Chapter 20

Chapter 20
The Hunter Becomes the Hunted

He doesn’t get it.

Not yet.

He watches me like I’m a ghost like I’m something he once knew, but now, I’m beyond his reach.

And I know he’s trying to catch my gaze. I can feel the weight of it, the way his eyes burn into my back. He wants my attention. He wants me to see the ache in his eyes, the desperation, the guilt.

He’s waiting for me to acknowledge him.

But I won’t.

I won’t even look.

Not anymore.

I’ve spent too long in his shadow, too long being his broken thing. I’ve crawled through his mess, bled for him, loved him in all the wrong ways. And now… now, I’m something else entirely.

The world shifts beneath me as I step forward, as I leave him behind.

It’s not that I don’t feel it the bond, the pull. It’s like a rope pulling at my chest, a promise, a tether.

But I’ve learned to live with the pain.

And now, I will make him live with it too.

His wolf roars beneath his skin, but this time, it’s not calling to me. It’s clawing at the walls of his cage, desperate, fractured.

His eyes finally meet mine.

I don’t react. I keep walking, one foot in front of the other.

I can almost hear his heartbeat speeding up. The raw need to reclaim what he once owned. To fix what he broke.

But I’m not his to fix anymore.

Not when I’m the one holding the power.

I see his hand move toward me.

I feel the way his body tenses like he’s going to reach for me, pull me back into that place where I don’t belong.

But I don’t stop. I don’t even flinch.

The room is alive with tension. The whispers, the stares, the judgment. But nothing matters but the space between Jake and me.

Nothing matters but the distance I’ve put between us.

And with every step I take, the ache in his eyes grows. But I’m done. I’ve stepped into the light. Into the storm, I’ve always been.

I hear him speak my name soft, strained.

But I don’t turn.

The sound of it only reminds me of everything I’ve left behind, everything he took from me.

I’ve learned to silence the voice that whispers to go back to him. To run into his arms and pretend it wasn’t all a lie.

But I won’t. Not anymore.

I keep walking.

The air shifts again more subtle this time. But I feel it.

Kade is still there, watching me from the sidelines. His gaze is a quiet storm. He hasn’t moved. He doesn’t need to.

His presence is enough to remind me that I’m not just a child of this pack. I’m not just a cast-off, a reject. I am something else.

I don’t belong to Jake.

I don’t belong to this pack.

I belong to the shadow.

And that’s the thing Jake doesn’t understand. He never understood me. Not really. He saw what he wanted to see softness, loyalty, a wolf to tame.

But I wasn’t made to be tamed. Not by him. Not by anyone.

He takes a step forward, his chest rising with a breath he hasn’t released.

But I can feel it. He’s stumbling. Lost.

He doesn’t know how to reach me anymore.

He doesn’t know how to break through the walls I’ve built.

For the first time, I see it in his eyes: uncertainty.

I’ve always been the one who followed him. The one who bent, who gave in. But now? Now, it’s his turn to chase.

And I’m not going to make it easy for him.

I reach the door.

The exit.

I don’t pause.

But he doesn’t follow me immediately.

I feel him stop, his wolf’s agony echoing in his mind. The ache of not being enough. The pain of losing me—not just as his mate, but as his tether.

I hear the growling rumble in his chest, low, deep, pained. And I know it’s not just anger. It’s frustration. It’s something raw, primal.

I feel a flicker of doubt in the air, a tremor in his wolf. And I let it.

He wants to control it. He wants to reign in his beast and wants to keep his pack in line, but the truth is, Jake’s never been able to control the one thing that matters the most.

Me.

I move through the door, my back to him, my mind focused on the path ahead. The power that surges inside me is intoxicating. Every step I take feels more like a claim. A promise.

I’m not running from him. I’m walking away from everything he thought I would be.

The whispers followed me, the ones that didn’t see me. The ones who have no idea what I’ve become. What I’ve claimed.

But they will.

They’ll all know soon enough.

The night is still young.

I hear the door behind me slam open. A shout. Footsteps that are no longer hesitant. Jake is coming. I know he is.

But I’m already too far gone.

The air shifts again, and I know he’s close.

I should be scared.

I should feel something.

But all I feel is nothing.

And then, I hear it.

The snap of bone, the shift of a wolf forced into submission.

Jake’s wolf is finally free.

But this time, I won’t be the one running.

I won’t be the one begging.

And for the first time, I understand what it means to be free.

But as the cold air rushes against my skin, I hear a voice behind me.

Not Jake’s.

And it’s not Kade’s either.

It’s something darker, something older.

I stop dead in my tracks, heart pounding in my chest.

Something’s wrong.

The voice whispers my name. Low, a promise, a warning. “You’ve made a grave mistake.”

My body freezes.

I turn slowly.

And I’m faced with the last thing I expected

The storm is not just Jake. It’s not just Kade.

There’s something else out there something more dangerous. And it’s been waiting for the right moment to strike.

Now, it’s here.

And for once, it’s not me they’re after.

It’s him.

And I’m standing between them.

The Hunter Becomes the Hunted, picking up right after the cliffhanger and delving into the tension and chaos that follows Lily’s encounter with a new, unexpected threat. The chapter will focus on the growing danger and the realization that Jake, Kade, and Lily are now tangled in something far greater than their fractured past.

