Chapter 104 — Stronger than them

A tense stillness lingered around us. Devyn confronted the three wolves, his teeth bared at them menacingly, and his stance ready to attack. The three wolves circled around us, their predatory gaze fixed on us as if we were prey. I could feel the confidence they exuded, clearly not threatened by us. In their heads, they were the threats themselves.

They'd be surprised.

I observed them closely, noticing the resemblance to Devyn with their dark fur and large bodies. Their fur was an inky black, almost blending with the darkness around us. Unlike Devyn, their furs didn’t look they felt soft. They looked like touching them would stain your hands or even hurt you.

Their eyes were the most unsettling part, and now that they shifted into their wolf, they looked even more menacing. It felt like they were gazing at my soul, sending chills down my spine. Their claws were longer, their canines sharper, and their faces scarier than your usual wolf. They looked like a werewolf but at the same time, they didn't.

They were horrific.

‘We were sent to get you. You’re coming with us,” the one in the middle spoke in my mind. I don’t know how I could tell he was the one, but somehow I could. His voice was hostile as it echoed through my mind, scrapping me in the most unsettling way.

Everything about them ticked me off. I needed them to leave us, but telling them to leave us was a waste of time.

‘I’ll give you the grace of speaking now because when I’m ripping your bones off, I won’t be patient enough for questioning.’ Devyn responded, his voice agitated and laced with venom as he growled beside me.

A dark chuckle echoed in my mind, ‘You don't know what we're capable of. We’re going to flood the ground with your blood.’

One of them turned its large head to look directly at me, ‘Come with us, girl. And we’ll let your boyfriend live.’

Annoyance seeped through me as I spoke out loud, “He’s not my boyfriend, he's my husband,” it's not like they would care anyway. I tipped my chin upward, defiant. “And you’re in over your head if you think I’ll leave him to follow you monsters.’

A growl echoed in my head, ‘Last warning.’

Deep down, fear was rippling through me but I tried to hide it. Their threats were not just mere threats. Just by looking at them, you could tell just how strong they were. We were also at an advantage here; it was three against two—well—one and a half.

But the determination surging through me overcame my fear, and I felt confident. I was stronger than I thought, and I was going to prove just how strong I was tonight. I wasn’t going to let fear overcome me. I was going to fight, even though Devyn might not want me to.

I stood tall beside Devyn, my hand on his head as I glared at them.

“You must have hearing problems. I said I’m not coming with you,” I hissed.

At that moment, Devyn sent a message in my mind, just for both of us to hear.

‘You’re the littlest here, and you’re this fearless. You never cease to amaze me,” there was an amusement in his voice as he glanced at me, his blue eyes sparkling. Then he turned to back to look at the wolves, his eyes narrowing into slits.

‘Get ready to climb my back. I’m not going to engage in combat until I’m sure you’re safe. For now, we’re going to run.’

I nodded.

The wolves inched closer, and I clutched Devyn’s fur tighter, preparing to run.

‘It’s a pity. There’s no turning back now,’ One of them said, his voice filled with malice.

Devyn didn’t need to send a signal or call out an order. In a split second, I propelled myself off the ground with force and settled on his back.

My brain could barely comprehend what happened at that moment, because in a second, Devyn was racing, and the woods became a blur.

As the wind swept through me, I lowered myself, aligning my chest with his back. Gripping his fur tight, I struggled to look ahead as the wind tried to shut my eyes.

I didn’t need to look behind to know they were tailing on us. They were unbelievably fast, but Devyn was unbelievably faster.

Running through the dense forests, Devyn dodged trees effortlessly, like it was as easy as breathing. I glanced quickly to my left, sighting a wolf keeping pace with us, and as I glanced to my right, there was another.

When I looked behind, another wolf trailed closely, directly at our heels.

The wolf at our right extended its claw, ready to slash at Devyn. Before I could warn Devyn, he took a sharp turn, dodging the attack as his claws sliced through the air.

Jesus. Just how sharp were they?

As Devyn ran, I could feel his muscles rippling underneath me and heard the rhythmic drumming of his heartbeat and his hard breathing.

I turned my head to look at the one behind, who was on the verge of a vicious bite aimed at Devyn’s hind leg.

Like I’d let them touch him.

Twisting my body to face the wolf behind us, I gripped Devyn’s fur tightly so I wouldn't fall off him. Extending my leg, I delivered a strong kick to the wolf’s face with enough strength to disorient him. He slowed down, shaking his head to shake off the effect of my kick.

Suddenly, Devyn took a quick turn to the left, and I almost lost my balance. I secured myself by hooking my thighs against his large body. Turning around, I wrapped my arms around his thick neck.

‘There’s a small cave ahead. They won’t be able to get it,’ Devyn’s voice echoed in my mind.

I glanced forward and spotted the cave in a clearing. Though the opening was small, I would be able to fit into it easily.

‘I see it.’

‘Good. Once I’m close, you’re going to jump off my back and run into it.’

I nodded, not sure if he could see me.

The wolf on our left closed in suddenly, teeth bared and poised to snap at Devyn's head. Before I could utter a warning, Devyn sharply turned his body and stood up like a horse, kicking the wolf with such force that I nearly lost my balance. The impact sent the wolf crashing into a nearby tree, creating a resounding thud that echoed through the forest.

I was surprised the tree didn't collapse.

Devyn got back on track, and when the cave drew nearer, I clutched his fur tight, preparing myself.

‘Now!’

Devyn’s voice blared through my mind and I released his fur as I leaped off his back. As I ran to the cave with all the speed I could muster, Devyn turned to confront the wolves. When I was finally inside the cave and safe, I crouched down, watching the fight that was about to unfold in front of me.

Devyn’s body hunched lower, his snarls echoing through me as he prepared to attack. The wolves surrounded him, encircling him. Now, it was three in one, and as much as I tried to acknowledge Devyn’s strength, I still felt like it wasn’t a fair fight.

‘Don’t you dare come out of the cave,’ Devyn’s voice held a warning that sent chills down my spine. The gravity in his tone evaporated every thought of me coming out of the cave.

I had to trust him. He was strong. He would beat them. Right?

In a sudden move, one of the wolves lunged at Devyn, its teeth wide open as it tried to grab him. Devyn propelled himself forward and collided with him as he aimed to bite the wolf’s neck.

I watched in horror as another jumped right at him from behind, yet Devyn, still focused on the first wolf that attacked, turned around, sending the wolf’s body crashing into the other one that was about to attack him.

Breathing heavily and baring his vicious teeth, Devyn clamped down on one of the wolf’s necks, and its whines filled the air. As I watched him dodge all their attacks, and sink his teeth on them, I became aware of just how strong Devyn was.

A sudden realization struck me.

There were three wolves, but only two were fighting Devyn.

Where was the third one?
