Chapter 18

Chapter 18
The Mate’s Restlessness

I wake up clawing the sheets again.

No nightmare.

No dream.

Just this pressure.

A weight behind my ribs. A silence in my head that shouldn't be there. My wolf usually roars but is barely a whisper now.

And that whisper’s not mine.

It’s hers.

Except… I don’t know who she is.

I pace.

The air stings. The walls are too close. My skin doesn't feel like mine.

This isn't normal.

Nothing is.

I was fine.

I had everything.

Power. Control. The pack. Selena.

Then the dreams started.

A scream in the dark. A girl turned away. A touch I never had but still remember.

My wolf won’t eat. Won’t sleep. Won’t speak.

He’s crouched in the back of my mind, growling at shadows I can’t see.

I told myself it was nothing.

Stress. Guilt. Ghosts of broken bonds.

But now... I’m not so sure.

Because the ghost is starting to fight back.

And it knows my name.

Today, I shift.

I run the territory border four times over.

It doesn’t help.

The scent’s changed.

Something is here.

Something powerful.

It’s not rogue. Not pack. Not prey.

It’s pulling at me.

Dragging my chest apart. Thread by thread.

The other Alphas don’t sense it. Or they’re pretending not to.

But I see it.

On the way,, their wolves pause near the eastern woods. On the way, their ears twitch at the wrong wind.

Something is coming.

No.

Someone.

And my wolf knows it.

He claws his way up, snarling, eyes glowing gold and black at once.

Not just Alpha anymore.

Something older.

Something broken.

I growl, trying to push him down.

But he snaps his jaws at me.

He wants her.

But who?

Three nights pass.

I can’t sleep.

Every time I close my eyes, I see her back turned.

Hair like ash. Skin like a flame. Mark like mine.

But her eyes

They burn through me.

Silver and red.

Like judgment.

Like revenge.

I don’t know her.

But she knows me.

And each night she gets closer.

Last night, she spoke.

Just one word.

“Remember.”

And I did.

Not clearly.

But just enough.

A girl in chains. A rejection. A lie. A mark that should’ve burned brighter.

My stomach turns.

My wolf howls.

I run again. Deep into the mountains this time.

Away from the pack.

Away from Selena.

Away from the lies.

But the presence follows.

Always just behind.

Never touching.

Just watching.

And now… it’s started to whisper.

“You took what wasn’t yours.”

“You broke what you couldn’t hold.”

“She’s coming.”

I go to the mirror.

Look at the mark on my chest.

The one I swore was a sign of Alpha power.

It’s cracked. It veined like something was leaking out of it.

Rot.

Or truth.

I touch it.

And visions flood me.

Not mine.

Hers.

Screams. Fire. Betrayal.

Rogues kneeling. Shadows whispering. Power surging.

Eyes turning from blue to silver to black.

And a voice.

Mine.

But I never said those words.

“I reject you, Lily.”

The name breaks something.

My knees hit the ground.

Blood from my nose.

A scream from my wolf.

He remembers.

But I don’t.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But it’s starting.

The unraveling.

The remembering.

The punishment.

I call for Selena.

She doesn’t answer.

Not in the house.

Not in the link.

She’s gone.

Or hiding.

Or running.

But I smell her panic.

And it’s not for herself.

It’s for me.

I storm through the halls.

Guards avert their eyes.

Beta looks like he wants to speak.

But doesn’t.

They all know.

Something I don’t.

They’ve always known.

I throw open the Council’s vault.

Old scrolls.

Faded prophecies.

Rejected truths.

And in the center

A sealed document.

Stained in blood.

Labeled only with one name:

“The Alpha’s True Mate.”

I tear it open.

The words blur.

But one line stands out.

One I’ll never forget again.

“She who is cast out shall rise in flame. And he who rejected her shall burn.”

The paper disintegrates in my hands.

My wolf screams.

My eyes shift. Fully, unnaturally.

Gold to black.

And in the glass

Her reflection.

Behind me.

Not real.

Not yet.

But close.

Too close.

She leans in.

And whispers:

“I’m coming home, Alpha.”

Jake finally starts remembering the truth about Lily, the rejection he never chose, and the mate bow; her presence isn’t just haunting him. It’s hunting him.

I can’t tell when I last slept.

There’s no peace in dreams anymore. Only fragments. Shards. They cut every time I blink.

My wolf paces behind my ribs, restless, ravenous for something he can’t name.

It started as a whisper.

Now it’s a wound.

And every hour it bleeds more.

