Chapter 14 — She's got her game up
Jane's POV:
"What are you two doing here?" Sophie's voice snapped our attention from Luca's mother to her. She had her eyebrow raised and her arms crossed over her chest.
"We..uhh...umm..." Luca struggled to give her a reason to why we were hiding under the counter so I knew that Sophie doesn't know about his parents.
"I lost my keys!" I blurted out almost too excitedly.
Sophie didn't look convinced but said nothing more about it.
"Ah huh..keep liking then." She said then turned around to leave.
My head snapped back towards Luca's mom and the driver and so did his.
That was the same driver I saw driving Luca's father around when we met at the fair. This is so messed up.
Luca's mother and the driver were talking so intimately as they held hands. Their face were only inches apart.
Then, what I feared happened. They both stopped talking and smiled deeply into each other's eyes as they leaned in.
I looked down at the hand that Luca was holding and winced as he squeezed it hard. He probably forgot that my hand was in his and I'm sure that if it wasn't, he would've been clenching them till his nails hurt his palm and bled.
I looked over to Luca's mom as her lips were about to come in contact with the driver. I can't let Luca see this. I know his mother wasn't the ideal parent but I don't think it's a good idea to let Luca see her like this.
And before Luca would witness anything I pulled his face and crashed our lips together, distracting him from the two sitting across the diner.
I only gave him a small peck then pulled away and looked into his eyes as my hands cupped his face.
"Let's go back to the beach." I whispered softly.
Luca smiled gently then nodded his head. We crawled to the back door of the diner and as the autumn wind hit our faces we rose to our feet.
Our hands stayed connected until we reached the sand again.
"Luca, how about we go to a nearby supermarket and but somethings for a picnic." I suggested.
"Yeah, that'll be great." Luca replied with a smile.
The nearest store was only two blocks away so there was no need for Luca's bike. Though the walk was short, it was quiet and neither did Luca or I opened our mouths. We just walked hand in hand in comfortable silence.
As soon as we reached the store we hurried first thing to the candy aisle. We chuckled at our similar thoughts and love for candy.
"We can get cotton candy, some chocolate bars, biscuits, and marshmallow for s'mores. Some coke and....." I listed but trailed off in the end as I was squeezing my brain for what other candy we should get.
"Chips and gummy bears!" Luca finished with a grin. I grinned back and started collecting whatever we wanted and place it in the cart.
"We should get ice cream too." Luca suggested and of course, I agreed instantly.
"We should get some real food now." I said after we filled our shopping cart with junk.
Luca sighed. "Fine."
I chuckled at his dramatic, disapproving tone.
We ended up buying toast, lettuce, tuna, smoked turkey, some strawberries, mayonnaise, three large water bottles and a blanket.
We spread the blanket on the sand and proceeded to unpack what we brought. We decided to make sandwiches and eat them first before moving on to the candy that we bought.
"Thank you." I heard Luca say as I squeezed some mayo into my sandwich.
I looked at him quizzically. "What for?" I asked, confusion lacing my every word.
"For saving me a second time. Seeing my mother like this, even though she means nothing to me, still makes my blood boil." He explained and I could feel the faint hint of pain in his eyes. He was trying to hide it so hard but I was able to catch onto it.
I reached over and pulled him closer to me, engulfing him in a tight hug. His arms snaked around my waist and mine locked themselves around his neck.
"I'll always be there for you like you are for me. That's what a girlfriend does right? Stand by her boyfriend's side at all times?" My voice was quiet and soft as my lips were in contact with Luca's shoulder, one of my hands stroking his soft hair gently.
Luca nodded in my neck and I could feel the smile that spread across his face.
"I'm so lucky I'm yours." He said as he pulled back slightly and looked intently into my eyes. I felt my heart flip inside my chest and sparks erupt throughout my whole body. I've never felt this way towards anyone before and I don't mind really, this feeling was amazing.
I felt my grin widen from ear to ear and my cheeks to be painted a deep shade of red. Luca leaned in, closing the distance between our face and soon enough our lips connected, sending us both into oblivion.
Our lips moved in sync and when Luca's tongue grazed my lower lips for entrance, the whale in my stomach growled.
Luca pulled away with a chuckle as my face flushed and I looked down at my hands in embarrassment.
"We better sedate the monster in your stomach before anything else." Luca said as he reached for my incomplete sandwich. He placed the turkey on top of the lettuce and mayo, put the last piece of toast on top then handed it to me.
"T-thank you." I mumbled as I took the sandwich from him and brought it to my mouth.
"You're very much welcomed." Luca said with a smile.
We started eating our sandwiches and reaching for the strawberries every once in a while. We have washed the strawberries and the lettuce with one of the water bottles that we bought.
"When should you be at home?" Luca asked breaking the silence.
"Uhmm....no later than four." I replied as I took another bite from my second sandwich.
"That gives us about three more hours." Luca said mostly to himself.
My eyes widened. "You mean to tell me that it's already one o'clock?" I asked in shock. No way.
"It's twelve actually but the trip back home will take time." Luca corrected but that still didn't ease my shock.
How did the time pass so fast. We barely did anything!
"How about we eat the cotton candy and ice cream while we watch a movie?" Luca asked as he wiped his hands and mouth with a tissue.
"What about the s'mores we were making?" I asked.
"I have a better idea for them." Luca replied with a grin.
"Okay then." I shrugged.
We went to a movie theater that was close by and bought two tickets for 'The Martian'. The movie was awesome, to say the least and Luca and I enjoyed it till the end as we dug into our ice cream.
It was time for us to head back home and I was dreading it with every fiber in my body.
"I'll see you tomorrow then." Luca said as I got off the bike. He parked it in an alley near my house so that no one would spot us.
"Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow." I replied with a smile. I slung my bag over my shoulder and held my jacket in my hand as I walked away from Luca and towards my house.
I sighed deeply as I reached my room but soon, a foolish grin adorned my face.
I changed into my pajamas, too lazy to take a shower but as I ran my brush through my hair, I heard tapping on my window.
Furrowing my eyebrows in confusion, I went and opened the curtains only for my eyes to gaze into Luca's sparkling ones.
"What are you doing here?" I whisper-yelled as I opened the window.
Luca grinned at me. "I forgot my goodnight kiss." He said sheepishly as he leaned forward and pecked my lips tenderly.
He pulled away with a smile and jumped back to the ground. He waved at me before running back to where his bike was parked.
My fingers grazed my lips as I couldn't help the smile that spread wide across my face.
"Who were you talking to Jane?" I heard my mom ask as she opened my bedroom door. I quickly shut my window and turned around to face her.
"No one mom. I'm coming down in a bit."
