Chapter 90
Chapter 90
The air crackled with tension as Emilia stood at the edge of the dimly lit hallway, her breathing shallow, her mind racing. The mansion that once felt like a prison now felt more like a battlefield—one where the enemy was cloaked in familiar faces and half-truths. She had just overheard something that rattled her to the core.
“…She can’t find out the truth. If she does, it’s all over,” said the voice—low, cold, and unmistakably Lucien’s.
Emilia pressed herself closer to the wall, the words repeating in her mind like an echo that refused to fade. What truth? What was Lucien hiding?
She wanted to believe there was a reasonable explanation. That somehow, Lucien wasn’t conspiring against her—but the pieces of the puzzle had started to shift, and they no longer fit into the picture she had carefully constructed. Something darker lurked beneath the surface of their fragile truce.
Just then, footsteps echoed from the corridor. Emilia ducked into the shadows, holding her breath.
Lucien walked past, his jaw tight, his phone pressed to his ear. He didn’t notice her. He turned the corner, disappearing into his study and locking the door behind him.
Emilia crept toward the door and pressed her ear against it. Silence.
Then the unmistakable sound of a drawer being opened… and a click. A gun? Her breath caught in her throat.
She stepped back, her heart pounding. She needed answers—now.

Meanwhile, in another wing of the estate, Damon paced furiously. The hacker he hired had just sent him an encrypted message: Files retrieved. Operation Blackveil linked to Greaves Industries. Urgent.
Damon’s fingers trembled as he typed back, Explain. What is Operation Blackveil?
A reply came seconds later.
Confidential project. Human experimentation. Origin traces back to Lucien’s late father—but Lucien authorized recent activity. Clarke name also tied to documentation.
Damon’s mind reeled. Human experimentation? Lucien? And Emilia’s last name—Clarke—tied to it?
He had to tell Emilia. But as he made his way through the hallway, a sudden noise stopped him. The sharp click of a camera shutter.
He turned sharply.
No one.
Or so it seemed.
“Who’s there?” Damon called out, his hand drifting toward the concealed weapon beneath his jacket.
No answer.
But a shadow moved. Fast. Slippery.
Too fast.
He sprinted after it, down the hallway, through a glass door leading to the garden. The figure darted into the hedge maze.
Damon hesitated. Whoever it was knew the estate’s layout. This wasn’t a petty intruder. It was someone with intent.
He plunged into the maze.
Branches clawed at him as he turned corner after corner, following flashes of movement—then, silence.
Dead silence.
He emerged in the center of the maze—and froze.
There, pinned to the marble statue, was a manila envelope.
His name scrawled across it.
He ripped it open.
Inside were photographs—dozens of them. Surveillance shots. Some of him. Some of Emilia. Some… of them together.
But what chilled him most was a single photo—Emilia, unconscious, being carried into a van by masked men. The timestamp was dated weeks before they’d reunited.
His blood turned cold.
This wasn’t just about corporate war anymore. This was personal. Someone had planned this long before they ever set foot in each other’s lives again.

Back inside, Emilia stormed into Lucien’s study without knocking.
He looked up from the documents in front of him, eyes dark with surprise—and something else. Guilt?
“Emilia,” he said calmly, standing. “What are you doing?”
“I heard you,” she snapped. “Just minutes ago. You were talking to someone. About me.”
Lucien’s eyes flicked past her, then back. “That’s not what you think—”
“Oh, spare me the lies!” she exploded. “I’ve been lied to enough in this house. I want the truth, Lucien. What are you hiding from me?”
His lips pressed into a thin line. “It’s not safe to tell you.”
She scoffed. “Then it’s not safe for me to stay.”
She turned toward the door.
“Emilia, wait.”
He reached out—but she pulled away.
“No. No more secrets. No more control. If you don’t trust me with the truth, then I have nothing left to stay for.”
He exhaled, his voice low. “If I tell you… everything changes.”
“Then change it,” she said, her voice cracking. “Because I’m done living in the dark.”
Lucien looked at her for a long moment, then walked to the safe behind the painting. He punched in the code.
The safe hissed open.
He pulled out a black folder marked Project Omega: Confidential.
He handed it to her.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
What she saw made her legs nearly give out.
Photos. Medical reports. Names she recognized—her mother’s. Her father’s. And hers.
“What is this?” she whispered.
“You were never supposed to find this,” he said softly. “But you deserve to know.”
The words blurred as she scanned the documents.
Subject E. Clarke: Genetic Markers—Alpha Viability. Project initiated: March 20, 2001.
“Alpha Viability?” she choked out. “What the hell does that mean?”
Lucien looked haunted. “Your family wasn’t just part of the Clarke empire. They were test subjects—participants in a classified military-genetics program.”
She stumbled backward.
“No… That’s not possible. My parents—my life—it was normal.”
“On the surface,” Lucien said. “But Emilia, you were born for something bigger. Something they never told you about.”
Tears welled in her eyes.
“And you knew?”
“I found out after we got married. And I tried to protect you.”
“By lying to me? By treating me like a pawn in your twisted corporate games?”
“I didn’t want to lose you,” he said quietly.
“You already have,” she whispered, clutching the folder like a lifeline. “I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
Suddenly, Lucien’s phone rang.
He didn’t recognize the number.
He answered, his voice taut. “Lucien Greaves.”
A digitized voice responded: “You’ve gone too far. She knows too much. Now everyone pays.”
The line went dead.
And then—an explosion rocked the far side of the estate.
The lights flickered.
Screams echoed from the hall.
Lucien grabbed Emilia’s hand. “Run.”
Sirens wailed in the distance. Smoke curled beneath the doorway.
But Emilia didn’t move.
Her eyes were fixed on the flames licking through the hallway… and the realization that her past, her identity, and her future had all just been ripped apart.
⸻
Cliffhanger Ending:
As they fled down the stairwell, the ceiling above them cracked—then collapsed. A flaming beam hurtled downward.
Lucien shoved Emilia out of the way—but he didn’t move fast enough.
The last thing Emilia saw was Lucien crushed beneath the rubble—before everything went dark.
