Chapter 305
Chapter 305
【Luna's perspective】
The news of Max's recovery spread like wildfire across all major media platforms. Videos and articles announcing that reports of his death had been greatly exaggerated dominated social media and made headlines on mainstream news sites. The Morrison family had issued a brief statement confirming with no further details provided.
Meanwhile, the presidential election proceeded as scheduled. Robert Coleman Sterling, who had lost by a significant margin and announced his retirement from politics with a terse statement.
The new president, young and charismatic, had campaigned on a platform of transparency and security reform that resonated deeply with the American public after the Shadow Organization scandal broke.
Grace had undergone a profound transformation. After learning that her fiancé Noah was actually a Shadow operative who had been using her, she made the painful decision to terminate her pregnancy, already several months along. The once flamboyant and attention-seeking daughter of the former president now maintained a low profile, eventually marrying a respected political strategist in a private ceremony.
In the aftermath of the Shadow Organization's exposure, national security protocols were completely overhauled. Background checks became more rigorous for government positions, military recruits, and even military spouses. The days of infiltration and manipulation were being systematically addressed through institutional reform.
---
Two months after these events, I found myself in the Central Laboratory's research area at Morrison Group headquarters. Dressed in a white lab coat with my red hair tied up in a neat bun, I focused intently on analyzing new properties of Light Matter. Several senior researchers stood behind me, observing as I documented the substance's splitting sequence.
"How did you identify this splitting pattern?" one of them asked, clearly impressed.
I pushed the microscope toward him with a small smile. "Take a look at this data."
The scientists examined my findings, their expressions shifting from curiosity to amazement and excitement. The room buzzed with their animated discussions about potential applications and further research directions.
As lunchtime approached, I removed my lab coat, hung it carefully on the rack, and headed toward the exit. My heart skipped a beat when I spotted a familiar figure waiting outside the laboratory building.
Max stood there, looking more handsome than ever in his tailored suit. His eyes found mine immediately, and the intensity of his gaze made my knees weak. I felt a storm of emotions inside me, but maintained a composed exterior, only the slight glimmer of tears in my eyes and the subtle quiver of my lips betraying my feelings.
He strode toward me with purpose, and I moved to meet him halfway. When we reached each other, he pulled me into a tight embrace without hesitation. I closed my eyes and let tears of joy slide down my cheeks as I buried my face against his chest, feeling his warmth, his heartbeat, his breath.
"Luna, I'm back," he whispered, his voice low and intimate.
I couldn't speak, just nodded against his chest, holding him tighter.
---
I led Max back to my Executive Residence suite, his hand firmly clasping mine as we walked. Once inside, he tried to kiss me, but I placed my hand against his chest to stop him.
"What are you doing?" I asked softly.
Max smiled, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "You're bringing me to your suite so early in the day, I thought you wanted to..."
"No, that's not it," I denied, feeling heat rise to my cheeks. "Let me go first."
As we entered deeper into the suite, we found a nanny dozing beside a crib. Inside, our little boy Liam was playing quietly with a small toy, remarkably content for a baby his age.
When Liam spotted Max, he paused and stared with intense focus, as if trying to solve a puzzle. When his eyes shifted to me, however, he immediately brightened, making excited "ah-ya" sounds and reaching out with his tiny hands.
The nanny jolted awake, looking mortified. "Mr. Morrison, Mrs. Morrison, please forgive me. I dozed off accidentally."
"It's alright," I reassured her. "You've been working hard these past few days."
I lifted Liam from his crib, and he beamed in my arms, his little hands patting my cheeks affectionately. Max watched us, visibly moved by how much his son had grown during his absence. Liam could now play with toys, roll over, and showed clear recognition of people.
"Come here, let daddy hold you," Max said, his voice filled with love as he extended his arms.
When I transferred Liam to Max's embrace, the baby's smile vanished. He regarded his father with a serious, almost scrutinizing gaze. Father and son locked eyes, neither smiling, creating an oddly intense moment.
"Why is he staring at me like this?" Max asked, curious rather than concerned.
"He probably finds you a bit unfamiliar," I explained. "But it's a good sign that he's not crying. He usually cries with strangers."
Max bent down to kiss Liam's chubby cheek. In response, Liam's little hand shot up and landed with a surprising "smack" against Max's face.
All three adults froze in shock. I quickly took Liam from Max and handed him to the nanny, then gently touched Max's cheek where our son had slapped him.
"Don't take it personally," I said anxiously. "He's only five months old. He doesn't know what he's doing."
Max caught my hand and kissed it reassuringly. "I'm not upset, just surprised. The little guy has good reflexes and strong defensive instincts. That's actually a positive thing."
Another nanny arrived with our lunch, taking over baby duties from the first one.
"Be good, sweetheart," I told Liam. "Mommy and Daddy will be back after lunch to play with you."
"Be good," Max echoed, thinking to himself that he would build their father-son relationship gradually.
As we left the nursery, Max pulled me into the adjacent study, closing the door behind us.
"I thought we were going to have lunch?" I asked, confused by the detour.
Max answered by pressing me against the door and capturing my lips in a deep, passionate kiss.
