Chapter 54: Where It Hurts

Chapter 54: Where It Hurts
The Next Morning

The early sunlight streamed through the glass window, casting slender golden streaks across the wooden floor, glittering faintly in the silence. Birds chirped here and there in the garden, while a gentle breeze carried with it the scent of roses, like nature’s own whispering invitation.

Camila opened her eyes. An emptiness swept over her at once—the space beside her was cold, void of Leon’s warmth. The pillow next to her was icy, a silent trace that he had risen long ago.

She sat up slowly, slipped on a thin robe, and her bare footsteps echoed softly along the long corridor. The living room was empty. The study too. Everything was neat—so neat it felt suffocatingly still, as if the vast house had swallowed all traces of breath.

A flicker of unease stirred in her chest, growing sharper as she passed through each sunlit yet chillingly vacant doorway, haunted by a sense of absence she could not name.

At last, when she circled to the back garden, she stopped.

Leon sat on the wooden swing, his shadow stretched long under the morning sun. Before him lay the wide rose garden, every bloom unfurling in crimson purity, their fragrance twining with the breeze, intoxicating in its gentleness. Yet his face was distant, his gaze not resting on the brilliant blossoms, but fixed on some faraway place—a memory, a fear—somewhere she could not reach.

Camila froze. Her heart tightened with a vague ache of estrangement. The man she loved sat there, familiar in form, yet cloaked in a strangeness that held her steps back.

Slowly, she approached. The crunch of gravel underfoot drew him out of his heavy thoughts. He turned, startled at first, then softened into a faint smile, patting the space beside him.

“Come here.”

Camila sat down. At once, his arm slid around her shoulders, pulling her close. The warmth was familiar, yet silence pressed down upon them. His fingertips moved absently along her narrow shoulders—an act that soothed, yet at the same time sought solace for himself.

Camila bit her lip, the weight of the silence unbearable.

“Leon…” Her voice was low, trembling. “Are you hiding something from me?”

His body tensed. His hand on the swing tightened until his knuckles blanched. In his eyes flickered surprise—then fear, as if she had touched the very door he had sworn to keep shut. He averted his gaze for a fleeting moment before forcing himself to meet hers again.

Camila’s heart sank at that fleeting hesitation. She drew a breath, pressed on:

“Yesterday… I overheard your phone call. With someone. Was it… Celeste?”

Leon’s silence was answer enough. His face darkened, his expression hardening into that cold determination she both feared and loved.

“And… does it have to do with the marriage certificate between you and her?”

The air froze. Outside, the roses rustled in the wind, but in Camila’s chest a storm raged, violent and unrelenting.

Leon turned to her, seizing her hand. His gaze locked on hers—stern, unwavering, yet pleading beneath the surface.

“Camila… do you trust me?”

Her heart ached. Even amidst suspicion, his eyes carried the same gravity that had sheltered her all these years. Silence stretched, then she nodded faintly, a trembling smile on her lips.

“I’ve always trusted you, Leon.”

He pulled her into his embrace, holding her tight. His chest trembled with each weighted breath. His voice was low, every word like a vow carved deep:

“Please… give me more time. When everything is settled, I’ll tell you the truth. I promise.”

Camila closed her eyes, arms circling him tighter, as if to banish the unseen distance between them. The marriage certificate still haunted her, his secrets loomed like shadows—but more than anything, she knew only this: this man was the father of her child, and the one love she had never, ever ceased to hold.

…

Later that morning, the family’s private physician arrived. The middle-aged man carried his medical case into Ethan’s room, the clinking of instruments blending with the boy’s polite, gentle replies.

When the checkup was complete, the doctor stepped into the living room, speaking quietly to Leon.

“For now, Ethan’s mental and physical health is stable. He meets the requirements for the bone marrow transplant scheduled for next week.”

Leon nodded, clasping his hand firmly, his voice steady:
“Thank you, doctor. I’ll be counting on you.”

After the doctor left, Leon lingered at the doorway a moment longer, closing his eyes, drawing in a long, deep breath. His shoulders trembled faintly, as though fear long restrained wanted to break free. But he gathered himself, locking it away, before turning back to Camila and Ethan.

Inside, Camila crouched before her son, arranging his toys as they chatted. Ethan giggled, lifting his teddy bear to play “doctor.” The sight was so tender, so peaceful, that Leon wanted to frame it in his heart forever—to guard him against the storms that loomed ahead.

But suddenly, Camila winced, her hand clutching her back. A sharp pain, like a cold blade, shot up her spine, forcing her breath into ragged gasps. Sweat broke across her pale forehead.

“Mama?” Ethan cried, eyes wide in panic. He pressed the teddy bear against her back, whispering desperately: “Doctor Bear will make it better… please don’t hurt, Mama.”

Camila forced a smile through the pain, touched beyond words as she squeezed her son’s tiny hand.

At that moment, Leon entered. The scene before him rooted him to the spot for an instant—then he rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside her.

“Camila!” His voice was tight, brimming with alarm. “Where does it hurt? Tell me.”

She shook her head weakly, her voice fragile. “It’s… nothing. Just tired, maybe.”

He slid his hand gently along her spine, his touch tender yet trembling with worry. “Relax… breathe deep for me.”

Ethan stood frozen, eyes brimming with tears, his little face contorted in fear. Leon turned, his tone softening in reassurance:

“Ethan, your mama just needs rest. Be a good boy and play in your room, alright?”

The boy hesitated, then nodded slowly. “Yes… I’ll be good.”

Leon rose, gathering Camila into his arms, steadying her against him. His grip was firm, his whisper trembling as it brushed her ear:

“I’ll take you to bed. I’m here, Camila. Don’t be afraid.”

She leaned into him, her breathing slowly calming. Yet in his eyes flashed a fleeting panic—an unspoken dread that these sudden pains were but a harbinger of something far worse, waiting just beyond sight.

Camila did not see. She only felt his warmth, his embrace shielding her. And in her heart, amid unspoken secrets and unanswered pain, one truth remained steadfast: Leon’s arms, however burdened with hidden fears, would always be the home she longed for.
