would help out.

Helena had also settled down a lot since she was younger, and she had turned into a beautiful princess. Because she was so much younger than her brother, we hadn’t had any huge balls for her yet. She was still on the children’s party stage, and I was grateful for that. I didn’t think I could handle two teenagers at the same time!

Time was slowly ticking by, and I could feel it in my bones. I was growing older, and each time I looked at Luke, I noted a new line on his face. His beautiful dark hair was slowly turning whiter, and I was lucky that I could hide my gray hair with hair colour! The older we became, the more I was reminded of what an incredible life we had led. Living through the war. Being saved by the moon goddess. Becoming mates.

I hoped that my children would one day look back on their lives and feel the same way. That they had at least lived. Even if it was through bad times. I wanted them to one day lay their heads down and feel content that they had full lives.
