Chapter 95
Chapter 95
The cold wind howled through the broken window as Damon stood frozen in place, staring at the darkened figure that emerged from the shadows. Every instinct in his body screamed danger, yet his feet refused to move. Behind him, Skylar reached for his arm, her fingers trembling.
“It can’t be,” Damon whispered, eyes narrowing. “You’re supposed to be dead.”
The figure stepped into the faint glow of moonlight seeping through the cracks in the ceiling. It was Lucien.
But not the Lucien they remembered.
His face was gaunt, stretched tight over bone, eyes glowing with an unnatural red hue. Faint, silver veins pulsed under his skin like cracks in marble. And in his presence, the air seemed to grow heavier, as if charged with ancient, forbidden magic.
“Death couldn’t hold me,” Lucien rasped, his voice echoing with a dual tone, like two beings speaking in unison. “You see, Damon, you only killed the body. But the spirit… the curse… it lives on.”
Skylar felt bile rise in her throat. “You were consumed by the void.”
Lucien smiled, revealing teeth far too sharp for a man. “I became the void.”
With a flick of his wrist, the ground beneath them cracked. The building trembled. Dust fell from the rafters. Damon shoved Skylar behind him and shifted, bones snapping, fur tearing through skin. Within seconds, the wolf stood in his place—taller, stronger, more furious than ever.
“You’ll have to go through me,” Damon growled.
Lucien tilted his head. “Gladly.”
He moved with impossible speed. Damon lunged to meet him, claws raking through the air. The clash sent a shockwave through the building, toppling shelves and blowing out what remained of the windows. Sparks flew as their powers collided—Damon’s strength against something… otherworldly.
Skylar pressed herself against the wall, heart hammering. She needed to do something, anything, but her powers—wild and unpredictable—buzzed beneath her skin like fire waiting for a spark.
Damon was losing ground. Lucien moved like a phantom, blinking in and out of visibility, slashing at Damon’s flanks and vanishing before he could counter. Blood sprayed across the concrete floor.
“Damon!” Skylar screamed.
Her voice pulled him back. He twisted, caught Lucien mid-strike, and threw him across the room. Lucien crashed into the far wall, debris crumbling around him. But he stood, unfazed.
“You’ve grown strong,” Lucien hissed, wiping blood from his mouth. “But not strong enough.”
Skylar’s hand shot out. Flames erupted from her fingertips, wild and gold. She wasn’t even sure what spell she’d triggered—it just happened. A jet of fire surged toward Lucien.
He snarled and vanished.
The flames hit the wall, scorching it black. Then—he was behind her.
“Skylar!” Damon roared, charging.
Lucien grabbed Skylar’s wrist. “You’ve always been the key,” he whispered. “The blood in your veins… it’s older than you know.”
With that, he vanished, taking Skylar with him.
“NO!” Damon’s roar shook the walls.
He collapsed to his knees where she had stood only moments ago, the scent of smoke and shadow still hanging in the air. He clawed at the ground, his breaths ragged.
Gone. She was gone.
And this time… it was worse than death.
⸻
Skylar’s world blurred into darkness and cold as the teleportation spell hurled her through space. When her feet hit solid ground again, it was on stone—ancient and etched with symbols that pulsed with a dull red glow. She stumbled, catching herself on what felt like an altar.
Lucien stood above her, cloaked in darkness. They were in some kind of ruined temple, hidden deep in the woods. Candles flickered along the walls, casting eerie shadows that moved like living things.
“I need your blood,” he said calmly, as if discussing the weather.
Skylar’s heart pounded. “You won’t get it.”
Lucien grinned. “Oh, I already have. You see, Skylar… you’ve been marked since birth.”
He traced a sigil in the air with one clawed finger. Her skin burned as a matching mark flared to life on her collarbone—an ancient glyph. Her breath caught in her throat.
“You’re part of the prophecy. You were never just a girl with powers. You are the vessel.”
Skylar backed away, her mind racing. “Vessel for what?”
“The return of the First,” Lucien whispered. “The god of chaos. Bound in the nether long ago. Your lineage ties back to the ancients who once summoned him. And now, through you, he shall rise again.”
Skylar’s knees buckled. Her powers surged and sputtered inside her, struggling to break free.
“I’ll never let you use me,” she spat.
Lucien approached her, eyes glowing brighter. “You don’t have to let me. The ritual has already begun.”
She looked down. The altar beneath her feet was glowing. Blood—her blood—was trickling across the grooves of the stone, feeding the circle of runes. She didn’t remember being cut… but the burning mark on her chest throbbed with each beat of her heart.
Somewhere in the distance, wolves howled. Damon was coming.
But would he make it in time?
Lucien raised his hands. The air thickened, and the candles blew out one by one.
Skylar stood tall, fire building in her palms. Her voice shook with defiance.
“If you want my power… you’re going to have to burn with it.”
And then she unleashed it.
A column of golden fire erupted from her body, crashing against Lucien like a tidal wave. He screamed, staggered back—but did not fall.
The runes on the altar pulsed brighter.
The ground cracked.
And far below, something ancient stirred.
⸻
Meanwhile, Damon tore through the forest in full wolf form, blood and fury fueling every step. The scent of her—smoke, lavender, magic—was faint, but he followed it like a lifeline. He had to reach her. He had to.
The bond between them pulsed in his chest like a beacon. She was alive. But she was scared. He could feel it like his own breath.
He leapt over a fallen tree, skidded down a slope, and stopped as the earth shook beneath him. In the distance, a pillar of fire burst through the canopy.
Skylar.
He ran.
⸻
Back in the temple, Skylar dropped to her knees, gasping. The power inside her had flared too fast. Too hot. She wasn’t ready.
Lucien staggered, smoke rising from his skin, but he was already recovering. He looked more demon than man now—horns forming, his limbs elongating unnaturally.
“You don’t understand,” he hissed. “You can’t stop it.”
The altar beneath her cracked open.
A hand—massive, clawed, and inhuman—reached up from the rift.
Skylar screamed.
And that was the moment Damon burst through the temple doors.