The ache is constant. Not physical. Worse. It’s spiritual. Bond-deep. Every instinct I have screams that I’ve lost something precious. Something mine.

But I have everything I need.

Don’t I?

Power. Territory. A chosen Luna.

So why does every cell in my body feel like it's waiting for something I forgot?

Why do I keep hearing a heartbeat that isn’t mine?

Today the wind shifts.

I’m mid-shift, half-wolf, teeth still bloody from training. Then it hits.

The scent.

Faint. Distant. But alive.

Not familiar. Not safe. Not rogue either.

It’s lightning on dead leaves. Fire in snow. Moonlight over a grave.

It should repulse me.

But it pulls.

And I follow.

Through the trees. Past the border. Into forbidden hills.

My Beta calls through the link. I ignore him.

Because nothing matters more than this.

I find nothing.

Just silence.

But my wolf won't go back.

He stares at the ridgeline.

Tail stiff. Muscles locked. Nose twitching.

Then he howls.

Not to call.

To mourn.

He knows.

She’s near.

Night falls.

I sit in my office.

Alone.

Selena hasn’t returned.

I don’t ask why.

Her scent fades more every day.

But someone else’s lingers.

It clings to my bed. To my skin. To my soul.

I shower five times.

It doesn’t leave.

It’s not a scent of the body.

It’s of the bond.

The one I rejected.

But… I never remember doing it.

The memory exists.

But only like a scar without the pain.

And that’s what haunts me.

If I broke a bond, why don’t I feel the break?

Why does my wolf keep searching?

And why, when I say her name, Lily, does something inside me fracture?

The dreams change again.

Now I’m the one in chains.

And she’s the one watching me.

Hair white as bone. Eyes of molten silver. A mark on her wrist glowing darker with every step.

I beg. I scream. I shift.

But she never speaks.

Until the final moment.

When her hand touches my chest.

And the mark I always thought was a gift

Shatters.

I wake up choking.

Gasping.

The bond mark is cracked. I can see it in the mirror now.

No illusion.

It’s breaking.

Because it doesn’t belong to Selena.

It never did.

It was hers.

And I buried it.

Just like I buried her.

I tear through the archives.

Old records.

Council scrolls.

None of them tell me what I need.

Until I find the oldest vault.

Hidden beneath the floorboards.

Sealed with Alpha blood.

I break it open.

Inside ritual books, rejected names and forbidden lineages.

And a prophecy.

Forgotten by most. Feared by those who remembered.

“The one marked by flame and shadow shall rise from rejection, clothed in wrath. Her mate shall forget. But the bond shall not. And when she returns, no crown shall hold, no Luna shall survive, and the false Alpha shall kneel in ash.”

My mouth goes dry.

My wolf loses control.

He takes my body for hours.

When I wake again, I’m in the forest.

Naked.

They clawed the ground around me.

Dead animals at my feet.

Blood in my mouth.

And her name on my lips.

Lily.

Selena returns.

She tries to lie.

But her eyes won’t hold me.

And her scent reeks of fear.

I grab her. Hard.

And I demand the truth.

She fights.

But the bond between us shudders. Thin, fading.

She finally speaks.

Words like knives.

“You weren’t supposed to remember.”

I freeze.

“What did you do?”

She just cries.

And it’s all I need.

The memory slams into me.

A ritual. A lie. A binding spell.

One designed to erase.

To blind me to the one who was mine.

To replace her with someone else.

Selena was never my mate.

She was a mask.

And I wore it willingly.

Until now.

I cast her out.

Strip her title.

Rip the mark from her neck.

And as soon as I do, something changes.

The bond flares.

Reignites.

Not with Selena.

With her.

The real one.

The one I damned.

The one I abandoned.

And she feels it.

Because the wind howls louder.

The shadows grow darker.

And the ground trembles with footsteps that haven’t yet arrived.

I collapse to my knees.

Because my wolf is silent.

Not in fear.

In awe.

Because she’s coming.

Not broken.

Not begging.

But reborn.

And she is no longer just my mate.

She is my reckoning.

And she brings war.

That night, I dream again.

But it’s no dream.

I see the pack grounds.

Burning.

The council is dead.

Alphas kneeling.

And in the smoke stands a figure.

Eyes glowing. Fangs bared. Crown of fire in her hair.

And in her hand

My heart.

Still beating.

Still bound.

To her.

Jake has finally broken free from the lie, remembered his true mate, and uncovered the betrayal. But it’s too late. Lily is no longer the girl he rejectedshe is wrath incarnate, and she’s coming for everything he holds dear. The reckoning has begun.
