Chapter16

Chapter16
Return of the Unbroken

Ash still clings to my skin.

The child doesn’t speak again. She breathes, barely. But her presence... it pulses. Like mine. A mirror warped by something darker. I carry her through the forest. The mark on my wrist still burns. Not from pain. From power. It tightens like a shackle and a gift.

The rogues are gone. Slaughtered. Not by Jake.

By something else.

Or someone.

I know what it means.

I’m no longer welcome here.

Not among the ruins.

Not in hiding.

I bury the bodies. One by one. Kade watches, silent. His face is unreadable. But I feel the tension in him. The unease. He saw the message in the blood.

He knows what I’m about to do.

He doesn’t try to stop me.

He only says three words before I leave.

“Don’t lose yourself.”

I don’t answer.

Because I already have.

The girl sleeps against my chest as I walk. Her warmth is faint, flickering. But she doesn’t fear me. Even when I shift mid-step and run through the trees with her pressed to my fur, she sleeps.

I cross the borders of the territory like I never left.

The guards don’t see me.

Or they pretend not to.

I don’t care which.

The packhouse looms ahead.

Not home.

A cage I once bled in.

Now a stage.

I walk through the gates at dawn.

No fanfare. No alarm.

They see me. Eyes widen. Voices stammer.

No one dares move.

My wolf steps just beneath my skin, simmering. Not to attack.

To reclaim.

Every step is deliberate. Every breath sharpened.

I reach the doors. They swing open.

He stands there.

Jake.

His scent hits me like rot laced with memory.

But something’s different.

Not just him.

Me.

He speaks.

I don’t listen.

I look at him and see the boy who broke me, the Alpha who mocked me, the mate who threw me to the wolves and laughed when they tore me apart.

Now he sees the girl he left behind

and realizes she never needed him.

He tries to touch me.

My energy flares.

He recoils.

He hides it. But I saw the fear.

I smile.

Not soft.

Not forgiving.

Just… satisfied.

Others gather. Selena. My father.

My old pack.

They gape like I’m a ghost.

I am.

A ghost made flesh.

I step past Jake. Into the hall.

No one blocks me.

The walls remember me.

The floor remembers my blood.

I climb the stairs.

To his office.

It’s locked.

I break it.

Inside, I place the child on the couch.

She opens her eyes.

“You’re where you’re supposed to be,” she says.

She closes them again.

Sleeps.

I sit.

Wait.

It doesn’t take long.

The council comes.

Beta Marcus. Gamma Leo. Others.

They enter. See me. Freeze.

Jake follows. Angry now. Trying to reassert control.

He talks. Demands. Orders.

I say nothing.

Not with words.

I stand.

My wolf surges.

The light shatters.

They all fall to their knees.

Even Jake.

His wolf can’t rise.

Not in my presence.

I don’t shift.

I don’t need to.

I am the shift.

Power ripples from me like a second skin.

No one speaks.

Until she does.

Selena.

She dares.

“Lily,” she says.

I look at her. See the lies. The betrayal. The cowardice.

She starts to cry.

My wolf doesn’t pity her.

I don’t either.

She reaches for me.

I turn away.

I look at Jake.

He opens his mouth.

The child speaks first.

“She’s not yours.”

They stare at her. She stands now. Barefoot. Glowing.

She points to me.

“She was never yours.”

She points to Jake.

“Not your mate.”

The mark on my wrist burns brighter.

Everyone sees it.

Their eyes widen.

Even the council.

Recognition.

Fear.

Respect.

“She carries the First Flame,” the Gamma whispers.

The First Flame.

I don’t know what it means.

But they do.

Jake steps back.

He tries to speak.

His voice breaks.

The child takes my hand.

“She’s ready now,” she says.

“Who is?” I ask.

Her eyes turn violet.

“Your wolf.”

Pain rips through me. Not like before.

Faster. Deeper.

I drop.

The shift overtakes me.

But it doesn’t stop.

It evolves.

My fur darkens. My body warps. My bones stretch.

My wolf is no longer just a beast.

She’s divine.

Wings of smoke. Eyes like stars.

They all fall.

Even the Alphas of other packs who just arrived. Word must’ve spread fast.

Too fast.

And then she walks in.

Not a girl.

Not a child.

The Whispering Shadow.

But not as I saw her before.

She wears armor now. Silver. Black.

Behind herhundreds.

