Chapter 177: Broken
Chapter 177: Broken
Ruelle’s POV
The cause of the churning feeling in the pit of my stomach is what I have been trying to figure out for the past hour. I can’t decide if it is the steak in front of me that my nose somehow translates its aroma from the most mouth watering dish in the world into the most appalling and repugnant odor of something very similar to cat piss.
It is indeed making my mouth water, but not in a good way. I keep swallowing the bile that repeatedly peeks its head over my throat.
“My lady should we get you something else?” The maiden next to me asks, after having stood in the same spot, watching me stare unimpressed at the food in front of me. I feel the need to remind her it isn’t her but me. I turn to her with a sigh,
“No, my dear. But simply take this away I am not feeling well this morning.” I push the tray away, swallowing yet another bile.
“But you haven’t eaten all day.” Morra tells me, taking the seat next to mine.
“I took the soup you made me”. I remind her with a small smile.
“That doesn’t count. It is definitely not enough to get you both through the whole day.” She motions to my stomach, then adds warily, “And your due date is fast approaching. You need more strength.”
I sigh and peel my eyes away from her, looking out the large window that overlooks the green of the lawn.
My due date.
While I should be rejoicing happily that the day when I will finally see my baby is finally coming, and so soon, the mere thought of it brings me great sadness.
The brawl is still ongoing, and had been for over three weeks now. It has also been three weeks since I saw Thorne in the woods and that was the last time I saw him. Ever since he figured out about my undercover informant, all my attempts to find out about the brawls have failed.
Carlos barely comes here anymore and it feels me with so much dread than I can explain not knowing what is going on or how Thorne is doing. And every day I wake up with the same prayer, that I do not go into labor without Thorne by my side.
I feel like the most selfish mother on earth whenever I make that prayer, but at the same time, I am only doing what I know how to. I don’t know if I would make it without him by my side.
“I’m sure he is fine, my lady”. Morra says, reading my thoughts. “And he would be back soon, just like he said. Just please eat something.” She pushes another bowl of God knows what my way.
I rest my head in my palms, my elbow planted on the table. Sometimes I wonder if Morra doesn’t get tired of saying those words to me. Because I sure am tired of hearing them.
It has been three week now and he still hasn’t come. Sometimes I wake up with the sheer urge to disappear from the cabin again, just so he could look for me like the last time. But I am also afraid of what I might find out outside the safe walls of this cabin.
Just then, the sound of heavy footsteps pull me from my thoughts. A guard materializes from behind the wall of the dining room, a sullen look on his face. I lean off the table immediately, staring expectantly at him.
“You have word about the brawl?” I ask, rising out of the chair. I deflate and plop back down to it when he shakes his head. “What is it then?”
“My lady… it is… it is your sister.”
I frown. “My sister..? What about her?”
“Lady Thess… she… I’m sorry my lady but your sister has passed away.”
