Chapter 84 - The Beta's Fate
Wes stood by the window, peering through the sterile glass of Dawn’s hospital room. The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor provided the only hope in his heart, subtly affirming Dawn’s fragile hold on life.
Con couldn’t feel Ruby and was going ape sh*t in his mind, giving him the start of a voracious headache. The doctor had taken blood from her, and it had now been an hour with no results yet.
Her pale skin seemed almost translucent under the harsh fluorescent lights, a sharp contrast to her slightly sun-kissed skin. With her dark hair, she looked absolutely lifeless.
“Come on, my Angel. Open those beautiful blue eyes,” he whispered as he watched her. He hated that he couldn’t be in the room with her. They did not know what was used on her, so they weren’t certain if any outside source could hurt her further.
He paced the outside room, his eyes flicked towards the double doors the doctors had gone through with her blood. Every few seconds his eyes strayed from Dawn to the doors and back. He just wanted answers.
He thought about the men that had dared come onto his brother's land to kidnap the two she-wolves. Humans. One was killed by Dawn, the other by Farrah, and the third injured and unconscious just down the hall. He had found the darts that were also being analyzed to find out what was contained in them.
Farrah walked through the door with her mother and father. She ran over to Wes, and he wrapped his arms around her as she burst into tears.
“I can’t feel her. I don’t understand why. Jade can’t feel Ruby, she’s been reaching out. She’s desperate for her sister, as am I.”
“I know, baby. Con can’t feel Ruby either. We’ll get our answers.”
“Dad, can’t we contact Aunt Stella?”
“She’s on her way sweetie, she should be here within the hour. Jaxon sent the plane back to her the moment he was told what happened.”
Some of the anxiety left Wes. That was good. If anyone could wake Dawn, it was Stella.
Another hour went by, they had just gotten word that Stella was on her way. Suddenly, a doctor came striding out of the double doors where the lab was located.
“My Prince, it’s a concoction that’s never been done before. It is a mixture of wolfsbane, mistletoe, and silver. The patrol unit that was found knocked out also had the mixture in their blood. We have nothing to counteract this concoction, it's completely brand new. We can treat the poisonous elements one at a time, but I don’t know what that would do. It seems like the cocktail was designed to render our kind unconscious and then slowly shut down the organs in our bodies until eventually we die.”
Farrah and Lillyn let out a cry. Koda held on to his mate, as did Wes. Magnus, Mystic, and his brothers arrived five minutes later with Jaxon, Stella, and Kane in tow.
“Where is she?” Stella demanded.
Wes pointed to the room behind him. Before she could go in, the doctor tried to tell her she couldn’t.
“Who is going to stop me? That is my niece in there, and I am going to save her!”
The doctor looked at the king and Maxon nodded. Stella raced into the room. Tears sprang to her eyes seeing the young woman that she had loved as if she was her own lying in the bed looking like death.
Everyone watched as Stella rested her hands on Dawn’s head and stomach. Bright light glowed from her palms. She slowly moved her hands until they came together over Dawn’s heart. Stella concentrated on her niece’s chest and then she pressed down. A pulse went through Dawn. Her body jerked. Stella did it again and this time Dawn’s body bowed in a flexible arch. Her mouth opened, and black mist spewed out of it. Stella held her palms up and the mist burned away when it hit the light in her palms.
Stella staggered and Kane was through the door. He caught her before she collapsed.
The heart monitor’s beeps picked up rhythm. Color bloomed in Dawn’s cheeks. The doctor, Farrah, Wes and their parents, along with his brothers and Jaxon all ran into the room. Wes picked up his mate’s hand and started kissing her knuckles. Farrah ran and put her hand on Dawn’s leg. They all watched her face, hoping for her eyes to open.
The doctor examined Dawn.
“She seems to be stable. All her vitals look normal, now it’s just a waiting game to see when she will wake up.”
Wes turned to Stella and enveloped her in his arms. Kane choked as he held in his growl. Wes smiled at him and Kane rolled his eyes.
“Thank you, Aunt Stella. Thank you so much.”
“Anything for you, my boy, and anything for these girls,” She said, squeezing him.
“Besides, Jaxon would be devastated if anything happened to one of his girls,” she teased, stepping back.
Wes scoffed. Jaxon beamed at his mother and gave her a fist bump.
“Will you be able to perform on the patrol unit?” Maxon asked.
“Yes, I just need a minute,” she said. Kane grumbled but didn’t say anything coherent.
“Wes, I don’t want you to leave until Monday now. We need to give your girl as much rest as possible. If she doesn't wake up before you leave, know that once she does, we will send her to you,” Maxon said.
“She’ll wake,” Farrah said. “I can feel her, and Jade can feel Ruby already stirring.”
Just as she finished saying that, a cough came from Dawn and her eyes fluttered open.
“Wes?” she asked weakly.
“I’m here, my Angel. Right here. How are you feeling?”
“Like I died and was forcefully pulled back.”
“That’s probably what happened,” Stella said.
“Aunt Stella?”
“Hi darling.”
“What happened?”
“You were shot with a poisonous dart. Humans came and kidnapped two she-wolves. You saved them," Wes said.
“Right, I remember now. How are they?”
“They are good. We initially thought one of them got shot by a dart too, but she was just knocked out. The one girl that was still conscious said they came out of nowhere. She and her sister had gone for a walk. They wanted to get away from all the noise in the ballroom. They had decided to walk to the pond. She said they heard a noise in the tree line but couldn’t see anyone. They said it sounded like a wounded animal. They went to investigate, but then a man stepped in front of them. He sprayed something that knocked out her sister and her. But they must not have had enough to use on her because it wore out really fast, and she woke up.”
“How did they get over the border? Where were the patrol wolves?”
“They got knocked out with the same concoction as you. Stella will be helping them in a minute,” Wes said.
She nodded. “I’m glad the girls are okay. Do we know what they wanted?”
Wes shook his head. “Luckily, we captured one alive, but he’s injured. Stella, will you heal him too, so we can interrogate him?”
“You want me to heal him so you can torture him? Because we all know what “interrogate” means,” she said, using air quotes. Everyone chuckled.
“Yes, please,” Wes said.
“Fine. But I am going to be exhausted, so I want a full spa day with all expenses paid.”
“Absolutely,” Maxon said.
Koda and Lillyn hugged and kissed Dawn and then did the same with Farrah before they left. Everyone else left after visiting for a while, leaving Farrah and Wes with Dawn.
“Why were you in the forest?” Farrah asked.
“After you left, I mingled and danced. Nancy and Harriet say thank you by the way, both are with pups.”
“Oh that’s wonderful, I am glad we could help them. Now get back to your story.”
“Well, after I talked to Harriet and Nancy, I ran into Regina. She said some not so nice things and my temper almost boiled over. But while she was spewing her vitriol, Maxon and her father walked up behind her and heard everything she was saying. Her father sent her home after telling her she had to work and sleep in the stables and the bunk house.”
“Oh wow. Great punishment for someone like her, a pampered princess,” Farrah said,
“What did she say?” Wes asked.
“Nothing important. She was just trying to get under my skin with her hate.”
“I am so glad you are awake. You scared me. Let’s not do that again.”
Dawn chuckled, “Trust me, I don’t want to do that again.”
Wes kissed her and Farrah hugged her. She was moved to a private room for observation. All the others were healed and Wes couldn’t wait to start his interrogation. He would get every piece of information out of the man. He couldn’t wait.
