“You should try and eat something, tomorrow will be a long day” Nadine says as she offers me a cup of ramen. I do take it but I can only stare at it. My appetite far gone and what is left is disgust. I drop the cup noodles on the wooden table before turning to Cassius.
“What do you mean Elizabeth planned this?”
Cassius had explained how she had reached out to Gabriel, she was the one to speak sense to Gabriel, she was the one to turn Gabriel against the Robertson’s. But the initial plan did not include Xander getting captured.
Gabriel was supposed to reach Elizabeth first when she got kidnapped, but things had changed when Nadine and Gabriel found out about Damien.
“She knew it would get to this extent one day. But she wasn’t certain who the real enemies were so she could try to expose them, even though it meant giving up her life. Her death will expose the sergent as well as everyone working with him and eventually they will call out their mastermind” Cassius pauses.
“But we can’t put our hopes on the others’ that is why we can only trust the media, if it is exposed world wide then it is inevitable, everyone will pay for what they have done which is why we sent your father there”
“Gabriel?”
Cassius and Nadine nods, this time Nadine is the one to explain.
“We have a camera on him, he would put it on when he gets to where he’s taken and he would push them to confess. He’s the best for that job, that is his way of trying to redeem himself.” Nadine adds.
I feel a sharp slice into my heart, as much as I hate Gabriel I honestly wish he can survive, I have a million questions to ask hum; why did he do all that to mum? Did he ever love her? Did he for once see me as his child?”
Nadine strokes my back softly as if she knows what I’m thinking.
“Don’t stress on it, Gabriel knows what he’s doing” Nadine whispers and I try to nod despite my conflicting emotions.
“so try to eat something” Nadine brings the cup to my face again. I want to reject it again, but Xander’s face in my head pushes me to roll the ramen around the fork and shove it into my mouth as the thought settles on my mind “I have to be strong for Xander”
The next day reaches, and my eyes flutters open struggling to adjust to the bright light piercing in from the window, only now do I realize that I had truly fallen asleep.
It seemed impossible to do that last night, I thought I would hug my knees all night and watch Cassius and Nadine cuddle to sleep. Nadine had claimed there was something between them, I could sense that but maybe because of the heat of the moment, they barely have the thought of spending some time together. They stayed with me in the living area all night, I didn’t even get to see them sleep, I slept before them. Maybe it’s because of the run, maybe it’s because I wanted to escape reality for a moment. But thank goddess I did, I feel more refreshed than yesterday, plus now I’m aware of everything.
“We need to head out now” Cassius nods with his gaze on his phone. The urgency in his voice is what sends me and Nadine springing to our feet, as we watch him head to the door.
“What’s wrong Cassius?” Nadine questions.
“Gabriel’s location is on now, they are not the neighboring pack as expected the Robertson’s pack, I guess Xander is there too.”
At Xander’s name I feel a rush of adrenaline flow through my system while I join Cassius in heading out of the cabin.
“What are these?” I ask at the sight of the devices at the back seat. But instead of answers, I get directions.
“I’ll seat behind and set it up, Cierra sit at the passenger’s seat while Cassius drives”
I oblige, hoping to get answers to my question once we are settled in.
“We are going to start a broadcast soon, with his camera on now, we can see everything that is going on and also the Netherland palace, I just pray they don’t notice it early, or else our effort will be futile” Cassius says under his breath.
Just the thought of everything crashing down sends a two edged sword piercing my chest, it’s something I hate to imagine. I squeeze the hardcover book tight. Everything must end today, including the vault.
“It’s connected” Nadine announces from behind and I abruptly turn to her.
“Can I see it?”
Nadine stares up at me and then back to the screen of the device, hesitating before turning it to me with a look on her face that I cannot decipher not until the screen is on full display.
My heart crumbles at the sight of Xander, chained like a wild beast, sweating profusely while Selene trailed her fingers down his face, she’s standing right in front of him with a prideful smirk and I can feel the twist in the pit of my stomach. That girl has no shame; she just cannot take rejection.
“I’m going to give you another chance Xander, marry me and I will put an end to all these. You cannot beat my mother without me. I don’t care about the vault and the treasures all I want is you. So be with me” Her voice is high pitched at the same time disgustingly seductive.
I have to clench my jaw and tears gathers in my eyes.
I watch as Selene shrugs then turn to the camera.
“You think you are smart huh?”
We all freeze in the car, including Cassius who immediately halts the car and turns to the screen while Selene laughs out loud.
“Take a look at this” Selene says before turning the camera to the body laid on the floor, sleeping? It takes me time to see the blood spilling out from the body and it takes me time to recognize who the body is and when I do, my whole system comes crashing down.
