Chapter 130 Chapter 130: Transferring Wolves
Senna’s POV
Through Verity’s eyes, the forest tore past us. Her paws hit the ground as we ran. The fire was everywhere and spreading very quickly. The flames singed her fur as she ran.
Everyone else was close behind us. We could hear them following us as we ran. With the fire spreading, Verity ran as fast as she could. Before long, we burst through the trees and out onto the beach.
The moon was high overhead and full. It cast a soft glow onto the beach. There were torches lit in a semi-circle, illuminating the beach.
Verity turned to face everyone else. The others came flooding out of the forest.
Korrigan and Isolde stood side by side. Korrigan gripped his knife, Isolde held her bow. Beside Isolde stood Junie. For a moment, I was furious that Kalev had taken Junie to the fight. But he must have had his reasons. Kalen stood a few feet away with the other sector borns.
To their right stood the nobles, their faces firm. They all clutched their assorted weapons. Orrin walked between the two groups, towards us. His scent washed over Verity and she howled.
Orrin and Verity stood face to face.
“I can’t hold him back much longer,” Verity said, gritting her teeth. I could feel her pain as she pushed against Viktor. Orrin took a submissive stance. It was clear that he wasn’t going to hurt Verity.
Behind the group, the forest fire raged. The wind caught the flames and they blew high across the sky. The smell of smoke filtered out onto the beach.
“What do we do?” Verity asked.
“Let me help you.”
The voice was small. It came from somewhere else, somewhere outside of us.
“Who is that?” I asked Verity.
Her eyes landed on Kalen.
“Kenna,” Verity said.
Kenna? That name sounded an awful lot like mine. Verity read my thoughts.
“She was named for you,” Verity explained.
“Who’s Kenna?” I asked, confused.
“Kalen’s wolf,” Verity told me.
My heart clutched. Kalen’s wolf was named for me? But how? Had he named her himself? Sometimes that happened. Some wolves came to us nameless. I was touched. Maybe Kalen had really loved me after all.
“She is small and weak. She hasn’t had the chance to run like other wolves,” Verity explained.
“How can you talk to her?” I asked.
“I can connect with her. It’s a special link flora wolves have. We use the energy in nature to connect.”
“Please?” the voice said. “I can help you.”
Kalen took a step forward. He had a strange look on his face, with a weak smile. He held out his hands, palms up.
“Can she help us?” I asked Verity.
“She can,” Verity replied. “But it’s very dangerous.”
Just then, a wave of pain washed over Verity. “He’s strong, Senna. He’s going to overcome me. And if he does, I won’t be able to stop him. He’ll use me.”
“Verity,” Kenna said. “I want to do this. Please.”
Verity shook her head.
“Why don’t you let her help?” I asked. I was on the verge of panic now. If Viktor overtook Verity, he’d have the island on his side. He’d kill all of us. Orrin stayed low to the ground. The moonlight caused his fur to shine. His sad eyes remained locked on Verity.
“Let me,” Kenna said again.
“I don’t understand,” I told Verity. “What is she trying to do?”
“It’s the only way, Verity. We can’t let all these people die.” Kenna’s voice cracked. She was pleading with Verity, her voice desperate.
“Tell me,” I told Verity. “What’s happening? What’s the only way? What does she mean.”
Verity was silent for a moment.
“Are you sure?” she asked Kenna.
Kenna’s voice was confident this time. “I am sure, Verity. Let me do this for you. For all of them.”
Verity lowered her head. “You are very brave, Kenna. Okay.” Verity whispered. “Okay, Kenna.”
A burst of blue flashed before our eyes. Then everything went dark. When we opened our eyes again, we were looking at the beach, but from a different vantage point. We were behind Orrin. A different wolf was standing in front of Orrin where we’d been standing.
“Oh my god,” I whispered. “You…you switched places?” I asked Verity.
“Yes,” Verity said. “Kenna is sacrificing herself for everyone else.”
“But that wolf is weak,” I told Verity.
It was true. Kalen’s wolf looked so small and thin next to Orrin’s massive frame. The wolf was so weak she could barely stand on her own four legs. She hadn’t been let out enough. She hadn’t had the chance to use her muscles. She’d been locked away inside of Kalen almost her entire life because Kalen was afraid to let her out. He was scared that she’d been hunted, as a flora wolf.
The wolf yelped. Then she raised her head to the moon and howled. It was a high-pitched, mournful howl. Puzzled, everyone glanced at one another.
Orrin growled, confused by the transfer. Everyone else stood in shock. They all saw Verity shift into the new wolf, Kenna. But no one had noticed yet that Kalen had also shifted. Verity stood in Kalen’s place.
“That wolf is no match for Orrin,” I said. Orrin would kill her easily. That poor, weak wolf didn’t even stand a chance. It could barely stand up, let alone fight a massive wolf like Orrin.
“She doesn’t need to be,” Verity told. “That’s the point. She isn’t going to fight him. We transferred so that I could use the island to kill Viktor.”
“But Viktor IS Kenna right now,” I told her. Then I realized what really happened. My heart dropped. “No, Verity,” I said.
Verity was going to kill Kenna. I couldn’t even bear the thought.
“It’s the only way, Senna,” Verity said. “Don’t be sad for her. She did this willingly. She will save everyone. Kenna is a hero.”
“But she’ll die,” I replied. My heart clutched. Was this really the only way? There had to be another way. There had to be something else we could do.
“There isn’t,” Verity replied. “She knows that. It’s the only way to kill Viktor. We have to take her down. And we will take down Viktor in the process.”
