Chapter 145: A necklace for Leah
In one charming stall, Rowena noticed a dainty necklace and bracelet set gleaming invitingly in the window. "Leah," she teased solemnly, looking over at Calista, "you absolutely must get yourself this. It would suit you beautifully and brighten your day, I'm certain."
Calista's eyes rolled in a theatrical motion, but the corners of her mouth relaxed into a tender smile. "Perhaps you're correct," she said, a teasing note in her voice. Rowena's infectious excitement goaded Calista into a dizzifying romp of frivolous gossip from stall to stall. I remained beside them, smiling gently, my temper softened by the untroubled joy of the moment.
Calista purchased the set, a lovely, sparkly necklace and a well-crafted bracelet, both of which picked up the colors of the sunrise, and had a moment of mutual delight. It was such a tiny thing, but in its loveliness lay a reminder of the loveliness of the simple things of life and of the love that we all shared within our small community.
With the coming of night and the town people's bubbly gaiety losing vitality with the softer hue of the twilit night, my mind naturally turned back over the comfort of Grayson's arms. The good-natured jibes, the laughter, and the reciprocal smiles had stirred within my own heart a fire, the renewed love that had been my haven through the tempest these last few months.
I headed back to the pack house, the cool touch of night air prancing upon my skin and the distant rustling of goodnight on town air. The journey was one of seriousness, brimming with thoughtful contemplations and the intrigue of belongingness. I owed a debt, gratitude to laughter from friends, to gentle rebuke and kind heart by Rowena, and to unfailing faithfulness by Calista. Every step recalled how, with the vast legacy of the previous magic and the uncertain future, it was those common moments of sharing that made life so lovely.
I went to Grayson's office that evening, a quiet, cozy room which had been a sanctuary for my weary heart. When I opened the door, the sight of Grayson sitting there, his eyes aglow with love and gentle anticipation, warmed me. He opened his arms wide, and I entered them once again, feeling that same warm comfort which I had craved all day.
"Althea," he breathed softly, his voice suffused with a gentleness that stole my breath away, "I've missed you so much."
I pressed my face against his chest, the thump of his racing heart beneath me. "I've missed you too, Grayson," I said in a whisper. "Today was a day of laughter and tiny adventures, these things reminded me of how fortunate I am."
We sat in silence for a moment or two, exchanging tales of the day's events. I told him of the dawn promenade at daybreak and the elegant beauty of dew drops; of the outdoor meal in the hidden garden when the reprimand to Rowena had been translated into snickering jeers; and of our busy outing downtown that concluded with the purchases of a beautiful necklace and bracelet set for Leah. Each utterance made the eyes of Grayson light up with pride and adoration, and hearts wrapped yet closer together.
As our conversation flowed, the atmosphere in his office became thick with gentle passion. Grayson reached out and took my hand, his touch sending warm shivers along my arm. “You make everyday brighter, Althea,” he said, his tone soft and sincere. “Your smile, your laughter, it fills me with hope, even when the future seems uncertain.”
His words melted away the remaining fatigue, and I was attracted to him, our eyes locking in a wordless exchange of love and passion. We danced, our soft embrace transforming into a sweet, slow kiss that bade and talked of shared fantasies. In this close moment, the world outside ceased to be. The soft hum of the pack house, the golden warm light of the sun through the window at dusk, everything else receded, leaving us alone. Each kiss, each soft caress, was like a reaffirmation of our bond, a reminder that in spite of the uncertainties and the burden of fate, our love was a shining beacon that would last.
I was dazed in the sensation, the urgency of Grayson's lips sweet reminder of the best and best of my life. His warm, promise-filled tender eyes took me and I felt profoundly, silently swearing that as long as we held each other closely, no evil could ever be mine. As night fell dark around us, Grayson and I sat quietly in our serene sanctuary, the silence shared between us weighty with soft whispers and brief fits of giggles as we dwelled upon fleeting, exquisite memories of the day. I was lighter-hearted, worried over the old magic and distant predictions cast aside on the pure delight of being enfolded by his arms.
In the seconds before darkness yielded to sleep, I clung to Grayson, promising in the silence that no matter what tomorrow held for us, we would face it together. Each shared look and each uncertain touch was a promise, a promise that our love would be the light to guide us through it all.
Grayson and I left his office, with my hand safe and secure in his, my heart overflowing with gratitude for the laughter, the soft conversation, and the tense but unspoken passion that had filled my day. Walking back to our room, the soft echo of our shared joy lingered with me, a soft, insistent reminder of the beauty of small things.
In that still void, I glanced back over the course of the day, a day of sun-bright promise, in which the little pleasures had interwoven themselves into a tapestry of hope and love.
I knew that it was those moments, the ordinary smiles, the kidding jokes, the close affection, that are worth living for, even with fate. I whispered to myself, softly, "I am grateful for every second of this life… for each smile, every gentle touch, and every promise we make." And as I eventually slept, I clung to those memories close to me, a gentle resolve taking hold within my heart: that tomorrow, we would rise again, side by side, meeting each new dawn with a love as bright and unwavering as the sun itself.
Before I finally drifted off to sleep, I said a few words of thanks to the Moon Goddess for the wonderful people she surrounded me with.
