Chapter 58: The Red Light of Fate

Chapter 58: The Red Light of Fate
The next morning.
The nurse arrived early, carrying the surgical garments prepared for Camila and Ethan. In just over fifteen minutes, the operation would begin. The atmosphere inside the hospital room was so heavy that even each breath seemed restrained.

Worry was written clearly across Camila’s face. Leon—though turmoil raged within him—forced himself to become her anchor. He was not allowed to be weak. Not now.

He stepped closer and saw Ethan still resting in his mother’s arms. Leon’s smile was forced, yet his eyes overflowed with love.
— Are you two ready? It’s almost time.

Camila gave a faint nod. Ethan lifted his head, his childish voice soft yet firm:
— I’m ready, Daddy.

The words caught in Leon’s throat. He bent down and gently stroked his son’s hair.
— That’s my captain. After this surgery, I’ll buy you as many toys as you want—no limits.

Ethan laughed, a pure sound like sunlight piercing through a storm-darkened sky.

Leon turned and clasped Camila’s trembling hand. He laid Ethan softly on the bed, then pulled her into his arms.
— Stay strong, my love. Everything will be fine. Don’t be afraid anymore.

Camila squeezed his hand tightly, her eyes brimming with tears. Leon too could no longer hold back. Hot tears streamed down his face. Two hearts, sharing the same fear, prayed for only one thing: that Ethan would survive.

But the moment was short-lived. The door swung open. The nurse’s voice was calm yet urgent:
— It’s time.

The three moved together. The hallway stretched endlessly, the pale glow of fluorescent lights casting a cold, sterile hue. Their footsteps echoed against the polished tiles, mingling with the steady roll of the gurney wheels, forming a tense rhythm—a countdown to fate.

Camila held her son’s tiny hand tightly, his palm swallowed in her sweat-soaked grip. Leon followed just behind, each step pressing heavier on his chest as he watched the figures of his wife and child draw closer to the operating room doors.

When the white steel doors came into view, Camila faltered. Rows of surgeons and nurses in blue surgical gowns stood ready, their eyes professional yet devoid of warmth. The sight alone stole her breath. Ethan gazed up at her, his round eyes bright and fearless.

— Mommy, I’m okay… he whispered, innocent words that cut her heart deeper.

She bent down and kissed him. The sweet scent of his freshly bathed hair filled her lungs, choking her with tears.
— My brave boy… Mommy will always be here, right beside you.

The great doors slowly opened. A wave of cold air swept out, heavy with antiseptic, sharp enough to sting. Harsh white light from the surgical lamps flooded the room, glaring and merciless, as though no shadow could hide from it.

Ethan was lifted from her arms and laid upon the small operating table. His little hands still reached desperately for his mother, unwilling to let go. Camila, trembling, clung to him. The thought of release alone was enough to shatter her heart. With gentle but firm insistence, the nurse separated them. At last, his small hand slipped from hers.

— Please… save my child… Camila’s choked voice spilled through her tears.

Inside, the faint metallic clash of instruments echoed—ting ting—cold and emotionless. Doctors and nurses moved swiftly, eyes sharp behind their masks. Papers rustled, suction tubes whirred, and the monitors beeped with steady indifference, each pulse marking the fragile tether of life.

Anesthesia coursed into Ethan’s veins. His lips quivered as he murmured “Mom…” one final time, fading into nothing. His hand twitched before falling limp. In that fleeting moment before unconsciousness claimed him, he glimpsed the blinding lights above—like distant stars winking out. The faces of his parents flickered like mist, then vanished.

From outside the small round window in the door, Leon watched. He forced himself to stand tall, unwilling to let Camila see his tear-reddened eyes.

The doctors swiftly turned to Camila—the donor. She was positioned on her side as a long, gleaming needle was readied.
— Bear with us for a moment. We’ll finish as quickly as possible, the surgeon reassured.

The needle pierced her skin, sinking deep into bone marrow. Pain seared through her body, sharp and merciless, wringing sweat from her brow, soaking her hair, dripping onto the white pillow. Each drop felt like life itself draining away.

Through the agony, echoes filled her mind: Ethan’s newborn cry, her lullabies, the despair of losing him, the hatred toward Leon, the instinctive love of a mother. Memories wound together, both torturing and saving her.

“If only… all of this were just a dream…”

Her eyelids grew unbearably heavy, and the world faded into suffocating black. At that precise moment, Ethan’s heart monitor shrieked—
Biiiiiiip!

The entire team froze. Camila’s own heart stopped in terror. Then, mercifully, the rhythm steadied again. Relief swept the room, though unease lingered.

Outside, the hallway lay in chilling silence. Only the red warning light above the door pulsed, only the monitor’s beeps seeped out, stabbing Leon’s ears like knives. He clung to that crimson light as though staring long enough could make it vanish—but the longer he stared, the deeper it pierced him.

He whispered desperate prayers, though he had long abandoned faith. His heart eroded with every beat.

Suddenly, a white coat passed silently down the corridor. The man cast Leon a fleeting glance before disappearing around the corner, leaving behind a nameless dread.

Then—the shrill ring of his phone shattered the silence. Leon looked at the screen, hesitated, then answered.

— Leon, stop delaying. I’ve done exactly as you asked. Now it’s your turn.

The voice was deep, cold—like a blade pressed against his chest.

Leon’s grip tightened around the phone, veins bulging in his hand. He said nothing, but his eyes darkened with heavy thoughts.

A secret. A shadow. Too dark for anyone inside that operating room to ever know.

Only God knew the full weight of what was about to unfold, the secrets hidden in the shadows of that cold, white room—secrets that no human eye could ever witness, and no heart could ever endure.”
