Chapter 110 — The church

GINA’S POV.

When I recalled Damien, all I could remember clearly were his black soulless eyes, how they were devoid of emotions, and the way evil swirled in his orbs. Now I understood why everything about him set me on edge. Though I only met him once, it was enough to conclude he wasn't a good person.

And now we knew just how much of an evil person he truly was.

I glanced at Devyn who was noticeably angry, with the way his jaw clenched and the prominent vein propped on his forehead. I couldn't blame him. I would be furious too if the source of our problems had been practically under our noses the whole time.

“I should’ve killed him a long time ago, and spared us the trouble,” Devyn growled out.

I remembered the monsters the witches had killed; the ones that almost killed Devyn, and I felt chills run through me. It was evident where they had gotten such power from. To be able to have the power to alter the genetics of a werewolf, to infuse their teeth and claws with deadly poison… Just how much power did Damien have?

And I’m supposed to kill him.

Dread swept through me. How was I supposed to do that?

I was strong but I’m sure my strength couldn’t compare to Damien’s. I didn't need to fight him to know he was stronger.

Clasping my hands together in my lap, trying to stop them from trembling, I took deep breaths.

‘You’re nervous. Don't be. You’re not going to do this alone. We’re in this together.’

Devyn’s voice in my head was like a caress to my soul.

Smiling at him, I mouthed a ‘thank you.’

I know he was just trying to make me feel relaxed, and less worried, but the truth was, deep down, I was far from relaxed or comforted. There were lots of doubts polluting my mind, dwindling my confidence.

I was literally fighting against a power-obsessed maniac, and the devil himself.

What if I lose? What if I lose everything?

What if I die?

At least I know I tried the best I could.

I released an exasperated sigh as I tried to get a hold of myself.

“You’ll meet Elara tonight, there’s no time for us to waste,” Flora said.

“Why not now?” I asked.

Devyn cast me a glance, answering my question, “Rituals are mainly performed at night.”

That made sense.

The red-haired witch spoke, “Relax as much as you can. After tonight, you’ll head back to your pack. We’ll help you get there quicker,” her expression turned worried, “Prepare yourself for what will come. We’re not sure what it’ll be but you will fight. You can't escape it.

It's not like I had a choice. If I could escape, or cease to exist, I would’ve done that a while ago.

I swallowed a lump in my throat, and managed to speak, “Thank you for your help.”

After they left, we were given clothes and more food to eat, so we could get enough strength, because god knew when next we were going to get the opportunity to eat.

There was a garden behind the castle apparently, and I found myself seated on a bench as I gazed at the sunset. The sight was beautiful, like a painting as the orange glow of the sun illuminated the flowers and plants.

The wind whipped through my hair and the natural scent of the garden filled my lungs. Oh, to be a witch living in Transylvania.

Life must be so good here.

I sensed Devyn’s arrival before I felt his touch. He placed his hand on my shoulder and I took a deep breath when he leaned lower. I stifled a moan when his lips grazed the mark on my neck, the pulse in my neck quickened and a rush of desire surged through me from where his lips touched my skin.

“You’re worried.”

I would have denied it, but he knew me well enough to know how I felt. We shared our emotions so it was hard to hide how we truly felt.

I was more than worried… I was fucking terrified.

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

I yearned to see his face, and like he read my mind, he moved to sit beside me. I turned my head to get a better look at him, and the radiant look on his face as he gazed at me, made my heart swell with a series of emotions. Hours ago, his skin was ashen as he battled death on his own.

A shudder ran through me. I never wanted to see him that way again.

His arm snaked around my waist as he pulled me in closer till our bodies touched, “I’ll kill Damien before you even get the chance to.”

From the way his eyes narrowed and the glint of fury in them, he meant what he said. As crazy as it sounded, and as much I didn’t like gore, I liked how easily he killed people who threatened my life. It gave me a sense of pride and protection to know this man wouldn’t think twice to take a life. Just for me.

Cupping his face, I leaned closer and kissed him. I needed to savor this moment here, as the sun cast its fading glow on us while retreating to its slumber.

His hands tightened on my waist and I felt my body melt against him. As we parted, I could see the love and admiration in his blue eyes, and it made my heart ache.

I wanted this forever, but there was something in me, gnawing at my heart, telling me that my story wasn't going to have a happy ending.

I never wanted to ever leave him, and as strange and selfish as it sounded, if I ever did, I wished for him to come with me.

If our forever couldn't be in this life, then let it be in the afterlife.

“I don't want to ever leave you,” I whispered as I caressed his perfect face.

He leaned in and placed a kiss on my forehead, as he whispered back, “You're not going to.”

When the moment was gone and night had come, we went back into the castle. I was given a gemstone which was a portal that could only be used once; it could come in handy. After the ritual was successful, Flora would teleport us out of Transylvania to our pack.

We didn’t pack anything with us. All I had on me was the necklace Devyn had given me as a gift on our wedding night; somehow, I never took it off.

The memory of that night when I’d punched him made me giggle. It had been satisfying and exhilarating. Devyn on the other hand, only took his wallet with him.

Soon, we were making our way to the church, with Flora guiding us, along with two witches I assumed were warrior witches, because of the swords strapped to their hips. I stayed close to Devyn, holding his hand tight, and never letting go.

The surroundings were familiar, and when the church came into view, my breath hitched; It looked exactly like the one I had seen in my dream. The accuracy of my dreams was mind-blowing.

Standing in front of the huge doors, I inhaled and exhaled deeply. The long-awaited moment was finally here, and it was just about to unfold. Yet, a sense of anxiety crept in.

Devyn squeezed my hand and I felt the tension leave my shoulders as I relaxed a bit.

“You’re ready.” His breath fanned my ear, sending warmth through my whole body.

I glanced at Flora as she gave me a curt nod, “We’ll be here to guard the church till the ritual is over.”

I smiled, “Thank you for everything. You’ve been helpful.”

She shrugged, “It's what we’re supposed to do. We owe you.”

I turned back to the door, thinking of how far I had come.

“I’m ready.”

And the doors opened.
