Chapter 184: Separation
Chapter 184: Separation
Ruelle’s POV
Tossing and turning on the bed, I press my eyes tightly shut to try and summon the angel of sleep. My skin is covered in a light layer of sweat and my insides feel like they are on fire.
It has been two days since I saw my mother and sisters and two nights since I have battled with my sleep. No amount of soup or mild sleeping pills prescribed by the Old Wolf is enough to get my insides to be calm enough for me to fall asleep.
And it is fucking with me in more ways than I am able to explain.
With a strangled groan, I push off the bed and throw my legs over the edge, deep breaths falling from my mouth. The sheets are wet with my sweat, and my mouth feels like a mouthful of sand was shoved in it. That is how much water I happen to be needing in this moment.
Lifting myself off the bed, I waddle out into the hallway and into the kitchen to grab a bottle of water. Once there, I settle down in the small wooden dining area there and gobble it down my throat.
“My lady?” I hear from the hallway and Morra makes her way into the kitchen, her small frame looking even smaller in her nightdress. “Are you having trouble sleeping?”
I give her an honest nod, placing the glass of water on the table. A puzzled look flashes through Morra’s eyes before she blinks it away, heading towards the stove immediately.
“I’ll make you some porridge.”
But I hold up my hand immediately, stopping her. “Oh no no please. Don’t. There isn’t any need for that.”
She stops and stares warily at me, playing with her fingers. “Let me at least warm up another bowl of soup for you, you can’t ever go wrong with—”
“There is no way I am slurping down soup by this time of night.” I state, shaking my head. She sighs and comes to sit next to me. “Are you having difficulty sleeping too?” I ask and she blinks at me.
“Not really. I just tend to stay up longer on some nights.” She laughs awkwardly at the end of her statement and I give her a nod. But then I notice the way she is looking at me.
“Why are you so worried about me, Morra?” I find myself asking.
“Oh but you are my lady.” She responds coolly, not missing a beat. “It is my responsibility to be worried about you. And also… I know you are hurting in this moment because you haven’t heard from the Alpha in the longest time.”
I peel my eyes from my glass to the open window opposite me, my thoughts traveling with the wind whispering from outside of it. “Well you have a good heart, Morra. I hope you know that.”
Her smile is warm and shy as she tucks her chin in. The silence lingers for a few moments before a shaky sigh falls from my lips. “I wonder what he did today… if he’s fine.”
“I heard his brawl today was with Rhyder of Raventhorn, my lady. That would’ve been so intense.”
My eyes grow wide at the sound of that name. Rhyder of Raventhorn? The wolf that Thorne has been waiting all this time to kill. He finally has the chance to avenge his father’s death and that fills me with so much bliss than I should admit.
“What pleases you, my lady?” Morra’s voice pulls me from my thoughts and I shake my head.
“Nothing. I just really hope Thorne gets what he wants out of this brawl. He has been waiting for it all his life.”
She looks quite lost at my words but gives me a smile regardless, and my eyes travel back to the open window. I try to push the thought out of my mind that if Thorne is fighting Rhyder now, then he would be brawling with my father in no time.
“I should go sleep now.” I tell Morra, handing her the glass of water. Pushing off the table, I stand to my feet to go back to my room, but almost fall back down by the sudden wave of dizziness that hits me. The wave is accompanied by the sudden urge to pee, and I find the urge so strong that I am unable to control it until—
My mouth falls open as warm liquid starts to trickle down my legs.
No no no no. This can’t be happening. Not right now…
Those are the thoughts that replay in my head as I stare at my now wet nightdress. Morra pushes up from her seat in a flash, leaping over to help me up. It is the last thing I want to hear in this moment. The very last. But even before she says it, I feel it in my body. The start of the separation.
“Oh Heavens, My Lady! Your water just broke! Your baby is coming!!”