Others like me.

Eyes glowing. Wolves with sigils. Children marked.

A legion.

My legion.

The Whispering Shadow smiles.

“All rise for the Alpha of the Unbroken.”

The ground shakes.

The sky bleeds.

Jake screams.

He shifts.

Runs.

The child lifts a hand.

He stops mid-step.

Frozen.

Mid-air.

Eyes wild.

“Kill him,” someone whispers.

I look around.

Everyone watches.

But I don’t move.

I speak.

Only one word.

“Wait.”

Then the child turns to me.

And whispers something that chills me more than death.

“He’s not Jake.”

My world spins.

“What?”

She nods.

“The real Jake died weeks ago.”

My heart stops.

She places her palm on my chest.

“Your mate is alive.”

The one you marked.

The one you claimed.

A shadow behind the child steps forward.

Cloaked.

Tall.

Wounded.

Eyes like thunder.

He removes the hood.

And I see him.

Not Jake.

Not a ghost.

Someone I’ve never seen.

And yet… my soul knows.

My mark burns.

He’s mine.

My wolf howls.

The child turns back to the Jake we knew.

And smiles.

“It was never him.”

The Jake who rejected Lily isn’t who he seems he’s an imposter. The real mate, hidden and alive, steps forward… and everything Lily thought she knew is about to unravel.

I don’t breathe.

I don’t blink.

I don’t move.

Because if I do, I’ll fall apart.

The man before me isn’t a memory. He’s not a ghost, a lie,, or a dream stitched together from pain. He’s real. Flesh. Blood. Mine.

And my wolf she knows.

She doesn’t question it. She bows to it.

She roars through my soul in recognition.

A bond ignites. Not broken. Not rejected.

Untouched.

Hidden.

Protected.

His eyes storm grey and drowning lock onto mine. He doesn’t speak. He doesn’t have to.

We feel it.

But everything else falls apart in that same breath.

The imposter Jake begins to shift.

Not into a wolf.

Something worse.

His skin cracks. His mouth unhinges. His eyes melt into shadow. The thing beneath the face isn’t human. It was never a wolf.

It was wearing a skin.

Borrowed. Possessed.

Selena screams.

So does my father.

The Whispering Shadow doesn’t.

She steps forward.

Places a hand on my shoulder.

“This is what killed your past,” she says.

“Now burn it.”

I raise my hand.

The mark flares.

The imposter snarls but it’s not fear in its eyes.

It’s hunger.

It lunges.

Straight at him. My true mate.

Not me.

But him.

Everything stops.

I leap between them.

The creature hits me in mid-air.

Pain. Heat. Fire.

But I don’t fall.

I rise.

Wings burst from my back.

Not feathers.

Shadow.

The creature hisses.

My hand finds its chest.

And I pull.

Light pours out.

Not white.

Not gold.

Black.

It howls. Collapses. Melts into ash.

The room is silent.

My mark fades.

But not completely.

It glows with a new color; storm grey threaded through the flame.

My wolf paces.

Watching the man behind me.

My mate.

But something’s wrong.

He hasn’t moved.

He hasn’t spoken.

He’s bleeding.

Badly.

Too badly.

I turn to him, eyes wide.

But I stop cold.

Because I see it now.

The wound across his chest

it’s glowing.

Like mine.

But it’s not a wound.

It’s a mark.

His own.

A perfect mirror of mine.

Burning.

Alive.

Bonded.

But…

Cracking.

He’s dying.

The bond was buried.

Now it’s waking.

Too fast.

Too strong.

It’s killing him.

“No,” I whisper.

The Whispering Shadow is already moving. She kneels beside him. Her hands pulse with strange light.

But it’s not enough.

His eyes find mine.

No words.

Only that connection.

Soul-deep.

And then the twist.

The child steps forward.

Calm. Cold.

“I told you,” she says.

“He’s not what you think.”

I freeze.

“What?”

She looks up at me.

“He’s not just your mate.”

I can barely breathe.

She smiles. Not kindly.

“He’s my brother.”

The room shatters with the weight of her truth.

But she’s not done.

She steps between us.

Looks at him.

Then at me.

And she whispers

“He’s the Heir of the Abyss.”

Lily’s true mate is not only real, but he’s the brother of the mysterious child and the Heir of the Abyss, a title that may unravel everything she thought she knew about power, bloodlines, and her destiny.
