Chapter 139: Ripples

It spread slowly, a soothing ripple that exploded out like the breaking of dawn. I awoke, and to my surprise, I could sense that my hands were giving off a soft, shimmering light. The warm glow was constant and soothing, a pulse one could sense. I remained there, motionless, as the light began to spread from my hands out over the dying flower. The transformation was almost imperceptible at first, a soft shimmer along the petals.

And then, as if awakened to life by the power in me, the flower trembled. The white, dead leaves unrolled slowly, recovering their whiteness. A boiling green filled the petals, and then exploded into unmixed, pure colours of pink and yellow, as if the flower were being brought back to life before my eyes. The vision was filled with a surge of triumph and awe, a moment of absolute, unadulterated magic that assured me I was going in the right direction. I stared at the flower, awestruck, my heart pounding in recognition of the truth that I had succeeded in this test of mastery. All those conscious breaths, all those considerate exhalations, had all led up to Leah's moment of magic and rebirth. A tide of emotion swept over me, pride, relief, and determination to continue practicing the ancient power now flowing so effortlessly through me.

Leah stepped aside of her, approval burning in her eyes and soft complacency emanating forth. "Bravo, Althea," she breathed softly, voice gentle but firm. "This is a huge leap forward in getting you to a place where you can command your gift. It is just the beginning. Every test, you will learn more about having power to command magic within you. You have shown willpower and bravery, attributes that will serve you well on your journeys.".

I could feel the tears pricking at the corners of my eyes as I said thank you to her, my voice choking. "Thank you, Leah. I. I didn't know I could do this. I'm learning, even when it hurts, and sometimes I'm afraid the power inside me will be more than I can handle. But now I know I can. I want to use it to protect our pack and the people I love."

Leah nodded, her lips curling into a gentle smile. "Always remember, Althea, there is a cost of responsibility with all power. You always have to get back in comparative proportion what you let out. Your magic is not a destroying tool, it is a rebirth power. Do not misuse it."

I slowly rocked my head from side to side, the fullness of her words heavy within my chest. I then moved out of the clearing, still dazed within my head from the lesson for the day and the taste of victory. Once again, I was filled with a burning hunger, a fierce drive to continue training and find out the ancient power that flowed within me.

Later in the night, with the colors of the sun softened by twilight, I headed over to Grayson's office.

The corridors of the pack house were deserted, and candlelight softened by heat guided the way as I hastened through the familiar corridors. I had not been able to find the security of his presence, the warmth of his arms, and the fire that only he could give me following such a colossal day of study. When I'd finally reached his office, Grayson waited there, smiling, and immediately soothing my heart. His own eyes, normally so sharp and observant, twinkled with kindness now and the new joy of meeting us. "Althea, you're back," he gasped, standing up to envelop me in open arms. I stepped towards him, and he clasped me tight as if he had been waiting the entire day for this.

“Tell me everything,” he went on, his voice low and soothing in a soft whisper of intimacy as we sat on his desk.

I explained the day's events: the peaceful walk home from pack house, the detective work with the vials of potions in Leah's room, the genius breathing exercises in the secret clearing, and finally, the flower slump test. I explained to him how I had become angry when my initial attempts were for nothing, how Leah's stubborn will had been planted in me, and how the triumph was in the moment that life came back to the frail flower. Grayson listened to every detail, his hand clenched in mine, his eyes with respect and concern intertwined. "You've altered so much, Althea," he breathed, the brusqueness in his voice mellowed by gentleness. "I'm so proud of you, so proud. Each battle you survive and each fight you endure makes you stronger." His words were balm to the raw wounds of my heart, soothing my fears and fanning the embers of hope.

As the soft murmur continued, my own and his own kindness sang over the quiet of the room. The air was thick with the combination of sweet and bitter. There was nothing but stillness, and the soft hums and clinks of mugs and the soft whoosh of papers off Grayson's desk. His eyes, unflinching in their love, sent my heart a-caving, and I knew our bond, strong and unconquerable, could reach even to the darkest of destinies.

Suddenly, the silence turned into something else, something crawling and swelling, something that neither of us could escape.

Grayson's fingers traced over my cheek, a jolt of pleasure shooting through me, and his lips descended over mine in a kiss both soft and full of sparks. The kiss deepened, our combined heat mashing with the last remaining soft power still pulsing through me. It was a kiss of promise for hope, safety, and a future founded on our total devotion. Grayson's every caress was an epiphany, a light, fierce reminder that our love illuminated my path through all darkness.

I was stunned in the heat of his touch, the way his fingers stroked my skin with subtlety and burning, unspoken passion. I felt it all so intensely, the light pressure of his fingers, the soft nuzzle of his lips against the length of my neck, and the pounding of his heart that was almost as if it beat in perfect rhythm with my own. Time, for all these mouth-watering moments of eternity, did not exist. The world outside us receded into the background until the two of us were all that remained, enfolded around one another in a yielding, but unshakable grasp of love and passion. When night closed around us, we clung to that intimate space, our soft words and gentle hands weaving a fabric of raw feeling and tender exposure.

Every shared glance and every soft sigh was a promise, a silent promise that we would ride out the future together, however unknown. In that quiet, ethereal space, I allowed myself to imagine a future where my regained vigor and our boundless love would mix in a legacy of light which could dispel any shadow. Grudgingly, as the seconds passed and the golden candle flame went out, I let go of Grayson's arms.

I returned to my room, my breast still pounding to the rhythm of our shared desire. I remained motionless for a moment, gazing at the talisman nestled against my chest, the gentle thud reminding me of my new treasure and tomorrow's promise. Despite the burden of ancient prophecy and the shadow hanging over me of a fate that I still hardly understood, the soft, golden warmth of Grayson's arms gave me a soft, unshatterable hope. During the night, under the cover of darkness, with visions of our love still afresh in my mind, I vowed to myself that I would keep going on this path, rehearsing how to wield my powers, searching for solutions in the ancient books, and holding on to the love which had become my guiding light. I closed my eyes, letting the gentle thump of my heart lull me into a reluctant sleep, already envisioning failures and triumphs to come.

“Tomorrow,” I whispered to the darkness, "I will walk deeper in the light, deeper along my path, knowing that no matter how deep the shadow will fall from then on, our bond shall be my light.”

And while I slept, the promise of a new day with hope and memory of Grayson's love shone softly within me, a light powerful enough to dispel even the darkest night.
