Chapter 56: A New Dawn for Three Hearts

Chapter 56: A New Dawn for Three Hearts
Breakfast had just been served, the clinking of spoons and forks still echoing in the warm-lit kitchen. The sweet scent of warm milk lingered in the air when little Ethan came running in, eyes wide and sparkling like stars. He stopped at the doorway, tilting his head like a curious little bird who had just uncovered a grand secret.

— Mom’s face is red! — Ethan cried out, his voice ringing so brightly it seemed to light up the whole room.

Camila startled, almost dropping the cup in her hand. She quickly set it down, trying to hide her flushed cheeks behind a curtain of hair.
— W-What are you saying, darling? — she stammered, coughing lightly as if to dodge the moment.

Leon, however, was different. He leaned back in his chair, arms folded, lips curved into a knowing smile. His deep brown eyes glimmered with both mischief and tenderness.
— Yes, that’s right. — He spoke slowly, deliberately, his gaze locked on her. — Your mom’s blushing… because of me.

— Leon! — Camila whipped her head toward him, eyes flashing. But the more she glared, the redder her cheeks grew.

Ethan burst into laughter, clutching his stomach as his giggles rang out like bells.
— I knew it! Daddy makes Mommy shy!

Leon chuckled, a deep sound brimming with amusement and affection.
— And doesn’t she look cute when she blushes, Ethan?

— Yes! Super cute! — the boy agreed wholeheartedly, his eyes sparkling with delight.

Camila could only cover her face, defeated, while father and son shared a conspiratorial laugh.

Moments later, Ethan tried clambering onto a chair, his little legs struggling until he almost tumbled—only to be caught just in time by Leon’s steady hand. Without a hint of fear, the boy promptly grabbed the largest spoon and stole a piece of cake… from Camila’s plate.

— Ethan! That’s Mommy’s! — she exclaimed, torn between scolding and laughing.

— But it looks yummier than mine! — he said matter-of-factly, crumbs sticking to his cheeks, making Leon shake his head in helpless amusement.

The tension of yesterday, the silent heaviness of the days before, seemed to dissolve with every shared laugh. Warmth filled the room, fragile yet real.

Later, when the laughter softened, Leon’s eyes lingered on Camila. He noticed the faint weariness etched around her gaze. His voice lowered, deep and gentle like autumn wind:
— How about today… we go outside for a while? Not far. Just a picnic, maybe a walk in the park.

Camila blinked, hesitant, but before she could answer, Ethan burst out:
— Yes! Let’s go! Let’s go!

He hopped in circles around the table, tugging at his mother’s hand, then darting over to cling to Leon’s arm.
— Daddy, Mommy, let’s go! I’ll bring Mr. Teddy too!

— Really? Even Teddy wants to visit the park? — Leon teased, ruffling his son’s hair.

— Of course! He loves going with me! — Ethan declared with perfect confidence, clutching his stuffed bear to his chest.

Camila laughed, light as a breeze. And for a fleeting second, she realized—it had been so long since such simple joy graced her life. For the first time, the three of them shared the same excitement for an ordinary day, free of shadows and distance.

By noon, the park bathed in golden sunlight. Birds sang overhead, and the scent of fresh grass filled the air. Perched on Leon’s shoulders, Ethan giggled uncontrollably, tiny hands gripping his father’s head.

— Mommy, take a picture of me with Daddy!

Camila’s heart fluttered at the word “Mommy” whispered into the wind. She lifted the camera with trembling hands, breath catching. Click. The image captured: her son’s radiant smile, Leon gazing up at her with eyes so deep yet gentle, as if whispering through the lens: You are my home.

Ethan squealed when he saw the photo.
— So cool! Mommy, take another one! This time I’ll hug Daddy’s neck and make a funny face!

Leon raised a brow, lips curving.
— A funny face? What if Mommy doesn’t love me anymore after seeing it?

— It’s okay, Daddy! I’ll love you instead! — Ethan replied innocently, leaving Camila laughing so hard she nearly teared up.

On the grass, Ethan chased after a yellow butterfly, his laughter echoing. Then—he stumbled, falling flat.
— Ethan! — Camila’s voice broke in panic.

But Leon was faster, scooping the boy up before tears could fall.
— Did it hurt, champ?

Ethan’s lips quivered, but upon seeing his mother’s worried face, he forced a wobbly grin.
— I’m fine… I’m strong!

Camila’s heart melted, both aching and tender.

During lunch, Ethan clumsily devoured his sandwich, ketchup smeared across his cheeks. Leon quietly wiped it away with a napkin, then glanced at Camila.
— Hmm… this feels familiar. Were you this messy when you were little?

Camila flushed.
— You—!

Ethan blinked innocently.
— Mommy was messy like me too?

Camila laughed, caught between embarrassment and joy.

Later, when fatigue tugged at her, Leon spread his jacket on the grass and guided Camila to sit. Ethan busied himself gathering wildflowers, humming to himself. Soon he returned, carefully tucking the blooms into his mother’s hair.
— Isn’t she pretty, Daddy?

— Beautiful. — Leon answered instantly, his gaze never wavering from Camila.

She bent down, kissing her son’s forehead, her heart swelling with fragile warmth that stung her eyes. But then—an unbidden sigh escaped her lips. Shadows of the past flickered: loneliness, loss, fleeting joys that dissolved like mist.

Would this happiness last? Or was it only a fragile dream, waiting to shatter?

Leon heard her sigh. He sat beside her, taking her trembling hand. His voice was low but resolute, as if carved in stone:
— I don’t know what tomorrow holds. But today, I’ll hold your hand—and his. And I will not let go.

Her eyes lifted to meet his. That gaze spoke louder than promises, stronger than vows. Her chest trembled, yet her heart surrendered, enveloped in warmth she could no longer deny.
— Leon… I…

But words faltered, her throat tight.
— Shh. — He placed a gentle finger against her lips. — Just trust me.

Evening descended. The park glowed with the amber wash of sunset. Exhausted from play, Ethan dozed in Camila’s arms, soft hair pressed against her chest, breathing steady like a lullaby.

In his sleep, he murmured faintly:
— …Daddy… Mommy…

A simple call, innocent and fleeting, yet it pierced Camila’s heart. She hugged him tighter, tears shimmering at the corners of her eyes.

Leon stepped closer, wrapping his arms around them both. In silence, a vow formed within him: This is my reason. This is everything I will fight for.

He lowered his voice, whispering into the fading light:
— My little family…

Camila looked up at the blazing sky, colors pouring across the horizon. And in that moment, she knew—this happiness was no longer a fleeting dream. It was real, and it was hers to hold.

The sunset cloaked them in its golden embrace, a radiant shawl wrapping the three together. And there, quietly but surely, a new beginning was written.
