Chapter 53
Chapter 53
Dax
The ballroom had quickly become a battlefield. Smoke curled through the space like serpents, and the sound of clashing steel echoed in my bones. The scent of burning silk, blood, and fractured magic was suffocating. I pushed forward, cutting through the panicked press of nobles and guards, one hand on the hilt of my blade, the other raised to deflect a thrown dagger that whistled past my ear.
Where the fuck was Kael?
"Move!" I barked, shoving past a dazed noble. The tapestry of the Thorne crest burned behind him, half-scorched by stray fire. I didn’t stop. I couldn’t.
This wasn’t random. They were here for him. For her. For them.
I knew that now. It wasn’t just the number of attackers or their coordination. It was the holes in our defences. The absence of the usual perimeter guards. The disabled wards I’d ordered placed around the ballroom.
They had been dismantled.
From the inside.
I spotted one of my lieutenants slumped against the wall, a smear of blood across his throat. He had been on rotation tonight. One of the few I trusted.
Fury rose in my chest like a tide. This was sabotage. Treason.
But worse than that, this was personal.
Because somewhere between the moment Aria walked into the ballroom and now, I had felt it. That invisible tether between her and Kael snapped. Not violently. Not like a bond ripped by force. But like a blade laid gently across a thread of fate. Clean. Final.
I’d felt it in my gut. A sick twist of something ancient and rooted in my blood. As if a legacy had shifted, like the earth beneath me was trying to choose.
I had never been bonded. But I came from a line of Guardians who had been bound not just by oaths, but by soul and service to the Nightshade bloodline. My father died trying to protect Lyriana. My uncle vanished into the wilds carrying Aria as an infant.
And I? I had grown up alongside the boy whose father destroyed it all.
Kael.
My brother. My king. My best friend.
But in this moment, as I stood among ash and screams and the remnants of betrayal, I couldn’t help but wonder, had we been on the wrong side all along?
Then I saw her. She was a vision.
Aria.
A column of silver fire arched around her like a living wall. Vines erupted from the stone, ensnaring masked attackers with ruthless precision. Her crown blazed with moonlight. Her hair was wild, eyes glowing with power I could feel across the room. Like a moth drawn to a flame. My whole being felt lit up from within in her presence.
She wasn’t hiding anymore.
She wasn’t surviving.
She was ruling.
Despite the chaos, the screams, the blood, The threat on her life... she was saving people. A noblewoman bled at her feet, and Aria knelt in the fire to heal her. Her expression didn’t waver. Her hand never trembled. Not even once.
She stood in the centre of a room in chaos, ordered her people to protect the weak instead of herself. Kneelt in the blood of a kingdom not of her own, a kingdom that had wronged hers, wronged so many, and she healed. She protected. She rose above us all.
This was the daughter of Lyriana. This was the Queen the land had crowned.
And she was everything my line had died to protect.
The guardians once were among the most noble people, protectors of families like the Nightshades. Protecting the old ways, the old magic. Protectors of the good and true. When did that change?
Guilt twisted in my chest. Not just for Kael. But for my silence. For my hesitation. For all the times I’d stood in the shadows and told myself it wasn’t my choice to make. That I was following orders. Following my purpose.
But it was. It always had been. Everyone has or had a choice to make. A choice to live with.
I saw Cassian covering her flank, blades flashing, his warriors forming a protective circle around her without ever needing to be told. He wasn't just defending her. He was choosing her. I didn't know what he was after when he made the bold move of approaching and asking Aria to dance first, in front of everyone. But his intentions are loud and clear now. Cassian was making his choice loud and clear. Aria. The Nighshades. A different future.
And in that moment, I made a decision.
I couldn't stay at Kael's side tonight. I couldn't be both shield and sword. But I could end this. I could find the truth.
I activated the mind link and sent a command to the remaining scouts and silent sentinels I had placed around the summit grounds.
"Hunt the source. Find the ones who gave the order. I want names. I want proof. And I want them alive."
My instincts screamed that this attack was timed. It had layers. The chaos was only part of it. A distraction for something deeper. I needed to get to the bottom of this before more destruction could take root.
I turned toward the shadows. Toward the ones who betrayed us. Toward the ones who would rather burn the world than see it change.
My feet moved fast, but my thoughts raced faster. My heart felt like it was going to burst from my chest. An odd sensation. I was used to being in control. The one who knew what everyone was thinking, planning, and doing.
But my mind was racing as fast as my heart was beating. Had the bond not broken earlier because Aria hadn’t accepted the rejection? Because she too was royal? Or because something greater still tethered her to the land?
I didn’t know.
But I knew one thing with certainty:
She was no longer the rejected mate of a crumbling king. She was the future. And someone had to ensure she lived long enough to claim it.
Let Kael hold the line. Let Aria command the storm.
I would be the blade in the dark. And I would not miss.
