Chapter 51

Chapter 51
Aria

The moment my hand touched his, the bond flared.

It wasn’t a flicker. It wasn’t gentle. It was a wildfire. Ready to consume us.

Magic surged through me like a rush of silver lightning, tearing through every shield I had carefully rebuilt. My breath hitched. My heart stuttered. For a heartbeat, I forgot where I was. Forgot the weight of the ballroom, the crowd, the eyes. I felt only him. Like the entire room just melted away.

Kael.

The male who had once looked at me and seen nothing.

The mate who had rejected me on site.

My wolf surged forward at the contact, pressing against my skin, whining in awe and longing. She wanted to accept the bond, to be loved by her mate.

After everything.... still, the bond pulsed. Strong. Whole.

Why hadn’t it broken? Why had it never truly shattered?

I wasn't taught much about bonds, with how I was treated in the pack I was raised, no one thought I needed to be taught much about anything, really.

He stepped closer, his hand steady on mine as the music began again, soft and slow. We moved together, as if our bodies remembered what our minds refused to admit.

He was so close now. Too close.

His voice came low, reverent. “You feel it too.” A soft caress that caused my heart to stutter.

“Yes.”

“I thought... after everything... it would have broken.” He said softly, almost as if to himself.

I looked up at him, my heart twisting. “You rejected a mate for a reason, Kael. Do you really want to be with me... or is it because you now know who I am?”

His breath caught. “I didn’t know anything. Not who you were. Not what the bond meant. I was a fool, Aria. I went to that ceremony hoping not to find a mate and knowing that if I did I would reject the bond and move on. I was scared... and I didn’t see you. Not truly.”

I stared at him. My heart hurt. My wolf ached.

“Then why didn’t you ask me to accept the rejection?” I asked, voice low enough for only him to hear. I didn't know much, but I was pretty sure there was a type of process, a transaction between mates.

His lips parted slightly. “Because I am a royal. The King. And... I thought it would sever on its own. I didn’t want to force it. And maybe... maybe I didn’t want to lose the chance forever.”

Something twisted in my chest.

Was that it? He didnt fully believe what he spoke? Did the bond survive because I had never spoken the acceptance aloud?

Or was there more? Something he would have never guessed at.

A possibility began to take root. A whisper in my blood.

My lineage. My power. My place.

Could it be... that the goddess hadn’t broken it because my status as a royal rivaled... or surpassed his?

Did it matter?

He pulled me closer, hand firm but not demanding on the small of my back. It looked like a lovers’ dance. Passionate whispers in the ear, shared breath, tender glances. But under the surface, it was a battle. It was grief. It was a reckoning.

As we spun across the dance floor, the questions dug into me.

He held me gently, as if afraid to press too hard. His scent surrounded me. It was overwhelming, how right it felt.

But was right enough?

I knew the desire to nuzzle into him and let him hold me forever was due to the bond and nothing more. Sure Kael was attractive. But I didn't know him, he hadn't earned my trust, my loyalty... my love.

I thought of my people. My kingdom. The ruins I had breathed life into. The throne I had not taken by force, but with my heart and soul.

I thought of Cassian. His words. His promise.

Not a claim. A choice.

He wanted to know me. Stand beside me.

Not because a bond demanded it, but because he believed in me. He believed in the future that we could build together.

That was what I wanted.

Not destiny. Not obligation.

Choice.

I'm not naive. I know that Cassian could be lying to me. But the offer to get to know each other said so much.

My throat tightened.

“Kael,” I said quietly, “I think I understand now.”

His hand stiffened. “Understand what?”

“Why it never broke.”

He watched me with a storm of feelings in his gaze.

“Maybe it didn’t because I never accepted it. Maybe because I’m not who you thought I was. Maybe because the goddess didn’t finish what you started.”

His jaw clenched. But he remained silent.

“But maybe it should have broken.”

He froze. Unblinking like a statue.

“I don’t say that to hurt you,” I whispered. “But to free us. I want to lead with my heart. I want to choose. Not be forced. Not be claimed. I want to love because I want to. Not because the bond demands it.”

He opened his mouth. Closed it again. “Aria…” he said my name like a prayer. Like a plea.

It ached. It burned. But I pushed on, for me.

“I spent most of my life with no choices,” I continued. “I was hunted, hidden, alone. Everything was taken from me... my family, my identity, my future. Then I was treated like nothing because I didn't have a name, a status the pack respected. And now... now I finally have something to fight for. My people. My kingdom. Myself.”

The music slowed.

We stopped in the center of the floor.

I stepped back.

His hand clung to mine. Like he was afraid I would slip away.

I looked up into his eyes. “This is for the best.”

He opened his mouth to say something, but I beat him to it. "I accept your rejection."

I braced myself for the pain from his rejection, but nothing happened, and I had the answer to my questions. I knew what I needed to do.

With a breath as light as wind, I looked into his amber eyes and I whispered the words that ended it all: “I reject you.”

Pain lanced through my chest. The bond shattered like glass. My wolf howled deep inside me. I knew she would be angry with me.
Kael staggered back, as if struck.

I moved closer to him, softening my eyes. I wanted to tell him that this didn't need to be the end. That I didn't know what the future held but I was willing to get to know him, hear his ideas for his kingdom.

But I didn't get a chance. It happened so fast.

A scream echoed through the room.

Gasps followed.

The chandelier shook.

The windows exploded inward.

Smoke.

Flames.

An attack.

Chaos erupted.

And all I could think as I reached for my magic...

Was that I had just broken my heart to save my future.

And now that future burned around me.