I turn slowly, the silence around me suffocating. The air crackles with a presence that I can’t place, a heaviness pressing in from every angle. For a moment, it feels like the world has tilted off its axis as everything I thought I knew about myself, about Jake, about the dark forces in this world has just been shattered into a million jagged pieces.

I scan the room. My eyes catch the flicker of shadows in the corners, the way the light bends unnaturally as if it’s trying to avoid something.

And then, I see him.

Standing just outside the door, the silhouette of a man cloaked in shadows. His features are obscured by the darkness, but the aura around him… I feel it like a storm rolling in. Cold. Violent.

A voice that isn’t Jake’s. A voice that’s deep and low, barely a whisper, yet it vibrates through my bones, curling around my heart. “You’ve made a grave mistake.”

The words are a warning, but they feel like a promise.

I take a step back, my breath catching in my throat. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up, every instinct screaming at me to run, to shift and flee but I can’t move. Not yet.

I’ve never felt this kind of coldness before. Not from Kade. Not from Jake. This is something different.

The man’s eyes catch the dim light, and I see them glowing with an unnatural hue. Not the amber of a wolf, not the deep gold of Kade’s gaze. No, these are silver. Like the moon reflected on the glass, sharp and cutting. They pierce through me, seeing right into the depths of my soul.

For a moment, I wonder if I’ve seen this man before. If his presence is something I should recognize. But no this is different. This isn’t a memory. This is something new. Something far more dangerous.

My heart begins to pound in my chest.

Jake’s voice cuts through the tension like a blade, but there’s something frantic in his tone. "Lily, stay away from him! He’s not"

But the man’s voice rises, drowning Jake out. "You think you can just walk in here and take what’s mine? What you have, she belongs to me."

I feel a twist in my gut, a deep, hollow pull at the words he just uttered. My mind races, trying to piece together the meaning. He’s not talking about Jake, is he? No. This is something else entirely.

Jake’s wolf snarls inside him. The fury is undeniable, the need to protect, to fight, to take control. But the man in front of me doesn’t flinch. Doesn’t back down. Instead, he takes a step closer, his silhouette sharp in the dim light.

"Who are you?" I finally manage to say, the words tasting foreign on my tongue.

The man smiles, but it’s not a smile I recognize. It’s something cruel, predatory, the kind of smile you give when you’re watching your prey struggle in the trap you set for it.

"My name doesn’t matter," he says. "Not yet. But you… you’re a different story." His gaze flickers to Jake, then back to me. "You’re the one who’s been causing all the noise. The one who will break him."

I don’t know what he means, but I don’t like it. Something in his tone, in the way he says you, makes my skin crawl. He knows me, knows something about me that I don’t.

Jake steps forward then, his body stiff, his eyes burning with that helpless anger. “Stay back, Lily,” he warns, but there’s a thread of uncertainty in his voice now. His wolf is still restless, trying to fight the pull of whatever power this man wields. "He’s not someone you want to mess with. We need to leave. Now."

But the man laughs low and dark. A sound that chills my bones.

"You think I’m afraid of you?" His eyes lock onto mine again, and the intensity of his gaze holds me captive. "No, sweetheart. I’m not afraid of you. You’re the one who should be afraid of me."

I don’t know what he means by that. I don’t know who he is, why he’s here, or why he seems to have a claim over me. But the tension in the air thickens. Every instinct tells me that this is not just some random rogue.

This is something much older.

Much more dangerous.

And I have no idea how I’m going to survive it.

Jake moves again, his muscles coiling, ready to lunge, but Kade’s presence halts him. Without a word, without even looking at him, Kade steps in front of me, his body a shield between me and the stranger. His posture is calm and unyielding. But there’s something in his eyes a flicker of something sharp that I’ve never seen before.

"Who are you?" Kade demands, his voice low, deadly. "What do you want with her?"

The man’s eyes flicker to Kade, and a wicked grin spreads across his face. "Ah, the rogue alpha. I should’ve known. But you’re just as foolish as the rest of them." He pauses for a moment, as though weighing his words. "I’m here to collect what’s mine, and I’m not leaving without her."

The words hit me like a slap. I freeze, my mind reeling from the sudden shift. I look at Kade, then back at Jake, both of them now standing in front of me, but the sense of danger is overwhelming.

The man steps closer again, his movements slow, deliberate. "You’ll learn, little wolf. The one you’re running from has always been yours. You just didn’t know it."

I take a step back, my pulse hammering. Something about what he says gnaws at the edges of my mind. But before I can process it, his eyes narrow, his lips curling into a sneer.

"You don’t know what you’ve walked into, girl. And now, you’re going to pay for it."

Jake growls, his wolf rising to the surface, but he’s not fast enough. The man’s eyes flash with silver light, and before I can react, the temperature in the room plummets.

I feel it first the icy tendrils of power creeping over my skin, seeping into my bones. It’s not just cold. It’s suffocating like the weight of a thousand years pressing down on me. And then, the shadows in the corners of the room shift.

The man raises his hand, and the room around us begins to warp.

The walls stretch.

The floor buckles.

Time itself seems to fracture.

I feel my chest tighten, the pull of something dark, something unfathomable, tugging at my very essence. My wolf stirs in panic. I can hear the growl in the back of my throat, but I can’t fight it. Not yet.

And then, with a final flash of silver light, everything goes black.

The man’s power consumes the room, warping reality itself, and I feel the last shreds of my control slipping away. Jake and Kade are nothing more than shadows in the dark. This man, this powerful, ancient force, has cornered me.

And I have no idea how to escape.
